Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Abrading Devices, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to abrading devices and is herein shown as embodied in a device of this character particularly designed for use in the manufacture of boots and shoes. It is to be understood, however, that in its broader aspects the invention is not limited in its applicability to devices particularly intended for shoe work.
in United States Letters Patent No. 1,05a,656, granted February 25, 1913, upon an application of R. F. McFeely there is shown and described a machine for use in trimming off the surplus projecting margin of the upper of a lasted shoe at the toe end of the shoe, the machine including a rapidly rotated cylindrical trimming tool. trimming tool shown'in said patent comprises a sheet metal strip provided with a,
large number of abrading projections, andhaving its opposite ends bent to form flanges, this abrading strip being curved about the periphery of a supporting wheel of skeleton construction to position its flanged ends in contiguous relation and be ing held in place at the opposite ends of the wheel by means of detachable rings which are provided with annular flanges to over-- lie the marginal edges of the strip, and secured in position by a series of fastening screws.
The sheet metal abrading strips in tools of this character require frequent replacement becaus of wear, so frequent, in fact, that a reduction in the length of time -nec-' essary to take apart and reassemble the device is of very substantial importance.
An object of this invention, accordingly, is to so arrange the supporting means and the securing means for the abrading strip that the device maybe quickly taken apart and reassembled. To this end the support for the abrading strip is, in the construction The shown, made up of a pair of complementary hub portions, one of them encircling the other and the two adjustably held in position, as by means of a ring nut screwthreaded on to the inner hub portion and provided with a flange overlying the outer hub portion. Each hub portion is illustrated as supporting one of a pair of complementary clamping rings to engage and hold the edges of the strip. As shown, each of these hub portions also carries a ring for supporting the middle portion of the abrading strip, each hub portion being connected with its respective clamping ring and supporting ring by a series of spokes. As illustrated these spokes are given a suitable pitch in order to serve as fan blades to expel the abraded waste material, and the spokes of the two halves of the sup porting means may well be relatively p0- sitioned so that a spoke of one half co-opcrates with a spoke of the other half to form a single fan blade of substantially uniform pitch. 7
Since a working loose of the parts of the device, while in operation, would have most disastrous results, a further object of the invention is to provide means to positively hold the various parts of the device in their assembled position.
The novel features of the invention, including certain details of construction and combinations of parts will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims.

A preferred form of the invention, exemplified in the drawing, comprises a supporting wheel about the periphery of which is supported an abrading strip 6provided with a multitude of abrading projections 8, the opposite ends of the strip being inturned to provide flanges 10 which lie in substantially contiguous relation when the strip is in place. The supporting wheel comprises a pair of hub portions 16 and 18 the former of which is keyed to the drive shaft at 14, and each of which is provided with a clamping ring 20 for engaging and supporting the edges of the abrading strip. Each of the hub'portions is also provided with a ring 22 for supporting the middle portion of the abrading strip, one of the rings 22 and one of the clamping rings 20 being connected to each hub portion through a series-of spokes 24. Each of these spokes is given a suitable pitch so that it may serve as a fan blade to expel the waste abraded material which passes in through the openings in the abrading strip. Preferably the two sets of fan blade members thus formed are aimed as shown in Fig. 1 to form a single series of fan blades for the purpose indicated. Engaging a screw-threaded extension on hub portion 16 is a screw-threaded sleeve or ring nut 26 provided with a flange 28 which as shown is provided with a ratchet 30 and overlies the hub portion 18. ooperating with ratchet 30 is apawl 32 slidingly mounted in a guides; in the edge of one of the spokes orfan blades 24 and yieldingly held in engagement with the ratchet by means of aspring 36. A pin 38 is mounted in the pawl in order that the latter may be conveniently manipulated to disengage it from the ratchet when desired against the pressure of the spring 36. A pin 40 is mounted in the edge of this spoke or fan blade portion and engages in a slot in the pawl to prevent the expulsion thereof from the guideway under the reaction of spring 36 when the ring nut is removed.
The ring nut is conveniently provided with a pair or several pairs o'f notches 4L2 to receive a spa'nnerby means of which it may be engaged when the device is to be taken down or assembled. A compression spring 4E4 surrounds hub portion 16 and engages at one nd a flange or shoulder 46 thereon and at the other end an opposed surface on hub portion 18 in order that, as the ring nut is unscrewed to take down the device,the hub portion 18 and its clamping ring will automatically follow the ring nut.
Then the device is to be taken apart the pawl is retracted by means of pin 38 and above indicated.
i their notches in that clamping ring, in the middle supporting rings and in the other clamping ring, the two rings being thus held against relative rotation. As the ring nut is now screwed up, the pawl passes idly over the ratchet but, of course, holds the same against any retrograde movement. After the device is assembled any undesired displacement of any of the parts is impossible since the pawl prevents relative movement of the ring nut and the clamping ring on which it is mounted while the flanged ends of the abrading strip prevent relative rotation of the two clainping rings. Thus the ring nut is securely locked to the hub portion which it surrounds and no relative movement of the parts can tak place until the pawl is manually withdrawn.
Having'described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a substantially cylindrical 'abrading strip, of a pair oi clamping rings supporting the edge of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion formed thereon, and a screw threaded sleeve interposed between the two hub portions detachably to hold the device in assembled condition.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion formed thereon, a nut threaded on one of the hub portions and having a flange to engage the other hub portion detachably to hold the two in assembled position, and a nut lock positively to prevent relative rotation of said nut and one of the hub portions.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical laterally rigid abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion formed thereon and each hub portion extending toward the other clamping ring, a screw-threaded extension formed on one 01. the hub portions and a nut threaded on said extension and engaging the other hub portion for adjustably holding the two hub portions in fixed relation and for effecting lateral clamping of the strip.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edge of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion formed thereon, an adjustable nut constructed and arranged to hold the two hub portions in assembled position, and releasable means to hold the nut in adjusted position.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the abrading strip,
each clamping ring having a hub portion thereon, one or" the hub portions encircling the other hub portion, and a ring nut interposed between the two hub portions to de tachably hold the device in assembled condition.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion formed thereon, one of the hub portions encircling the other hub portion, a ring nut interposed between the two hub portions, and latch mechanism to hold the ring nut in adjusted position with respect to one of the hub portions.
7. In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion formed thereon, one of the hub portions encircling the other hub portion, a ring nut threaded on one of the hub portions and overlying the other hub portion, a ratchet formed on the ring nut, and a pawl mounted on one of the clamping rings and engaging the ratchet to hold the ring nut and said clamping ring against relative movement.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edge of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub connected thereto by a series of fan blades, said blades being separable at the longitudinal center of the abrading strip, means yieldingly tending to separate the two hub portions, and means for adjustably holding the two hub portions in assembled position.
9. In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings having cylindrical grooves for supporting the margins of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion formed thereon and each hub portion extending toward the other clamping ring, a compression spring engaging opposed surfaces on the two hub portions to edect separation of the portions in the direction of the grooves to free the strip, and means for adjustably holding the two hub portions in assembled position.
10. In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings each formed with a groove to receive an edge of the strip, said grooves being in adj acent i aces oi the rings, each clamping ring having a hub portion formed thereon, one of the hub portions encircling the other hub portion, a compression spring interposed between opposed surfaces of the two hub portions tending to separate one from the other to free the strip, and a nut detachably holding the two hub portions in assembled position.
11. In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion formed thereon, one of the hub portions encircling the other hub portion, a compression spring interposed between opposed surfaces of the two hub portions, and a ring nut interposed between the two hub portions and having a flange overlying the outer hub portion.
12. In a. device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion formed thereon and substantially all of both hubs being located between the two clamping rings, a compression spring interposed between co-operating surfaces of the two hub portions, and a nut threaded on an extension of one hub portion. and engaging the other hub portion for adjustably hold ing the two hub portions in fixed relation. 7
13. In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion formed thereon, a sc-rew-threaded extension on one of thehub portions, and a ring nut. threaded on said extension and having a flange overlying the other hub portion for holding the two clamping rings in adjusted position.
14:. In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion formed thereon, one of the hub portions encircling the other hub portion, a ring nut interposed between the two huo portions, means to prevent relative rotation of the ring nut and one of the clamping rings, and means to prevent relative rotation of the two' clamping rings.
15. In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edges oi? the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion formed thereon, one of the: hub port-ions encircling the other hub portion, a ring nut interposed between the two hub portions and having a flange overlying the outer hub portion, and means engaging said flange to prevent relative rotation of the ring nut and the adjacent clamping ring.
16. In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion formed thereon, one of the hub portions encircling the other hub portion, a ring nut interposed between the two hub portions and having a flange formed with a ratchet overlying the outer hub portion, and a pawl mounted on one of the clamping rings and engaging said ratchet to prevent relative rotation of the ring nut and said clamping ring.
17. In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abradii'ig strip, of a. pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion formed thereon, a screw-threaded extension on one of the hub portions, a ring nut threaded on said extension and having a flange overlying the other hub portion, a compression spring interposed between opposed surfaces of the two hub portions, means to prevent relative rotation of the ring nut and one of the clamping rings, and means to preventrelative rotation of the two clamping rings.
18. In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion formed thereon, one of the hub portions encircling the other hub portion, a compression spring interposed between co-operating surfaces on the two hub portions, a ring nut threaded on the inner hub portion and having a flange formed with a ratchet overlying the outer hub portion, and a pawl mounted on one of the clamping rings and engaging said ratchet to prevent relative rotation of the ring nut and said clamping ring.
19. In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion formed. thereon, one of the hub portions encircling the other hub portion, a ring nut interposed between the two hub portions, a compression spring interposed between opposed surfaces of the two hub portions, means to prevent relative rotation of the ring nut and one of the clamping rings, and means to prevent relative rotation of the two clamping rings.
20. In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip, a hub portion for each clamping ring, a pair of supporting rings for supporting the middle portion of the strip, and means for connecting one of the clamping rings and one of the supporting rings to each hub portion. combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion tor-med thereon, and two supporting rings, one attached to each hub portion, for sup-- porting the middle portion of the strip, and means to hold the two hub portions in assembled position.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion termed thereon. one hub portion encircling the other hub portion, and a pair of supporting rings one attached to each hub portion tor supporting the middle portion of the strip, and means to hold the two hub portions in assembled position.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of apair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion formed thereon, one hub portion encircling the other hub portion, a ring nut interposed between the two hub portions, ratchet mechanism to hold the ring nut in adjusted posit-ion with respect to one of the clamping rings, and a pair of supporting rings, one attached to each hub portion, for supporting the middle of the strip.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip each clamping ring having a hub port-ion formed thereon, one hub portion encircling the other hub portion, a ring nut interposed between the two hub portions, a compression spring interposed between opposed surfaces of the two hub portions, means to prevent relative rotation of the ring nut and one of the clamping rings, a pair of supporting rings, one attached to each hub portion, to support the middle of the strip, and means to prevent relative rotation of the clamping rings.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip, each clamping ring having a hub portion formed thereon, a screw-threaded extension on one of the hub portions, a ring nut threaded on said extension and having a flange overlying the other hub portion, a compression spring interposed between opposed surfaces of the two hub portions, means to prevent relative rotation of the ring nut and one of the clamping rings, a pair of supporting rings, one attached to each hub portion, for supporting the middle portion of the strip, and means to prevent relative rotation of the two clamping rings.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a shaft, a pair of clamping rings relatively movable axially of the shaft and supporting the edges of the strip, a separate hub portion for each clamping ring, and a series of fan blades connecting each hub portion With the periphery of its clamping ring.

In a device of the classdescribed, the combination With a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, 01" a pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip, a hub portion for each clamping ring, a pair or supporting rings for supporting the middle portion of the strip, and means for connecting one of the clamping rings and one of the supporting rings to each hub portion, said means comprising a series of fan blade members formed and arranged to expel the waste product produced by the abrading action of said device.
28. In a device of the class described, the combination With a substantially cylindrical abrading strip, of a pair of clamping rings supporting the edges of the strip, a hub portion for each clamping; ring, a pair of supporting rings for supporting the middle portion of the strip, and means for connecting one of the clamping rings and one of the supporting rings to each hub portion, said means comprising a series of pairs of spokes, each pair of spokes forming a tan blade to expel the waste product produced by the abrading action of said device.
