KNOB FOR FURNITURE AND THE LIKE.
Application filed April 17, 1922. Serial No. 554,342.
1 '0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Annnurus J, BUTTER, a citizen of the United States. and a resident of Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, and State of California, have invented a new and useful. lin n'ovemcmz in Knobs for Furniture and the like, of which the following is a specification.
lily invention relates to knobs, handles and the like for furniture or other equipment having drawers, doors and other parts made to be withdrawn or opened and has for its primary object improved means for attaching the knob to the furniture, so as to present a neat appearance and at the same i ime offering a convenient and practical device under all conditions.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated several practical. forms of the invention which will serve for the purpose of a thorough understanding' of the salient features of the idea, in said drawing, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a knob as attached in accordance with my invention; Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 Figure 1; Figure 3 is a face view of one form of the screw anchor; Figure l is a side view of a slightly modified form of the anchor; Figure 5 is a face view of a form of anchor shown in Figure 4E; and Figure 6 is a face view of still another form of anchor. Referring now to the drawing in detail, represents a drawer, panel, door or the like made a part of a piece of furniture and adapted to be swung open or pulled out by the knobs B which there may be one or several according to the requirements. In any event, the knobs are attached to the perv A. and since my particular improvement is devised especially for glass knobs, the attaching means comprises a relatively long bolt (5) made to be inserted through an opening in the glass knob from the front thereof and having a head (6) to serve as an abutment for the face of the knob so as to hold the knob on the bolt. The bolt is passed through an opening in the member A which as above stated may be either a door, panel, drawer or the like. The inserted end of the bolt is threaded for a certain part of its length as shown at (7) and the inside of the member A is cut out to leave an opening (8) larger than the opening through which the bolt (5) enters the member A. The opening (8) acts virtually as a countersink to receive the shank of the screw anchor (10) which may be made in various forms, for instance as shown in Figure 2, the same comprises a relatively broad fiat head (11) having a screw driver slot (12) whereas in Figures 4 and 5 the screw anchor includes a small hexagonal head (13), also having a screw driver slot. Of course the opening (8) is made of diameter and distance to accommodate the dimensions of the shank of the screw anchor, for instance, the shank (9) is shorter and larger than the shank (9) but the shank may be made in other dimensions consequently the opening (8) will be made to correspond. As shown in Figure 6, the screw anchor includes somewhat the same form as shown in Figure 2 but instead of the screw driver slot (2) relatively small spaced openings (1 are used to receive a key for turning purposes. In all forms of the screw anchor the shank is made with an internal recess having screw threads made to receive the screw threads on the end (7) of the bolt.
As heretofore practiced the knob (B) has been usually applied by means of the bolt (5) by the bolt extending through the member (A) and an ordinary nut was used for the threaded'end (7) which left not only an unsightly obstruction on the inside surface of the door, panel, drawer or the like but the nut invariably became loosened which would in turn loosen the knob (B) causing the same to rattle and even drop off. Vith my improvement, the detail arrangement insures a positive hold on the bolt yet may be taken off when desired; then again, the appearance of the same. with my improvement is not unsightly and the bolt does not protrude into the drawer or on the inside of the door or panel, leaving practically a smooth surface.
I claim:
A knob for use in connection with an article having parallel fiat faces, an opening extending partly through the article from one of said flat faces and a recess opening onto the other of said flat faces and communicating with said opening and being of greater diameter than said opening, comprising a knob body having broad, fiat, inner and outer faces connected by an axial bore, a bolt whose length is less than that of the combined thickness of the knob body and the article with which the knob is engaged, said bolt adapted to extend Ill) through the opening in the article and to provided with a flathead edapted to beer terminate in the recess between the ends against one of the flat faces of the article there0f,endanut coat-ting with the bolt and and to force one of the flat feces of the 10 having a cylindrical extension adapted to knob against the other fiat face of said 5 rotate in said recess and to be held by the article.
wells thereof in a permanent plane with the bolt and against eanting thereon and ALBERTUS J. BUTTER.
