Description

S. S. WALDO 8v. T. W. BENNETT.
Sack-Scales.
N0.14Q,O82, Patented Marnch 31, 1874.
WHNEEEEE.
UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL S. WALDO AND THOMAS `W. BENNETT, OF ELDORA, IOVA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SACKSCALES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,082, dated March 31, 1874; application iiled June 24, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL S. WALDO and THOMAS W. BENNETT, of Eldora, county of Hardin and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag- Holders and VVeighing-Scales, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of our invention relates to an improvement in combined weighing-scale and bag-holder; and it consists in a pair of common weighing-scales, having secured to it a bagholder and a platform, so that wh'en the bag is suspended from the holder with its bottom resting on the scales the material to be weighed can be thrown in through the hopper placed above, and the weight will be shown on the scale, thus preventing the necessity of taking the bag, after the material has been placed therein, to the scales to be weighed.
This device presents a cheap, simple, and eflicient means of weighing, and is intended especially for farmers in marketing any of their produce which is sold by weight.
Figure l represents an end view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the same.
a represents a wooden frame, of any desired shape or size, having braces at or near the top, adapted to hold a funnel, c. To one of these braces is attached the hook h, for the purpose of limiting the downward motion of the frame g. Upon the top of the brackets or supports c, extending outward from the frame, is balanced or pivoted the weighing attachment, which consists of a metal frame, g, having the scale-arm o' extending outward from it. The
metal frame is so constructed as to provide for the passage of the funnel c between its bars, and is provided with bar g', which, catching upon the hook 7L, limits its downward movement. Suspended from this frame by the rods l is the platform n, which should be made adjustable by means of screws or slides, so as to be adapted to bags of varying lengths, and which is prevented from swaying back and forth by chains or cords 2. Secured to the rods Z under the weighing-frame and mouth of the funnel is a bag-holder, 3, of any suitable kind,
to which the bag is secured, its bott-om resting upon the platform, so that the material, of whatever kind, may be thrown into it, the weight of which, pressing upon the platform, is indicated upon the scale. To the weighing-frame, upon a screw-rod, is an adjustingweight, 5, of any suitable kind.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States, is-
The weighing bag-holder herein described, consisting of the frame a., hopper o, bag-holder 3, and weighing-scale, having the short arm of its beam constructed as a frame, surrounding the spout, and its downward motion limited by the hook h, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we hereunto affix our signatures this 18th day of June, 1873.
