Application f led July 5,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES H. W. SHAW, a citizen of Canada, residing at Calgary, in the- Province of Alberta, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Container-Closure Removers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to new and useful improvements in opening devices, and particularly to devices for removing the caps or closures of various types from receptacles.
One object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is readily adaptable for use to remove the screw cap of a fruit jar, or the vacuum cap of a bottle or jar. I
Another object is to provide a device of this character by means of which the rubber packing ring can be lifted from its contact with the shoulder of the jar, and thecap also lifted a sufficient distance to break the vacuum, and thereby permit the easy rotation of the cap.
Otherobjects and advantages will be ap parent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the de vice.
Figure 2 is an inverted perspective view thereof.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a substantially hexagonal plate forming the body of the remover, from two of the sides of which are extended the legs 11, said legs being disposed at right angles to the plane of the body and having their terminals bent to lie in a plane parallel with the body 10, and inwardly beneath the same, as shown at 12. These terminals are being rounded and formed with I sharpened edges, for engagement beneath the rubber gasket of a fruit jar cap. The body of the plate is transversely slitted, as at 13, adjacent and parallel with another side, the portion between the slit, and the outer edge being offset downwardly, as shown at 14:. The body is also slitted in parallel relation to the side opposite the lastdescribed side, as shown at 15, and the porieae. s ria nb. season tion between thisjslit and the edge of the body is oifset downwardly, as shown at'16,
to aline with the ofi'set 14. Slidably dis posed beneath the plate 10, and resting on the offset portions 14; and 16, is a fiat bar 17, the end which projects from the cut ofi corner being bent at right angles to provide.
the third leg 18, having the terminal formed at 19, in a manner identical to that of the legs 11. The other end of the bar 17 is bent at right angles, but in the opposite direction to that of the leg 18, and is adapted for use in prying up the clamping bail of a jar cover, asshown at 17 In the body 10, adjacent one of the legs 11, is an opening 21, in which is received the ofiset lug 22 of the lever 23. The portion f of the lever 23 which carries the ofiset lug 22 is formed with a curved edge face 24,
which is arranged to engage with the upthe lever, the cap may be readily unscrewed from the jar. If desired, the lever may be removed from the plate 10, when the end 17 is to be used for'prying a clamping bail, as
will be readily understood from the draw- 7 ing.
What is claimed is:
1. A closure remover comprising a body movably connected with the body and en-' gageable with the terminal projection of the movable member for moving the leg into gripping position.
3. A closure remover comprising a body having stationary closure gripping legs, a
movableleg carried by the body for cooperw tive action with the gripping legs to grip a closure, one end of the movable leg being 'angularly turned, and a cam lever movably mounted on the body in position for engagement with the angulerly turned end of the movable leg to move the latter into gripping position. 7
4. A closure remover inoluding a body having angularly extending gripping legs on the peripheral edge of the body, a bar slidable transversely of the body and having
