PICKLINQ APPARATUS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK D. KUL CZYOKE, a citizen of the United-States, and a resident of Woodlawn, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pickling Apparatus, of which the followin is a specification.
present invention relates generally to the pickling of tinned plate as well as tinned articles of various characters, and more particularly to an apparatus for this purpose, my primary object being the provision of a continuous apparatus by which the pickling of articles may be carried out quickly and effectively in a manner to be presently described in connectionwith the accompanying drawings which show the preferred construction of my invention and which form a part of this specification.

Referring now to these figures my invention proposes an apparatus including a frame having side uprights and .11 rigidly upstanding at the ends of the frame and side uprights 12 similarly u standing centrally-between the end uprigh the end uprights 10 and 11 supporting bearings for end cross shafts 13 and 14 and the central uprights 12 supporting at their upper ends bearings for a central cross shaft 15 and also supporting brackets 16 having bearings for a transverse crank shaft 17.
Above the ground rails 18 to which the lower ends of the uprights 10,11 and 12 are securely fastened, these uprights are connected by longitudinal side rails 19-, the latter supporting tanks 20 and 21 upon 0p posite sides of the central uprights 12 and opening upwardly in the spaces betweenthese central uprights and the end uprights 10 and 11,: the tanks being respectlvely the acid and water tanks for a purpose which will be presentlyYdescri-bed.
Suspended within the tanks 20 and 21' are a pair of slatted platforms 22 and 23 to iwhose. opposite ends are ivotally connect- (id as at 24 the lower en of hangers 25.
The upper ends of these hangers 25 are ts 10 and 11,.
pivotally connected as at 26 to spaced points of the side arms 27 of a walking beam having central bearing upon the central cross shaft 15 wherebv in the swinging movement of the walking beam the. platforms 22 and 23 will be alternately raised and lowered in the tanks 20 and 21.
The side arms 27 of the walking beam are inclined with respect to one another upon opposite sides of the center of the walking beam and are braced by truss rods 28 adjustably connected by central turnbuckles 29 and extending between the outer ends of the arms over struts 30, one of the arms 27 at each side of the walking beam being movably connected by a pitman 31 with one of the cranks 32 of the crank shaft 17 before mentioned. I
On the end shafts 13 and 14 are'mounted enlarged sprockets 33 and 34 around which an endless flexible carrier 35 travels. -The upper run of this carrier also travels centrally thereof over a small sprocket 36 on the central transverse shaft 15 between the side arms 27 of the walking beam, the portions of this upper run of the chain upon opposite sides of the sprocket having sufficient slack to dip into the tanks 20 and 21 in which these portions of the carrier are supported upon the slatted latforms 22 and 23 and are shifted vertica ly with the rise and fall of these platforms in operation.
For the above purposes the carrier 35 is I formed of a series of parallel cross rods 35 as best seen in Figures 3.and 4, extending through elongated open connecting links 37 the latter of which are spaced apart -by thimbles 38 on the rods so that those'portions of the carrier which dip into the tanks may rise and fall without buckling to an undesirable extent.
Each of the several open connecting links 37 has upright article holding pins 39, and
the carrier as a whole .is in this way equipped to effectively support sheet metal articles of various characters and metal plate fed t the carrier-at one end of the apparatus for successive passage through the acid and water tanks 20;and 21 and discharged "from the other end, it being obvious that in the course of the passage of the various articles in the tanks 20 and 21,
these articles will not only be moved lengthwise of the tanks through the liquid therein, but will also be shifted up and down during their passagelthrough the liquid so as to insure action of theliquid upon all portions of the surfaces of the articles.
Any suitable power may be utilized for the movement of the parts, connected for instance to one or both of the end shafts 13 as well as to the crank shaft 17, and it is obvious that with the shafts 13, 14 and 17 driven as described the carrier will move continuously with its load of articles to be pickled, successivelythrough the tanks 20 and 21 and that during this movement those portions of the carrier within the liquid of A the tanks will be raised and lowered by and upon which the, dipping virtue of their movement across'the platforms 22 and 23 having continuous alternate up and down movement by virtue of their suspension from the ends of the walk ing beam;
The apparatus as proposed by my invention is not only simple and inexpensive when its capacity in results are taken into consideration, but is economical in its upkeep, strong and durable in use and efi'ective and efficient for the intended purposes.
I claim:
1. A pickling apparatus including spaced apart upwardly opening fluid tanks, sprock-,
ets between and beyond the tanks inline v therewith, an endless flexible carrier extend apart upwardly opening fluid tanks, sprbck ets between and beyond the tanks in line therewith, an endless flexible carrier extending around theend sprockets and having-- its upper run traveling over the centra sprocket and dipping between the central and end sptrockets into the said tanks, vertically shi able platforms within the tanks income and upon which the dipping ortions of the carrier travel, a walking m from which the said platforms are suspended, and means for oscillating the said walking beam whereby to raise and lower the plat forms and the dippingportion of the carsaid carrier being formed of a series pf open links and cross rods passing through the links whereby to permit their dipping portions to flex vertically without buckling.
3. A pickling apparatus including spaced apart upwardly opening fluid tanks, sprockets between and beyond the tanks in line therewith, an endless flexible carrier extending around the end sprockets and having its upper run traveling over the central sprocket and dipping between the central and end sprockets into the said tanks, vertically shiftable platforms Within the tanks and upon which the dipping ortions of the carrier travel, a walking am from which the said platforms are suspended,
and means for oscillating the said walking beam wherebyto raise and lower-the-platforms and the dip-ping portion of the carrier as the latter pass through the tanks, said carrier bein formed of a plurality of flexibly connecte relativel movable links having upstanding article li olding pins for the purpose described.
'4. A picklin apparatus including spaced apart upward y opening ,tanks, an endless flexible carrier having article holding means and having its upper run movable across the tanks and arranged to dip into'the said tanks, vertically shiftable members in the tanks on which the dipping portions of the carrier travel, and means for continuously shifting said members up and down during travel of the carrier as described.
