To' LZ1 ywhom it may Concern Be it known that l. RALIH H. DIXON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Pumps; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artv to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form'a part of this specification.
This invention has reference, generally, to improvements in pumping devices, such as centrifugal pumps; and, the present invention relates, more particularly, to a novel centrifugal pump construction of the single l0 or multiple-stage type, in which the enclosing housing or casing is primarily in the form of a Single hollow cylindrical casting, thus dispensing with the costly construction of splitting the main cylinder or casing;
horizontally, the arrangement of the impeller-shaft and the impeller being such that these elements can be slipped into an open-ended portion of th-e cylinder and operatively mounted within the cylinder, the open-ended portion of the cylinder being closed bya member, hereinafter termed the suction-head.
The 'present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a centrifugal pump comprising a hollow ,cylindrical casing cast in a single piece, with an impellershaft and impeller thereon, and a suctionhead secured to an open-ended portion of the cylinder, all in a manner hereinafter more particularly set forth.
The invention has for its further object to provide a novel arrangement and construction of impellers, all mounted upon an im eller-shaft, within a cylindrical casing, an cooperating vtherewith in a. manner hereinafter stated, whereby the novel results of the hereinafter described multiystage type of centrifugal pump are obtained. Other objects of the present invention not/ at this time more 'particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the said invention.
With the various objects in view', the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel centrifugal pump hereinafter set forth; and, the 'said invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several devices andv parts, as wel] as in the details of the construction of thel said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a longitudinal vertical sectional represen'tation of a centrifugal pump made according to and embodying the principles of the invention, said view illustrating one embodiment of the various elements of the apparatus; and Figure 2 is an elevation of one of the impellers, looking in the direction of theVA arrow X in said Figure 1,'y and with the impeller-shaft and a spacer thereon represented in cross-section, said section being taken lon line 2-2 in said Figure l. f

Referring now more particularly to VFigure. l of the' drawings, the reference-character- 1 indicates one form of multi-stage centrifugal pump embodying the principles of the present invention, the same comprising a main housing or cylindrical casing 2, i
which is closed at its one end, as at .4, the said closed Yend being formed with aj'bearing-member 3. The opposite end of the said housing creasing-is open, as at 5, said openended portion being closed by means of a suitably'formed suction-head or plate, as 6,
suitably secured upon the said end-portion of the housing or casing 2 by means of screw-studs or tap-bolts 7, or other suitable fastening means.
That portion of the housing or casing 2, indicated by the reference-character 8 may. be provided with flanges 9, indicated in dotted outline in said, Figure 1, said flanges being lprovided with suitably disposed perforations for the reception of bolts by vmeans of whichthesaid housing or shell is secured to a `base 10, substantially in the manner as shown.V At the inner end of the cylindrical chamber 11, contiguous to the closed end 4 of the easing 2, is anv annular raceway, as 12, which is provided with an outlet or discharge-member, as 13, preferably internally screw-threaded, as at'14, for the reception and attachment thereto of a discharge-pipe, as will be clearly evident. Within the previously mentioned bearingmember 3 may be arranged a pair of journal- brasses 15 and 16, or the like,-and a suitable packing 17, the same being suitably provided upon its inner facewith a member l24 which is snugly fitted in the open end 5 of the housings or casing 2. the said member 24 being provided with a tubular hub 25 in which is fitted a bearing-ring 26. The coneshaped tubular portion 27 of said member 24 connects with a correspondingy coneshaped tubular portion 28 with which the suction-head 6 is provided; the said coneshaped tubular port-ion 28' leading from the internally screw-threaded opening or inlet 29 with which the Vsaid suction-head or plate 6 is provided, substantially as shown in said Figure 1 of the drawings.
Suitably keyed, or, otherwise secured, upon that portion of the impeller-shaft which extends longitudinally through the cylindrical chamber 11 are aoseries of impellers 30, 31 and 32, the said impellers being also positioned against movement longi'- tudinally upon said shaft by, the oli-set 33, the spacing sleeves 34, and the .nut 35 screwed upon the screw-threaded end-portion 36 of said shaft. f v

of the present invention,I will now briefly set forth its operation.
As will be evident from an inspection ,of said Figure 1 of the drawings, the impelling fluid enters the pump-casing at its inlet-y opening 29 and passes through the cone shaped openings or ducts=28 and 27 into the intake throat 43 of the first impeller 30. The fiuid passes at the central open portion of the said impeller into the space between the two discs 37 and 38, being directed by the concave surfaces of the deflector-blades 40 directly upon the concave surfaces of the impeller-vanes or blades 39, so as to exert its impelling force upon said' Vanes or blades 39, as will be understood. The fluid is discharged at the peripheral opening of the said impeller 30, 'against'the inner wall of the cylinderV 2, and the impeller being also formed with the lateral circumferential sideopening 55, the fluid first forms a substantially solidly moving fluid-wall, against which the inrushing and impelling fluid makes its ownelbows into the space between the two discs 38 and 43 of the impellers 30 and 31. The fluid is thereupon picked up by the second impeller 31, by passing into the central intake-opening 48 of said impeller 31 and into the space between the two discs 43 and 44, being also directed by the concave surfaces of the defiector-blades 46 directly upon the concave surfaces of the impellervanes or blades 45, so as to exert its impelling force upon said vanes or blades 45, similar as in the first-mentioned impeller 30. The fluid is likewise discharged at the pe-4 ripheral opening'of the said impeller 31, against the inner wall of the cylinder 2, and this impeller being also formed with a lateral circumferential side-opening 56, the AHuid 'here also forms a substantially solidly moving fluid-wall, against which the inrushing and impelling fluid again makes itsown elbows into the space between the two discs 44 and 49 of the impellers 31 and 32. The fluid is thereupon picked up by the third impeller 32, by passing into'the central intakeopening 54 ofsaid impeller 32 and into the space between the two discs 49 and 50, being Aalso directed by the concave surfaces of the deflector-blades 52 directly upon the concave surfaces of the impeller-vanes or blades 51,
as in the heretofore-mentioned impellers'30 and 3i, and the fluid being finally discharged radially from the peripheral opening of said impeller 32 into the annular raee-way-12, passing with accelerated force from the discharge-member or element 13 of the pumpcasing or cylinder 2, as will be clearly -evident.
While in the form of multistage centrifugal pump herein-above described and il`v lustratedin said Figure 1 of the drawings, I'have shown an arrangement of but three impellers, it lwill be clearly understood that described construction of centrifugal pump,-
Whether of the single or multiple type, allows the manufacture of such pumps without -the costly arrangement of splitting the casing horizontally, the assembled impellers and shaft being slipped into `the cylinder 2, through its open end, before securing the suction-head 6 in its position over the open y end of said cylinder.
Furthermore, by the present arrangement of the several impellers upon a single shaft,
one impeller feeds the other, and so on according to the number of impellers employed, thereby overcoming the possibility of the column of fluid to lag in the suctionpipe, and finally stop the operation ofthe pump.
Of course I am aware, that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of thev construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoingspecification and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended thereto.- Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts as described in the said specification, norvdo I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accom` panying drawings.
1. A centrifugal pump comprising a cylindrical casing, an impeller-shaft within said casing,` and a plurality of impellers mounted upon said shaft, each impeller being provided with a centrally disposed inletopening, and lall of the impellers ,except the last one upon said shaft being provided at their peripheries with openings for oombined direct and lateral discharge of the impelled fluid, said last-placed impeller having merely a -direct peripheral discharge opening.

A centrifugal pump comprising a onepiece cylindrical casing, said casing having one end closed and the other end open, a bearing-member connected with and eX- tending from the wall providing said closed end, said casing being provided near said wall with an annular raceway and a dis` charge-outlet, a plate secured over the open end'of said casin said plate being provided withv an Ain et-opening in communication with the interior of said casing, an impeller-shaft -within said casing and rotatably mounted in the bearing-member thereof, and a plurality of impellers mounted upon `said shaft, the impelled fluid beingl fed from oneimpeller into the next succeeding iinpeller and beingj finally 'discharged from the last impeller upon said shaft directly into said raceway.

bearing-member connected with and eXtend-' ing from the wall providing said closed end, said, casing beingv provided near said wall with an annular raceway and adischarge-outlet, a plate secured over the open end of said casing, said plate being provided with an. inlet-opening in communi- Acation with the interior of said CasinA ,an impeller-shaft within said casing an ro tatably mounted in the bearing-member thereof, and a plurality of impellers mount# ed upon said shaft, each impeller being provided with a centrally disposed inletopening, and all the impellers except the last one upon said shaft being providedv at their peripheries with openings for combined direct and lateral discharge of the limpelled fluid, vand said last-placed impeller havin merely a direct peripheral discharge' direct y into said raceway.
4f. A centrifugal pump comprising a onepiece cylindrical casing, said casing having one. end closed and the other end open, a'
pair of discs connected by intermediately isposed impeller and deflector vanes, each pair of discs being of different diameters so as to provide eachfone of said im-pellers at its periphery with a `discharge opening for discharging the impelled fluid laterally from the impeller, the larger disc of each impeller being provided with a centrally disposed inlet, said last-placed impeller comprising a pair of discs of the same size connected by intermediately disposed im- 'peller and deflector vanes, said last-mentioned impeller having a direct peripheral discharge into said raceway, and one of its discs being provided with a centrally disposed inlet opening.

An impeller for a centrifugal pump comprising a pair of discs of different size impeller and deflector vanes between sai discs, said discs providing the impeller at its periphery' with a discharge-opening for combined .direct peripheral and lateralD side discharge of the impelled fluid from the impeller.
6. An-'impeller for a centrifugal pump comprising a pair of discs of different size,
impeller and deflector vanes between saidy discs, said discs 'providing the impell'er at' its periphery with a dischargeopening for combined direct peripheral and lateral' side discharge of the impelled fluid from the impeller, the larger one of said vdiscs being provided withl a centrally disposed inletopening, and the smaller disc having an inwardly extending tubular hub for mounting thel impeller upon a shaft.'
