.WIBE-LINE CUTTER.
Application filed. October 5, 1920. Serial No. 414,766.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnnn'G. LIADY, a citizen of the United States, residin at Cisco, in the county of Eastland and tate s of Texas, have invented a new and useful lVire-Line Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means forcutting wire lines employed in the boring of artesian and oil wells.
An object of the invention is to provide an impact wire line cutter in which the wire cutting operation is effected during the downward stroke of the device and by reason of its impact against an object to which the wire line is connected.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide a device of the character referred to which may be readily and simply operated and which will function positively and accurately.
A further object of my invention is to provide such a device which will be simple and economical in construction.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the subjoined detailed description wherein I have set forth a preferred form of device embodying my invention.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 illustrates a side elevation of a device embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 illustrates a side elevation of the same taken at right angle to Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 illustrates a horizontal section taken on a line indicated by m w in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 illustrates a fragmentary vertical section taken on a line indicated by mw, in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 illustrates a horizontal section taken on a line indicated by m a: in Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 illustrates a vertical section taken on a line indicated by a:w, in Fig. 3.
Fig. '7 illustrates a vertical section of the same corresponding to Fig. 6 but with the device in line cutting position.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a body provided with a stem 2. The stem 2 may be of any desired form or shape. The body 1 is formed with a central bore or slideway 3. A line receiving passage or slot 4 communicates with the bore 3. The bore or slideway 3 of the body 1 terminates in an inner tapered wall 5.
A cylindrical carrier-or block 6 is shiftably mounted within the bore 3. The car,-
rier '6 is provided witha oentra bore 7 anda line receiving passage or slotS registering with the line receiving passage 4. A plate 9 is afixed to the body 1 by suitable means '10. The plate 9 carries a lugor stop .11 which projects within the slot 12 formed on the periphery of the carrier 6. Preferably a fillet 13 is borne by the plate 9'and'is interposed within the line receiving passage 4. A cutter or knife 14 is pivotally supported at its upper end by a pin 15 within the line receiving passage 8 of the carrier 6. An opposed cutter or knife 16 is pivoted at its upper end within ;a slot 17 formed in the carrier 6. The cutters 14 and 16 are provided with line cutting edges 18 and with riders 19 adapted to engage the taper 5.
In operation, the device is put in use by applying the body 1 to the line at the top of the well so that the line illustrated at a extends through the central bore 3. The carrier 6 with the cutter 16 positioned therein is applied to the line. a below the body 1. The cutter 14 is then positioned within the carrier 6 by inserting the pin 15. The carrier is then inserted within the central bore 3 by either lifting the oarrier6 relative to the body 1 or lowering the latter onto the carrier. The plate 9 is then aiiixed to the body 1 with the lug 11 projecting within the slot 12 of the carrier.
In operation, the carrier 6 will be maintained within the bore 3 in the relative position illustrated in Fig. 6 by the lug 11 engaging the top of the slot 12 of the carrier. In this position the device is lowered within the well. Upon striking the line socket illustrated'as b in Fig. 7 the carrier 6 will be forcibly moved relatively upward within the bore 3, thereby actuating the cutters 14 and 16 through contact with the taper 5. The cam action of the taper 5 will force the cutting edges 18 of the cutters 14 and 16 together severing the line a.
My invention is not limited to the particular embodiment illustrated in the drawings longitudinaliy thereof, opposed cutters pivoted to said carrier and engaging said tapered Wall to sever a line when said carrier forcibly engages the line socket.
2. A wire line cutter comprising a body having a central bore and a stem, the body terminating in a tapered inner wall and formed with a wire receiving passage communicating with the central bore, a plate atfixed to the body and closing the wire receiving passage, a cylindricai carrier slidably mounted in the core, the carrier having a centrai bore and a Wire receiving passage, means carried by the plate and engaging the carrier to maintain the carrier Within the bore, and opposed cutters pivoted tothe carrier and operable by engagement with the tapered inner wall to sever a line upon lengthwise movement or" the carrier upward an within the body.
3. An impact line cutter having a body providing a slideway which terminates in an outwardly tapered wall, a carrier loosely shiftable on the slideway, and a cutter pivoted on the carrier and adapted to sever a line when shifted along said tapered wall.
4. An impact line cutter having a body providing a slideway terminating in an outwardly tapered portion, a carrier loosely mounted on the slideway, a lug limiting the downward sliding movement of said carrier, and a cutter pivoted to the carrier and adapted to sever a line when moved over said tapered slideway.
Signed at Los Angeles, California, this 2eth'day of September, 19-20.
FRED G. LIADY.
