' CIGAR LIGHTER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JoHN M. JoHNsoN,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and ,State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar Lighters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to cigar lighters and one object is to provide a device of this character embodying a torch and electrical means for igniting said torch.

A further object is to provide a cigar lighter of simple construction and but few movable parts, so that it will not likely get out of order.

Other objects will hereinafter appear, and in order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:

In carrying out the invention, I employ a stand 2 made, preferably, of cast metal and embodying a bell-shaped base 4 and a central, upwardly-extending, tubular fount or reservoir 6 adapted to hold an inflammable liquid such as alcohol, benzene, etc. The upper end of the fount 6 is closed by a screw cap 8, having a central bore in which the upper end of a tube 10 is fixed. Said tube 10 extends downwardly to within a short distance of the bottom of the fount 6 and is provided with a wick 12 for conducting the inflammable liquid upwardly to a torch 14.

The torch 14 consists of a handle 16, a tubular stem 18 depending from said handle 16, and a wick 20 arranged in the lower portion of said stem 18. The handle 16 consists preferably of rubber or other insulating material, while the stem 18 consists preferably of brass and is small enough in diameter to readily enter the tube 10. The wick 12 extends upwardly to the wick 20 as disclosed on Fig. 2 to conduct the inflammable liquid to said wick 20.

The bottom of the base 4 is closed by a spool 22 which is secured to said base 4 by suitable means such as screws 24. The underside of the spool 22 and the bottom of the base 4 are covered with a felt or other cushion 26 to protect the finish on the counter or other support upon which the stand 2 may be placed.

The spool 22 is equipped with a choke coil 28, one terminal of which is connected to an electrode 30 while the opposite terminal is connected to a plug 32 adapted to be screwed into an incandescent lamp socket or other suitable source of electrical energy.

A wire 34 leads from the plug 32 to another electrode 36 disposed adjacent to the elec-' trode 30.

The terminals 30 and 36 are fixed in metallicnipples 38 and 40, respectively, which in turn are fixed in a plug 42 of fibre or other insulating material which is screwed into or otherwise fixed to the base 4. A rubber or other insulated bushing 44 extends through the base 4 to thoroughly insulate the wires 28 and 34 from said base. The wires are also covered with insulating material to prevent possible shock to the user of the device.

In practice the fount 6 is provided with inflammable liquid, which saturates the wicks 12 and 20, and the plug 32 is connected to a lamp socket or other source of electricity. When a light is desired the torch 14 is grasped by its handle 16 and drawn across the electrodes 30 and 36 to produce a spark for igniting the saturated wick 20. After the user is through with the light, the torch 14 is replaced in the tube 10 which operation extinguishes the flame at the wick 20. The device will operate with either an A. C. or D. C. current, and where the voltage is low the choke coil 28 may be dispensed with.

From the foregoing description it will be readily understood that I have produced a cigar lighter embodying the advantages above pointed out, andwhile I have shown and described the preferred construction of the invention, I reserve the. right to make such changes as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the claim.
