Description

April .1 1924i AQBEESON um FOR M ngus-Hans Filed Aprn is. 1922 Patented Apr. l, 1924.
ARTHUR BEESON, 01 ADELAIDE,
MEANS FOR FASTENING HEELS.
Application filed April 5,
'3 Australia, residing at Unle Road, Unley,
Adelaide, in the State of South Australia, Connnonwealth of Australia, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Fastening Heels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved method of and means for fastening heels to the soles of boots or shoes, the object of the invention being to provide means whereby a heel can be fastened to or removed from the remaining portion of a boot or shoe for which purpose I provide a slotted slide plate which is fastened to the up per portion of the heel and I provide a. clamp plate which is adjustably attached to the insole or filler, the arrangement being such that when the parts are fitted together they are brought into close contact with each other and locked by means of screws which pass through the insole or filler and operate upon the clamp plate.
But in order that my invention may be more clearly understood I will now describe the same by aid of the accompanying illustrative drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a plan of the slotted slide plate attached to the upper portion of the heel.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the clamp plate.
Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the clamp plate. 7
Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation showing the insole fitted with screws and attached to the clamp plate.
Fig. 5 is a sectional end view of the heel showing the associated parts in their respective positions. 7 v
Ineach of the illustrations similar letters'of reference are used to denote similar or corresponding parts wherever they occur.
In the drawings a is the slotted slide plate attached to the heel by means of nails or screws a, the slide plate being slightly curved or dished to the contour of the upper portion of the heel and is further characterized by the formation of the longitudinal slot (1 i In Figs. 2 and 3 I have shown the clamp plate b which consists of a plate of metal preferably of the shape shown though not necessarily conforming to the drawings in this respect, but being provided with screw 1922. Serial No. 549,672.
threaded holes 6 which if so desired may have their walls extended by any convenient means to afford a greater thickness for the screw threads as will be well understood on reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings. This clamp plate is further characterized by having its rearward end slightly deflected upwards as shown at b to constitute a lock lip, a modification of such construction being permissible by the formation of indented bosses for the application of a thickening strip. I
It is also desirable that the clamp plate should be so constructed that its forward end 6 extends beyond the alignment of the heel which is indicated by the dotted line so as to form an extension for the further support of the insole or waist of the shoe or of parts corresponding thereto. I
Adjustment screws either with large flat heads or with washers c are accommodated within the leather insole or filler cl and are countersunk therein so as to lie flush with the upper surface of the insole. These screws engage in the screw threaded holes or openings 6' of the clamp plate, a small space being left between the upper side of the clamp plate and the underside of the leather insole, such space being suflicient to accommodate the slotted slide plate first mentioned.
In applying my invention to actual use the heel and the insole are respectively fitted with a slide plate and a clamp, the arrangement being such that when the clamp plate is slipped underneath the slide plate as in Fig. and the lock lip on the end of the clamp plate extends beyond the back of the slotted slide plate, the screws can be tightened thus drawing the plates together and causing the heel to be securely attached to the insole of the boot or shoe.
I do not confine myself to any particular size of thickness of material, but the original illustrations accompanying this specification are approximately full size for an ordinary shoe and the shoes and heels may be standardized so as to render them interchangeable with each other.
The extension 6 of the clamp plate will further add to the rigidity of the structure by aflording support to the portion of the insole or filler which extends forward of the heel.
I claim- 1. Means for fastening heels comprising dber when the plate is inserted to its full position in the heel, V
2. The combination with the sole of. a
1' shoe, of an attachable heel theretorhaving depressed portion in its upper face, a
' slotted member secured to the said upper face of the heel the slot therein overlying the said depression, and a clamp plate secure-fl to the said sole and separated therefrom by fastening means, the said clamp plate having an ofi'set. extension at its end and, being inserted into the depression of the heel below the slotted member whereby the outer face of the latter mayv be held closely adjacent the surface of the sole and the said extension is ei'igaged the innermost edge ofthe heel member opposite the end of the said slot. p SLTlIQ COHIblHaIlOIl as claimed in claim 2; in which the clam plate is providedwith fprojec'tions adapted to project through the i slotted member to the surface of the sole,
substantially as described. 7 V 7 1 4:. T he combmation as claimed 1n cla m 2,
bedded 'i .1 ,essae r metal plate having the slot open at one,
end to receive the clamp plate without detaching'the. latter from the s tially as described. V V
The combination as claimed in claim 2, wherein the fastening 7 means. for the clamp plate comprises ad ustable screws the heads of which arecountersunk into the surface of the sole, and conicalwashers viinded with lateral flangesto margill; support the Washer about the screw 6. In a means for fastening heels to the sales of footwear, a one piece clamp plate having a continuous formation with em hossed screwthreaded epenings therein, said platebeing provided with a locking lip," a slotted slide plate to be engaged by said lip,
and an extension in the clamp plate to: pro-'7 ject'above and beyond the alignment of the heel for supportin the insole'or waist of V the shoe. i
In testimony whereof he has aflixe'd his ole, 'substanin the sole, substantially as described. f
