CHAIN-BOLT DE ICE.
Application filed March 2, 1922. Serial No. 540,531.
To all whomlt't mayconcem: i
Be it known that LEMIL' GRAH, a of the United States. of America, residing at Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio, have in vented new and useful Chain-Bolt Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holding devices. This invention has utility when incorporated in looks of the chain bolt type for doors and holding of swinging or hinged closures for slight opening only.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view of an embodiment of the invention in connection with a hinged door;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, on an enlarged scale, of the bolt in hung position onthe door j amb;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holding plate;'
Fig. 4 is a section on the line IVIV, of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the holding plate; and
Fig. 6 is a detail view of the bottom plan ofthe bolt.
Swing closure or door 1 is mounted by hinges 2 to swing into position against jamb 3 of a door frame. Mounted on this door frame by means of screws 4 is a mounting plate 5 terminating at its lower portion in a hook 6 upwardly. open to receive head 7 having a tapered reverse portion 8 as a neck extending or connecting this head 7 with chain bolt 9. This chain bolt 9 has flexible connection by means of chain links 10' en- A holder or plate 12 is anchored by screws 13 in position on the door 1, preferably in a position about a horizontal plane from the plate 5 carried by the j amb. This plate 12 is provided with a seat 14 extending away from the plate 5. "This seat 14 terminates in enlargement 15 having an angular register or key portion 16 for engaging a register portion 17 of the head 7 of the chain bolt 9. This means that in any assembly of the chain bolt 9 with theholder plate 12, the chain bolt must be brought into a peculiar angular position before the bolt head may enter for sliding along the seat 14 toward the plate 5.
The under side of this holder plate 12 is shown as provided near the seat portions 14, 15, with a pair of parallel cheeks 18 through which may extendbearing pin 19 for. lever 20-normally thrust by spring. 21 to citizen" hold enlarged head 22 as a closure for the bolt head receiving portion 15 of the seat 14' in the plate 12. To complete this closureof the seat portions 14, 15, the head 22 is pro videdwith a lug or key portion 23. i
For placing the chain bolt 9 in looking position it is merely necessary to lift the bolt with its head 7 off the plate 5 and thrust the head 7 inthe seat portion 15. When this bolt 9 has its head 7 provided with register portion 17 as a key, it is of course necessary to bring this bolt 9 to fit in such angular position before the head 7 may enter the seat portion 15 for sliding along the way 14 in the plate 12. Accordingly, when this bolt portion is held in angular position it will permit of insertion of this head 7 into this seat portion 15 for sliding along the way 14. This thrusting action of the head 7 may of itself overcome the action of the spring 21 and remove closure 22 so that the bolt 9 as removed from the hook 6 may be simply and quietly placed in engaging position as to the door 1. Should attempt be made to re move this bolt 9 from outside the closure, thrusting of the bolt 9 against the removable portion 22 causes the tapered portion 8 to ride under this closure 22 and more firmly hold this closure 22 in position. To effect removal it is necessary that lever 20 be dropped to lower this closure 22 before the bo1t'9 is brought into position along the way 14.
As a safety device this means that in a slight opening of the door it is not accessible for manipulation by anyone from the outside. There is accordingly, by a simple mechanism, produced a most effective safety device.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A holder plate provided with a seat, a bolt having a head for engagement with said seat, connection to the bolt for effect ing bolt travel as to the seat, said seat being provided with a bolthead receiving portion,
a lever provided with a fulcrum intermediate its ends and providing aclosure for said portion, and a spring normally holding the lever in seat closing position.
2. A holder plate provided with a seat, a bolt having a head for engagement with said seat, connection to the bolt for effecting bolt travel as to the seat, said plate provided with means in addition to the connection V effecting travel of the head as to-the seat forl a a aeaoeo precluding bolt head ready removal, and a normal closure for a head receiving portlon disposed in said seat against bolt head action,
there being means beyond the base of. the plate and laterally of said seat, which means is: manually operable to shift the closure to tpermit bolt headremova'lz from'5said seat. 7
, 3. A holder plate provided with a seat, a bolt having a head for engagement with said seat, connection to the bolt fonefiecting bolt travel as tor-the seat, saidplate-tprw vided with means, in addition'to the cons necti'on effecting travel of the head as .to the seat, for precluding .bolt head ready re moval, and a spring thrownlever having a V fulcrum intermediate its length and embodying terminally a trigger normally closing the headQreceiv-ing portionas to said 7 seat-against bolt head action.
4. A holder plate provided with a seat, a
bolt having a head for engagement with said seat, connection to the boltifo'r efiiectin'g bolt travel as to the seat, said plate provided with means, in addition to the connection effecting travel of the head as to the seat, ior precluding bolt head ready removal, and
wedge 'coactionfor maintaining the closure against bolt head removal.
5. A-chain bolt having akey head, a holding plate for the bolt having a bolt head entry .keyhold portion, and a lever pivoted to theiiplate intermediate the ends ofthe lever,
said lever terminally providing normal closure for thefportion. a
In witness whereof l al'lix my signature.
