To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK J. NovAK and FRANK J. CISEK, citizens of the United States, residing at Scappoose, in the county of Columbia and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Doors; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a door construction for box cars such as are used for hauling grain, fertilizer or the like in bulk and it aims to provide an improved construction utilizing a novel auxiliary door and operating means therefor.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requiements,various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without de arting from the nature of the invention.

The numeral 1 designates the side of a box car which is provided with the usual door opening 2. ln accordance with the present invention a sliding door 3 is provided for closing the door opening 2 and is mounted to move upon a track 4 arranged near the top of the' car and secured thereto in any convenient and substantial way. Vertical stri s 5 and 6 are secured to the inner side of the car and limit the movement of the door 3. The strip 5 is arranged at one side of the door opening 2 and the strip 6 is located a distance from the door opening approximating the width of the door 3 to limit the movement thereof when the door is open. Hinged hasps 7 arel secured to opposite side portions of the door 3 and are adapted to cooperate with staples 8 carried by the stop strips 5 and 6. Pins 9 cooperate with the staples 8 to secure the door 3 in either open or closed position whence the hasps 7 are engaged with the staples of the respective stop strips 6 and 5. rlhe door 3 is preferably located upon the inner side of the car so as to be pressed outward by the load and maintain a close lit with the portions of the side adjacent and bordering upon the door opening 2. Packing strips 10 may be interposed between the edge portions of the door 3 and corresponding portions of thev side 1 bordering upon the door opening 2 so as to4 insure a close joint and prevent possible waste of material.
The door hangers are alike, each comprising a member 11 provided with vertically spaced wheels 12 and 13. The wheel 12 is larger than the wheel 13 and is adapted to travel upon the track 4. The small wheel 13 engages the lower side of the track 4 and in conjunction with the wheel 12 prevents vertical displacement of the hanger. Links le pivotally connect the members 11 with plates 15 secured to the upper portion of the door 3 adjacent opposite vvertical edge portions thereof.
A strip 16 is secured to the lower portion of the door 3 and insures the formation of a close joint to prevent any waste of material. A grooved guard rail 17 let into the floor of the car, engages the lower portion of the strip'16 and properly positions the door and prevents inward displacement thereof.
A rack bar 18 is removably attached to the door 3 and projects therefrom beyond the stop strip 6 and cooperates with a gear wheel 19 mounted on the inner side of the car whereby to operate the door 3 in the opening and' closing thereof. A crank 20 is adapted to detachably engage the gear wheel 19 and serves as convenient means for operating the same when it is required to move the door 3. The bolts or fastening-s 18a are countersunk so as to be out of the way. The rack` bar 18 operates through an offset portion 6a of the strip 6 which serves as a guide orV keeper therefor.
The main door, 3 is provided in its lower portion with an opening 21 which is adapted to be closed by means of a door 22 mounted to slide vertically and retained in place and directed in its movement by means of a guide 23 which extends along opposite sides of the opening 21 and upwardly therefrom a distance to engage the door 22 when in open position. rlhe door 22 is preferably of metal and its edges are beveled and engage corresponding beveled edges of the door 3 to insure the formation of a'close joint. A rod 24 is attached at its lower end to the door22 and its upper portion is offset and threaded as-indicated at 25 and engages a hand nut 26 mounted upon a bracket 27 and held against vertical displacement by means of a retainer 28 which is secured to the bracket 27 and yengages an annular groove formed in the part`26. A keeper 29 attached to the door 3 receives the rod 24 and materially asists in directing the same in its vertical movement.
When it is required to load the car with grain or other commodity, the door 3 is closed and made secure by engaging the hasps 7 with the staples applied to the stop strip 5, the pins 9 being engaged with the staples after the hinged portions of the hasps 7 have been fitted thereto. llihe small door 22 is likewise closed. The car is loaded in the usual way. When it is required to unload the car the small door 22 is opened by manipulating the hand nut 26 thereby permitting the grain or other commodity to discharge through the opening 21. After the car has been suficiently unloaded to admit of the door 3 being opened the same is released and the gear wheel 19 operated so as toeiiect an opening of the door through the instrumentality of the rack bar 18. Access may now be readily had to the interior of the car to completely unload it. The door 3 may be held in open position by engaging the hasps 7 with the staples applied to the stop strip 6, the pins 9 being engaged with the staples to retain the hinged portions of the hasps in engagement therewith.
Having thus described our invention what we claim is:
A car door havin a door opening therethrough, a vertical shdable auxiliary door for said opening, said iirstdoor above the door opening being cut away to permit sliding movement of the auxiliary door and accommodate it in open positioma guide about the opening overlapping the first door, an upstanding operating rod for the auxiliary door inwardly odset at its lower end and there attached to the auxiliary door, a keeper on the first door above the cutaway portion, a bracket on the first door above said keeper, said rod being outwardly offset intermediate the keeper and bracket and having a screw threaded portion extending upwardly through the bracket, a nut threaded to said portion and resting on the bracket, and a retainer for said nut on said bracket.
