To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that 1, Her C. CREED, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Virginia, in the county of Cassand State of lllinois,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piston-Groove Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in piston groove tools and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed. An object of my invention is to Provide a tool of the character described which is extremely simple in construction and which affords facilities whereby the grooves of pistons of internal combustion engines may be quickly and conveniently cleaned or enlarged, as by deepening, widening or chamiering an edge of the groove, with the necessity of completely removing the piston from a machine in which provided and putting the piston in a lathe obviated.
A further object of my invention is to provide a tool of the character described which is adapted for adjustment to permit of use in connection with the cleaning or enlarging of the grooves of pistons of various sizes.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a tool of the character described which is manually operable to perform the functions for which provided, and which is thoroughly practical commercially. 7
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly outlined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, in which- Figure 1 is a view showing the tool embodied in the invention in position in a groove of a piston, the piston being shown in section,
Figure 2 is a relatively enlarged view taken at right angles to Figure'l, the tool being shown in section and the piston in side elevation, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the tooldetached.
A tool embodying the invention in the form in which illustrated in the drawings comprises a carrying frame designated generally at 1. The carrying frame 1 is substantially U-shaped and includes a pair-of parallel arm portions 2, 3 having right angular web sections 1,5 respectivel at their similar ends, the web sections 1, I being of less thickness than the arms 2, 3 and being adapted to be 'adjustably and pivotally connected together so that the lowermost side of the web portion 4 will lie in the plane of the lower side of the arm 3 and the upper-' most side or face of the web portion 5 will lie in the plane of the upper side of the'arm 2. The upper and lower faces or sides of each arm of the frame are thus disposed in the planes of the corresponding sides of the other arm. In the present instance, the web section 4 is provided with a longitudinal series of threaded openings 6 therethrough adapted to be threadedly engaged by a shouldered pin 7 which is provided with screw threads adjacent to its extremity and is adapted to be projected through an opening 8 in the web section 5 until the shoulder oi the pin rests upon the face of the Web section 5. It will be apparent that the arms 2 and 3 may be spaced at various distances apart by placing the opening 8 of the web portion 5 selectively in alignment with the threaded openings 6 through the web sec- 4 tion 4:.
The arms 2, 3 are provided at their ends remote from the web sections with parallel inwardly oflset extensions 9 and 10 respectively, which extensions preferably have the remote sides thereof rounded so as to be adapted to be gripped in the hand. The extensions 9 and 10 constitute handle or grip portions which maybe conveniently gripped to effect manipulation of the carrying frame 1 as will presently appear. 7 r
The arms 2, 3 are provided with aligned slots 11, 12 respectively therethrough. The slot 11 is adapted to receive the intermediate portion 13 of a tool holding and guide block 14. The latter consists of the intermediate portion 13, av portion 15 of less thickness than the intermediate portion and extending laterally of the inner side of the arm 2 and a portion 16 of greater thickness than the intermediate portion 13 and being merged into the latter by shoulders ,17 which abut the outer side of the arm 2 along the upper and lower edges of the slot 11.
The inner portion 15 of the block is formed with a V-shaped portion cutaway as indicated at 18 and is of a thickness toenter and slidingly engage a groove 19 in a. piston mediate the side edges of the block whereby a line extending axially of the extension 23 will, if extended, bisect the angle defined at the junctureof the sides of the cut-away portion 18. A bore 24 which is non-circulan in cross sectional contour extends through the block 14: from the apex of the V-shaped cut-away portion into the extension 23, being merged midway of the length of the extension into a counter-bore 25 which is of circular cross sectional contour and extends the remainder of the length of the extension. The bore 2% is adapted to receive the shank of a cutting tool, such as indicated at 26 and the walls of the bore 2 1 are cutaway at one side at the juncture of the latter with the cut-away portion 18 to de fine a space 27 at one side of the cutting tool 26 adjacent to the cutting edge of the latter. The cutting tool 26 may be adjusted laterally and releasably held in laterally adjusted position within the bore 2% by means of a clamping screw 28 extending in threaded engagement with a radial opening in the upper part ofthe extension 23 into the bore 24 and a pair of spaced apart clamping screws 29 extending in threaded engagement with radial openings through the lower partof the extension 23 into the bore 24-. The cutting tool 26 may be adjusted longitudinally of the bore 24 toward the groove 19 by means of an adjusting screw 30 which is in threaded engagement with the co-unterbore 25. Moreover, the cutting tool 26 may be held in longitudinally adjusted position between the bottom or inner wall of the groove 19 and the inner end of the adjusting screw 30 so that a very slight axial or longitudinal movement of the cutting tool may be yieldingly permitted, this being due to the provision of as longitudinal slit 31 extending in the screw 30 from the inner end of the latter. The cutting tool 26 is thus placed under tension, tending to hold it in engagement with the groove 19.
The groove 12 is adapted to receive the relatively thick portion 32 of a guide block 33 so that spaces are provided between the 7 side walls of the groove and the side walls of the block 33 as indicated at 34-34 in Figure 3 of the drawings. The block 33 ineludes in addition to the portion 32 a poorensa? tion 35 of reduced thickness which extends beyond the inner wall of the arm 3 in conbloclr 1 1. The portion 35 has a V-shaped portion 36 and is of a thickness to enter and slidingly engage the groove 19 at points diametrically opposite the points at which the bottom wall of the groove 19 is contacted by the portion 15 of the block 14:. The block 33 is held in association with the arm 3 by a; shouldered pin or screw ,3? extending through aligned openings in the portion of the arm 3 defined by the slot 12 and the portion 32 of the block 33, the pin or screw 37 being in threaded engagement adjacent to its extremity with the walls of the opening, through the lowermost portion of the arm 3 as indicated at 38.
From'the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood.v The sec: tions of the frame 1 which have been described are connected together through the agency of the screw; or pin 7 and in the manner described to adapt the device for use with a piston of a given size. A cutting or scraping tool is then inserted, in the bore 24: and adjusted longitudinally and laterally; and then looked to the block let in adjusted position. The handle portions 9 and 10 are 1 of the groove, the cutting or scrapingportion of the tool being thus maintained in fronting relation to the portion 15 of the a operative engagement with one or more of the walls of the groove. The device as a. whole is then rotated about the axis of the piston, the cutting tool being guided during such rotation by the jaws 15 and 35 of the blocks engaging the piston groove. Since spaces are provided between the sides of the block 33 and the side walls of the slot 12, limited rotary or swiveling movement of the block about the axis of the groove is permitted as the device as a whole is rotated about the axis of the piston, whereby rotary movement of the device about the axis of the piston and in operative engagement with the groove of the piston is facilitated.

I claim 2- 1. A device of the character described comprising a substantially U-shaped frame consisting of a pair of connected together sections and including a pair of substantially parallel arms adapted to straddle a piston, said arms having aligned slots therethrough, a tool holding guide block secured to one of said arms with a portion of the block extending through the slot in the arm into a piston ring groove of the piston, and a-cooperating guide block secured to the other arm of the frame with a portion of the block extending through the slot of the second arm into the said piston ring groove.
2. A device of the character described comprising a substantially U-shapedframe consisting of a pair of adjustably connected together sections and including a pair of substantially parallel arms adapted to strad dle a piston, said arms having aligned slots therethrough, a tool holding guide block secured to one of said arms with a portion of the block extending through the slot in the arm into a piston ring groove of the piston, and a cooperating guide block secured to the other arm of the frame with a portion of the block extending through the slot of the second arm into the said piston ring groove, said first named block having a bore therethrough adapted to receive the shank of a tool so that the work engaging portion of the latter will extend into engagement with the piston groove.

A device of the character described comprising a substantially U-shaped frame consisting of a pair of adjustably connected together sections and including a pair of substantially parallel arms adapted to straddle a piston, said arms having aligned slots therethrough, a tool holding guide block secured to one of said arms with a portion of the block extending through the slot'in the arm into a piston ring groove of the piston, a cooperating guide block secured to the other arm of the frame with a portion of the block extending through the slot of the second arm into the said piston ring groove, said first named block having a bore therethrough adapted to receive the shank of a tool so that the work engaging portion of the latter will extend into engagement with the piston groove, and means carried by thefirst named block for adjustably supporting the tool within the bore of the block.

A device of the character described comprising a substantially U-shaped frame consisting of a pair of adjustably connected the block extending through'the slot in the arm into a piston ring groove of the piston, a cooperating guide block secured to the other arm of the frame with a portion of the block extending through the slot of the second arm into the said piston ring groove, said first named block having a bore there- 'through adapted to receive the shank of a tool so that the work engaging'portion of the latter will extend into engagement with the piston groove, and means carried by the first name'd block for adjustablysupporting the tool within the bore of the block, said tool supporting means including a screw having a split end portion extending into contact with the outer end of the tool.

A device of the character described comprising a frame consisting of arm portions-having right angular web sections at their similar ends and inwardlyofi'set handle portions merged into the arms at the other ends of the latter, means pivotally connecting the web sections of the frame in lapped relation to space the arms apart as desired, and means carried by the arms for adjustably supporting a cutting or scraping tool in engagement with a piston ring groove and for guiding the tool along the groove.
6. A device of the character described comprising a frame consisting of arm portions having right angular web sections at their similar ends and inwardly offset handle portions merged into the arms at the other ends of the latter, means pivotally;
connecting the web sections of the frame in lapped relation to space the arms apart as desired, and means carried by the arms for adjusta-bly supporting a cutting or scraping tool in engagement with a piston ring groove and for guiding the tool along the groove,
said means including a pair of blocks detachably-secured to the arms in confronting relation in respect to eachother, one of said blocks being adapted to hold a cutting or scraping tool and the other of said blocks being pivotally attached'to one of said arms, said blocks having portions adapted to enter the piston ring groove and to engage with the latter at diametrically opposite points. p
