To all whom t may concern.:
Be itl known that I, GAETANO ALBANESE, a citizen 4of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Towel terilizers, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it apperta-ins to make and use the same.
This invention relates to towel sterilizers,
and particularly to apparatus of this class designed for use by ba-rbers and others in the sterilization of towels and the like, and particularly to an improved door construction for apparatus of this class; and the object of the invention is to provide a door construction which is so mounted and operated as to quickly and freely permit of the opening thereof, or the movement ythereof into an open position as well as to provide means whereby the movement of the door into a closed position will operate to form a tight closure for the door opening to prevent the passage of steam outwardly through the door opening when the apparatus isin operation, andthe door is in itsclosed position; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a door construction for sterilizers ofthe class and for the purpose specified, which is simple in con struction, and which is constructed and operated as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specilication, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts `o-f my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 `is a front view of the top portion of a towel sterilizer, showing my improved door construction.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the construction `shown in Fig. 1 and showing the door in an open position.
F ig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the door in a closed position; and,
Fig. 4 is a partial section on ythe line 1 -4 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing I have shown a part of a towel sterilizing'apparatus andin the drawing, 5 represents the head orsteam chamber of the apparatus, 6 acontracted neck which places the steamV chamber 5in communicai tion with the steam generator therebeneath, a part of 4which indicatedat 7 in Fig. 1 of the drawing. i In the construction shown the steam chamber 5 is in the form of a cylindrical casing and is provided inthe front'upper face thereof with a door open-V lng or aperture 8 to permit the placement of towels or the like into the steam chamber 5- and upon a perforated or o-penworlr shelf member 9, as well as the removal oftowels therefrom in the usual manner.
u 'The above described construction forms no specific part of my invention and is shown and described for the purpose of illustrating one use thereof,-and in practise,`I provide a door memberlO 'which is arc-shaped in form in longitudinal and cross section, and the side and end edges of which are prefer` ably reinforced by bead members or the like 1l, and the opposite sides of the door member 10 are provided with outwardly directed pins 12, and said door member is also provided with a handle 13 detachably con nected with the door by screws or the like 14, and by means of which the door may bel manipulated.
Mounted within the steam chamber 6 and on the opposite side walls thereof with reference to the door opening 8 are two arcshaped tra-ck members 15 of the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing and the members 15are each provided with two elongated arc- shapedfapertures 16 and 17 which extend into offset 'portions 18 and 19at one end, and which open outwardly at their other ends as shown at 20 and 21 by bendingthe material of the members 15 baclrwardly as'shown at 22 in Fig. 4 of the drawing'.
In the' use of my improved door construction, it will be understood that whenfthe door is in a closed position, it is held by its own weight firmly .against the inner face of the steam chamber 5 or the casing forming said steam chamber `about or around the aperture 8 as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, and in this posit-ion of the door, the pins` 12 are 'in theextensions 18 and 19 of the aperturesl'and 17. In opening the door 10 the handle 13 is grasped by the hand of the operatonvand the dooris moved upwardly, in which 4operationthe door first Inovesinwardlyin the extensions 18 and 19 and then upwardly inthe apertures 16 and 17. The inward movement of the door immediately frees the outer face of the door from the inner face of the casing forming the steam chamber 5 to prevent any friction between these` parts or to prevent the scratch ing or marring of the outer face of the door, which is usually nickel-plated, silver plated, or treated in like manner. By moving the door inwardly in the manner above set out, I also providea free movement for saiddoor without any friction whatever, and it will be understood that the door will normally support itself in its open positio-n, and a slight touch or downward movement of the door will cause the door to drop by gravity into its closed position, and to seal the opening or aperture 8 of the steam chamber.A
By providing` the apertures 2O and 21 which communicate with the aperture 16 and 17, the door 10 may be removed. from the casing by removing the handle member l'for the purpose of cleaning, repairing, or repolishing said door member or the parts cooperating therewith.
It will be understood that my invention is notl necessarily limited to the use of my improved door construction in connection with the apparatus herein shown and described, nor am I necessarily limited to the specific form and construction of the door herein shown and described, and various other changes in and modifications of my improved door construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A sterilizer of the class described, comprising a casing provided with a door opening, a door mounted in said casing and adapted to control said door opening, and means withinsaid casing for mounting said door to impart thereto a circumferential and radial movement.
2. A sterilizer of the class described, comprising a casing provided with a door opening, a door mounted in said casing and adapted to control saidV door opening, and means within said casing for mounting said door to impart thereto a circumferential and radial movement to provide a tight closure for the door opening and to permit of the free movement of said door into an open position.
3. A sterilizerof the class described, comprising a casing provided with a door opening, a door mounted in said casing and adapted to control said door opening, means within said casing for mounting said door to impart thereto a circumferential and radial movement to provide a tight closure for the door opening and to permit of the free movement of said door into an open position, and a handle member on said door and extendingthrough said door opening.

A sterilizer of the class described, comprising a casing provided with a door opening, a door mounted in said casing and adapted to control said door opening, and means within said casing for supporting and guiding said door in its movementy to permit of the movement thereof transversely of the door opening and inwardly and upwardly thereof, whereby in the" closedv position of the door, the same 1s held in firm Contact with the casing about said door opening.
6. A sterilizer of the class described, comprising a casing providedy with a door opening, a door mounted in said casing and adapted to control said door opening, and means within saidcasing for supporting and guiding said door in, its movement to permit of the movement thereof transversely of the door opening and inwardly and upwardly thereof, whereby in the closed position of the door, the same is held in firm contact with the casing about said door opening, and whereby inthe movement of theV door into open or closed positions, the same is free from and out of contact with said casing.
7. A sterilizer of the class described, com prising a cylindrical casing 'provided with a door open-ing, a door adapted to control said door opening, arc-shaped track members on the opposite sides of the casing with reference to the door opening therein, said track members being provided with elongated apertures provided at one end thereof with angular extensions, and said door member being provided at its opposite sides with two projecting members adapted toV operate in the apertures of said track members to permit of a circumferential and radial movement of said door member in said casinv.
8. A sterilizer of the class described com prising a cylindrical casingprovided with a door opening, a door adapted to control said door opening, arc-shaped track members on the opposite sides of the casing with reference to the door opening therein, said track members being provided with elongated apertures provided at one end thereo with angular extensions, said door member being provided at its opposite sides with two projecting members adapted to operate in the apertures of said track members to permit of a circumferential and radial move-A ment of said door member in said casing, and means whereby said door member may be removed from the casing.

A sterilizer of the class described, comprising a cylindrical casing provided with ieesoi a door opening, a doorV adapted to control said door opening, arc-shaped trackmembers on the opposite sides of the casing with reference to the door opening therein, said track members being provided with elongated apertures provided at one end thereof with angular extensions, said door member being provided at its opposite sides with two projecting members adapted to operate in the apertures of said track members to permit of a circumferential and radial movement of said door member in said casing, means whereby said door member may be removed from the casing, and said door member being provided witha knob. l

A sterilizer of the class described, provided with a cylindrical casing forming the steam chamber thereof, said casing being provided with an aperture opening outwardly therethrough, a door for controlling said aperture, the inner faces of the casing being provided on opposite sides thereof with reference to the aperture therein, with arc-shaped track members having elongated arc-shaped a ertures, having at one end thereof angular extensions, and said door member being provided on the opposite sides thereof with projecting members which are adapted to extend into and operate in the apertures of said track members to permit of the movement of said door member transversely of the aperture of said casing and inwardly and outwardly thereof.
11. A door construction of the class described adapted to be mounted in connection with a suitable support to control a door opening in said support, means involving tracks or runways mounted on one face of the support for supporting and guiding said door to permit of a combined movement thereof transversely of and toward and from the door opening, and whereby in the operation of closing the door the tracks or runways vvill permit of the automatic movement of the door into firm engagement with the support around the door opening.
12. A door construction of the class described adapted to be mounted within a cylindrical support provided with a door opening, means within the support for supporting and guiding the door to permit of a combined movement thereof transversely of and toward and from the door opening and whereby in the operation of closing the door the same will be automatically moved into firm engagement with the support around the door opening.
