which the .following is a specification.
My invention consists of a ventilator for an automobile, more particularly designed.
to cool the feet of the chauffeur or driver thereof, and furthermore, ventilate the relative portion-of the body of the automobile, the same consisting of members forming a unitary article attachable to the Wall of the body at an opening or port therein, as will be hereinafter described.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying` drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as such variations are within the spirit or scope of the claims.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of the ventilator in open condition, and a portion of an automobile to which the same is ap lied.

1 designates a portion of the body of an automobile of well known construction. 2 designates a portion of a foredoor of said body, in the wall of which is the port 3 which is in the side of the foredoor, said port forming a communication for the atmosphere with the interior of the body to cause a ow of air, more particularly over heated foot boards, and when closed to eliminate danger of a leak of rain, etc. over the coil box. v O
4 designates a door for the port 3, the same being adapted to be opened to a greater or less extent to adjust the volume of' air desired to be admitted into the foredoor, as in Figure 2', and when desired to cover said port, as in Figure 4, to prevent the admission of air, rain, etc. into the foredoor, said door consisting of a plate of metal or other suitablemateriahhaving on its upper end the serles o f knuckles 5 integral therewith, y \thus comprising one leaf of ahinge of the door.
6 designates the other leaf of the hinge, the same being secured to the adjacent Wall of the foredoor by bolts and nuts, or other `suitable means, and so firmly held in posi'- tion, in the present case near the upper end of the port 3, said leaf consisting of a plate of metal or other suitable material bent on itself and-having its bend formed with the Series of knuckles 7 integral therewith `and placed alternately with the series of knuckles 5, the two series of knuckles having passed through them the pintle 8 thus completing the hinge of the door, and so the latter may be raised and lowered to uncover and cover the port 3, as the case may be, for the purpose hereinbefore stated.
To the inner face of the door 4 is secured the ear 9 to which is pivotally connected the toothed or ratcheted-operating lever or bar l@ which asses through the port 3 towards the chauffeur or driver, and has on its inner end the handle 11 which is within reach of the same so that the door may be conveniently operated.
Connected with the inner side of the foredoor 2 and depending therefrom into the port or opening 3 in the former is the hanger l2 formed of an arm in whose lower portion is the slot 13 through which passes the operating bar 10, the lower wall 14 of said slot beingadapted to receive either of the teeth of said bar and so retain the door in the position in which it has been placed. The bolt that secures 'the arm in position on the foredoor is adapted to pass also through the leaf 6 and so assists in securing the latter to said foredoor said bolt thus being a. common fastening for the arm 12 to the leaf and for the latter toA the wall of the foredoor.
Connected with the aXis of the bar 10 and having its ends bearing against the latter and the door 4 is the spring 15 which serves to hold said bar in engagement with the hanger 12 and prevent improper disconnection thereof.
rlhe slot ,13 is sufficiently long to permit the bar 10 to be raised therein when the tooth of the .latter clears the lower wall of said slot and so the bar may be pushed in or pulled out by the chauffeur or driver, whereby the door may be operated after which when the handle 11 is let go, the bar dro and 'is forced bythe action of the spring 15 into engagement with the hanger and so is locked wlth the latter.
It willbe seenthat a frame on the Wall around the rt or o ening 3 is eliminated, thus simpligfing an reducing the expense of an article of the kind, and as the device is unitary it is easy of installation since all that is necessary is to secure the leaf 6 to a wall of the port 3, which latter may be readily formed in an automobile, if not alreads7 existing there.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-zl. A ventilator for a vehicle comprising a unitary article composed of a door having thereon a knuckle, a leaf having thereon a knuckle, a pintle in the two sets of knuckles, a de ending hanger'havin therein a slot, and a ever connected pivota ly with said door and adapted to pass freely through said slotin the hangerI and having means mesmo' to be interlocked with the wall of said slot, said leaf and han er being attachable to a wall of the vehic e by common fastening means. l
