BiRTHUR WARREN, OF MILLWALL, LOHDQN, ENGLAND.
TREASURY-NOTE CABINET OB. TILL.
application filed January 11, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ARTHUR WARREN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 2&9 West Ferry Road, Millwall, in the county of London, England, has invented a certain new and useful Improved Treasury- Note Cabinet or Till, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved treasury or bank note cabinet or till adapted for use separately or in conjunction with a cash till.
In the improved treasury or bank note cabinet or till the notes are inserted through a slot and held so as to be exhibited until the next operation, between a pair of loops or frames adapted at the next operation to pass one through the other for transferring the note to the till or floor of the cabinet and then return to normal position for receiving and exhibiting the next note. I
As an example, the improved cabinet or till may be provided with a slot closed by a shutter operated by a lever or handle which also operates the loops or frames, the said frames being so located and mounted behind a glass front and suitable springs being provided, that the movement of the operating lever for the purpose of opening the slot first moves the smaller loop or frame, together with any previously received note through the larger loop or frame and then release the said smaller loop or frame which returns quickly to its normal position under spring action, in which position the upper ends of the loops or frames are so spaced apart as to receive the next note, the release of the operationg lever then causing the frames to close together and hold the newly inserted note exhibited through the glass front until the next operation.
I may combine with the above apparatus a change giving device of suitable kind, for example, the change for notes of different values may be stored in a series of containers or packets, adapted to be withdrawn one at a time by a drawer released by a catch controlled by the operating handle of the note cabinet mechanism.
The accompanying drawings to which reference will now be made show one form of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view,
Figs. 2, 3 and 4C are vertical sections, show ing the parts in three different positions.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an appara- Serial No. 528,508.
tus similar to, Figs. 1 to t having a change giving mechanism combined therewith.
Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation of Figure 5, through the centre of the cabinet.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 4, a is the cabinet or till provided with a slot 7) through which the notes may be inserted. o is the shutter by which the slot 5 is opened and closed, a is the larger of the pair of frames, and c is the smaller frame, both frames are formed of wire as shown, the larger frame (3 is attached at its upper end to the shutter c, and the wires forming the sides of the said frame pass through holes 7 in the base of the cabinet, or suitable guides may be provided whereby the said wires may move freely to accommodate, themselves to the horizontal movement of the shutter c, the smaller frame e is fixed at its lower end to a cross spindle g mounted so as to rotate in suitable bearings such as 72, and is operated by an arm 2' and link connection from a trip lever 70. Z is the operating lever pivoted at m and guided in a slot at. This lever Z is adapted to operate the trip lever by a weighted pawl 0 carried at its lower end and operating in one direction only, the said lever Z is also connected to and operates the shutter 0 through the medium of rods 79 q and a pivoted lever 1*. An inclined plate 8 is provided having its forward end bent down over the spindle 9 so as to support the lower ends of the inserted notes and prevent the same from passing down into the spindle g.
In operation, assuming the parts to be in the closed position shown in Fig. 2, and it is required to operate the cabinet, the lever Z is pulled forward in its slot to uncover the slot 7), in so doing the pawl 0 on the lower end of the said lever engages the trip lever Z4 and moves the smaller frame 6 to the position shown in Fig. 3, and this loop in passing through the larger loop d will carry with it any previously inserted note which may be held between the frames and deposit the on the floor of the cabinet as indicated in dotted lines at I in Figure 3. As soon as the pawl 0 passes the end of. the trip lever is the latter will be released and the frame c will fly back to initial position under the action of its spring t. Further forward movement of the operating lever Z will an cover the slot 25 and also bring the upper end of the larger frame (5 at such distance from the upper end of the smaller frame 6 as shown in Fig. 4, that a note can be inserted through the slot 6, such note being received between the frames at and c. On the operating lever being released it is returned to normay position by its spring u, and the pawl 0 passes back over the lever is without operating the same the shutter b closes over the slot and the larger frame cl closes against the smaller one 6, and against the glass front w, the parts thus returning to the initial position shown in Fig. 2 and so as to hold the in serted note exhibited through the glass front 10 until the next operation when the same sequence of movements are repeated.
Referring now to Figures 5 and 6, these show a construction wherein a change giving mechanism is combined with apparatus similar to that already described with reference to Figs. 1 to 4:.
In this arrangement a larger cabinet is provided wherein the note till is flanked on each side by vertical hoppers, 1, 1 each. containing a pile of packets or trays 2 of change for the notes, for example, the trays on the left hand may each contain change for one note value, and the trays on the right hand change for another note value.
Only two sets of hoppers and drawers are shown but it is obvious that the number may be increased to correspond with the note to be received in the cabinet.
At the base of each hopper 1, 1 is fitted a delivery drawer 3, provided with a stop 12, and locked and released by a catch 4 formed on the end of a lever 5 pivoted at 9 to the side frame 10. The lever 5 is operated by intermediate levers 6, 7 and 8 from the larger frame d of the note cabinet so that the change giving drawers 3 are released every time the lever Z of the note cabinet is operated. The note receiving and exhibiting mechanism of the cabinet occupies a central position and the notes fall down on to the floor of the cabinet which in this case is much lower down than in Figs. 1 to 4, being approximately level with the change drawers 3.
In use, the operations of the apparatus for the insertion of a note in the cabinet will be as already described with reference to Figs. 1 to 4, except that the notes delivered through the larger frame 0? will fall down to the bottom as indicated at 7 V The operation of the levers Z through the frame 03 and levers and rods 6, 7 and 8 will actuate the pivoted lever 5, raise the catch 4 out of engagement with the stop 12 and change drawers 3, so that should the operator desire to give change for the note in serted, he will pull out the drawer corresponding to the value of the note and thus withdraw one of the change packets from the pile in the hopper.
Access to the cabinet is obtained by opening the door 13 which also exposes the hoppers and other mechanism, so that the said hoppers may be replenished as required.
The catch mechanism is duplicated on each side of the machine so as to control the respective change drawers, and the said mechanism together with the note cabinet and its mechanism is preferably mounted in a pair of frames, 10, 10 so itted as to be inserted and withdrawn from the apparatus as a separate unit.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A treasury or bank note cabinet and till wherein the notes are inserted through a slot, a pair of frames between which the notes are passed and held so as to be exhibited, means for actuating said frames whereby the one is passed through. the other to transfer the note to the till, and means for returning the said frames to initial position for receiving and exhibiting the next note.
2. A treasury or bank note cabinet provided with a glass front and a slot in the top, a shutter for opening and closing said slot, a pair of frames, one larger than the other, located beneath the slot and behind the glass front and having movement first one through the other to transfer the note previously received to the till, one then re turning to initial position and the other remaining spaced apart so that a newly inserted note may be received between the said frames, an externally projecting operating handle connected to and operating the shutter and the larger frame, means whereby said operating lever operates the smaller frame at the required times through a pawl and trip lever, and springs for returning the parts to initial position, substantially as set forth. I
3. A treasury or bank note cabinet provided with a glass front and a slot in the top, a shutter for opening and closing said slot, a pair of frames one larger than the other located beneath said slot and behind the glass front, the larger frame consisting of wires connected to the shutter at their upper end and carried down at the sides and passed through guides which permit the wires to accommodate themselves to the movement of the said shutter, the smaller frame consisting of loop pivotally mounted at its base, and located within the area of the larger frame, a trip lever and intermediate levers connected to the pivot of said smaller frame, an operating handle, rods and levers connecting said operating handle to the shutter whereby the said handle can operate the said shutter and larger frame, a' pawl carried by said operating lever and adapted to operate the trip lever of the smaller frame in one direction only, springs for returning the part-s to initial position, substantially as set forth.
ARTHUR WARREN.
