T. O. BAKKEN CHICKEN WATEREH AND FEEDER Filed April 26, 1925 Patented Apr. 1, 1924.
UNITED STATES TOLLEF O. BAKKEN. OF BODE. IOWA.
CHICKEN WATFRER AND FEEDER.
Application filed April 26. 1923.
T 0 ll whom it may concern:
Be it known that T. Tonrr O. Bnnmiu. a citizen of the United State ot America. residing at Bode. in the countv ot Humbrdd and State oi Towa. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chicken Voterers and Feeders. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in chicken waterers and feeders. and the primary object thereof is to provide a device of this character which enables the feed or water container while filled and connected to the trough. to be inverted or placed in operative position. with out spilling or loss of the contents.
The primary obj ct of the invention is to provide a device of this character. which is of simple and economical construction and which can be easily and quickly operated. and which at the same time is positive and certain in its operation.
The invention still further aims to provide a device of this type which embodies a minimum of parts and one wherein the parts are compactly assembled or related and which are not subject to easy derangement.
The invention has other and further objects. which will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawings Figure 1. is a top plan view of the invention, the container being omitted:
Figure. 2. is a section on line 2-2 of Figure l. and
Figure 3, is a detail perspective view of the actuating! device for sealing the container discharge month.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention. a base is employed which may be stamped or pressed out of sheet metal and which involves an outer rim 1, bent inwardly and over to form an inner wall 2 and provided with a bottom 3. the latter disposed above the lower end of the outer rim or wall 1.
A ring or collar 4 is suitably secured at its lower end to the bottom 3. and forms a trough, of circular form. in conjunction with the bottom 3 and Wall 2. The ring or collar 1 is formed with peripheral discharge openings 5 for the container contents. The upper end of the collar or ring 4 is turned over and threaded at 6 in order to threadedly receive the threaded neck 7 of a con- Scrial No. 634.700.
tainer 8. the latter .commonly styled or termed a Mason fruit jar.
For the purpose of sealing: the discharge mouth of the jar or container in order to prevent spilling of the contents. during inversion of the parts. a metal disk 9 is employed which Slidnbly tits within the ring or collar 4 and against the edge of the mouth of the container. The under face of the disk 9 is engaged by an eccentric or cam 10, of the operating member. the latter being preferably formed of a section of wire and the eccentric heiny: constituted of a curved port of the wire. one end it of the wire is extended through an opening provided therefor in the collar 4 and forms a journal. while the opposite end of the wire is likewise extended through :1 diametrically opposed opening in the collar 4 and is formed with an approximately right angular operating arm 12 having a handle 13. the latter located cx'teriorly of the collar.
In order to limit the downward movement of the sealing disk 9. a stop 14 is st ruck out from the collar 4.
in operation. the container is filled with teed or water and the base is threaded thereonto while the container occupies a vertical position. the handle 13 being operated to move the disk into scaling: engagement with the discharge mouth of the container. The. parts are now inverted and placed in the position of Figure and since the disk 9 seals the container mouth. the contents of the container are prevented from regressing. The handle l3, is now manipulated to move the disk sway from the container mouth thus permitting the container contents to flow through the openings 5 and into the trough.
The eccentric 10 moves to the left of Figure 2. consequently same supports one side of the dislt. while the stop 14 supports the opposite side. when the disk is in inoperative position.
The handle 13. is formed and located so as to engage the upper edge of rim 1 to thereby limit pivotal movement of the eccentric in both directions.
What is claimed is 1. In a poultry feeder, a base having a. rim and bottom. an interiorly threaded collar on the bottom spaced from the rim to form a. trough in conjunction therewith and having discharge openings, a container threaded into engagement with the collar threads, a
