Beit known that lt,MALooLi1/r D. BIKER, a citizen of theUnited States'of America, and a resident of Dover, county of Morris,
and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lift-ing Jacks, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to liftingjacks. One of the objects or"v the invention is to provide for the eflicient lubrication of the lifting members of a lifting jaclr.
Another object of the invention is to provide means in a lifting jack for maintaining Y the lifting power transmitting means or gearing in effective operative position and to prevent the separation of these elements.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for retaining lubricant in theV casing head of a lifting jack thereby insuring the proper lubricant of the operating mechanism for the jack.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following specification taken in connection with the drawings which form a part of this application and in which- Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation of a lifting jack constructed in accordance with my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a perspective'view of the cone collar which retains the lubricant in the casing head and retains the operating mechanism in operative position.
The lifting jack embodying my improvements may be briefly described as comprising a stationary member, a movable member or casing, lifting mechanism such as a screw and nut carried by the movable and stationary members, and operating means for the lifting members such as gearing. Means is provided for retaining the gearing in proper mesh and for retaining lubricant inthe upper end or head of the movable member or casing. In the particular embodiment illustrated this means consists of a conical ring or collar which rests on a portion of the casing head and is adapted to engage a portion of the gearing.
Referring to the drawings there is shown a jack comprising a base 10, preferably of cast or forged metal and a stationary member or pedestal 11 secured to the base 10 as by welding indicated at 12. The pedestal 11 is preferably formed of commercial tubing and is provided with at sides 1S.

The worm gear 21 is' positioned within the casing head and meshes with a worm 26 mounted on a stub shaft 27 carried by thecasing head. "Any suitable means forrotating the shaft may be used.'V 85 The head 28 is threaded into an opening at the upper end of the casing head 23 and a roller bearing 29 is positioned between the head 28 of the upper surface of the worm gear 21 and takes up the thrust during the operation of the jack. An opening is formed in the casing head for the admission of lubricant and a threaded plug 31 closes the opening.
An oil conduit 32 in the stud 22 and in 95 the screw 20'conducts oil to the contacting Y surfaces of the screw Vand nut.
In the operation ofthe jack constructed as above described it has been found that when the casing 14 is lowered the worm gear 21 tends to move relative to the worm 26 thereby moving these two lparts out of proper mesh. In order to prevent this separation of the worm and worm gear a ring or collar 33, having in the present instance the shape of a truncated cone, is positioned between the lower face of the worm gear 2l and the flange 25 formed on the casing head. This collar insures the lowering of the casing head with the screw 20 and the worm Y gear 9,1 and also serves the additional function of retaining lubricant in the casing head thereby insuring the eective lubrication of the bearing and of the roller bean' ing 29. Y
Although one specic embodiment of the invention has been particularly shown' and;V
described, it will be understood that the invention is capable of modilication and that changes in the construction and in the arrangement of Vthe various cooperating parts may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention Yas expressed in the following claims'.
What I claim is:
l. In a liftingjaclr, a pedestal, a casing movable thereon and including a casing head, a lifting screw, gearing in the head for rotating the screw and means located between the gearing and casing head for retaining the gearing in operative'position to rotate the screw and retain lubricant in lthe casing head.
2. In a lifting jack, a stationary member, a movable member, a nut carried by the stationary member, a screw carried by the movable member, a gear in the movable member connected to the screw and means located betweenl and engagingthe gear and a part of the movable member for retaining lubricant in the movable member in all positions of adjustment of said movable member.
3. In a jack, a pedestal, a casing movable thereon and including a casing head, a nut carried by the pedestal, a screw carried by the casing engaging the nut, a gear in the casing head connected to the screw, means for rotating the gear and means located becarried :by the pedestal, a screw carried byYY the casing engaging the nut, a worm gear in:
the casing head connected to the screw, means including a worm for rotating the gear and meansY located between the casing head and gear for retaining lubricant in thc head and retaining the worm and worm gear in mesh.
6. In a jack, a pedestal, a casing movable thereon and including a casing head, a nut carried by the pedestal, a screw carried by the casing engaging the nut, a gear in the casing head connected to the screw, means for rotating the gear and a collar having a bearing in the casing head and engaging said gear.
7. In a jack, a pedestal, a casing movable thereon and including a casing head, a nut carried by the pedestal, a screw carried by the casing engaging the nut, a gear in tlvJ casing head connected to the screw, meansl for rotating the gear and a collar mounted,
on an annular flange in said casing head and engaging the under surface of said gear.
