vCOMBINED NOTEBOOK STAND AND VANITY CASE.
Application filed February 6, 1923. Serial No. 617,375.
To all whom it malpwmwem: v
Be it known that Knnvm R. Pnnmurs, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Prescott, Arizona, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Notebook Stands and Vanity Cases, which invention is fully set forth 1n the following-specification.
This invention relates to a combined book stand and receptacle for toilet articles and more particularly to a combined stenographers note book stand and vanity case.
This invention has for one of its objects the provision of a stenographers note book stand having a vanity case attached thereto, so that the stenographer using the note book stand will always have access, to certain toilet articles used to maintain her neat and attractive appearance, without the necessity of carrying an individual article or articles for this purpose.
Another object of this invention is to provide a support, both for a stenographers note book and a vanity case, which'structure serves, to cover and protect as well as conceal the vanity case when the same is not in use.
Another object of this invention is to provide a stenographers note book stand having a vanity case attached thereto in such manner as to be normally concealed from view but capable of being readily moved to a position where the same may be viewed and access had to the contents thereof.
Other objects of this invention relate to the provision of a combined book-stand and vanity case which includes features of adju'stability and general use; which is compact, simple in construction, ornamental, useful and inexpensive to manufacture.
This invention may receive a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, but it is to be expressly understood that the drawings are for purposes of illustration only and are not to be construed as defining the limits of the invention, reference being had to the appended claims for this purpose.
In said drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the combined book-stand and vanity case, the latter being shown in its position of use.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
tion at the free end of said sup Fig. 3 is a perspective view, the dotted line showing the manner of supporting a notebook on'the device, and
F1g. 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 indicate respectively a front support and a rear support both-made of sheet metal, or any other suitable material, and connected together at one end by. a hinge 3 whereby said supports may be folded together when not in use or moved apart to provide an inclined book-stand.
The hinge members 3, 3, are preferably formed integrally with the supports land 2 and provided with a pi'ntle 4 (Fig. 4) threaded at its ends to receive wing-nuts 5 which may be tightened to bind the hinge parts and lock the supports in folded or open position, or in any desired position of inclination.
The supports 1 and 2 are angularly bent at their free ends to provide feet 6, 7 and clips8, 9, said feet preferably having felts 10 suitably secured to their under surfaces 7 for the purpose of preventing the stand from scratching or otherwise disfiguring;- the surface on which it is placedand also to prevent the stand from slipping on said surface.
As shown in Fig. 3 the supports 1 and 2, in their inclined position, are adapted to hold a stenographers note-book 11, the free ends of said book being engaged by clips 8 and 9, one edge of book 11 also being engaged by clips 12 and 13 projecting from one side of said supports and over-hanging the same. A stop 14 at the opposite side of support 1 engages book 11 to prevent accidental displacement of the same while in use with the support. A pencil shelf 15 1s provided on support 1, said shelf preferably being a continuation of the bent porort.
A vanity case, indicated at 163s mounted on the book-stand in such manner as to be normally concealed, covered and protected thereby but capable of being moved outwardly to a position where said case will be exposed to view and access readily obtained to the contents thereof. Any suitable means for securing these results may be employed. In the embodiment shown case 16 is attached u, tothe back of sup ort l by a bolt 17 which passes through sai support at one side'edgc thereof and through an car 18 projecting from one side of said case. The outward movement above referred to will, in the embodiment herein described, be a swinging motion of the case 16 about bolt 17 as a pivot. Stops 1-) and 20 on the back of support 1 limit the outward and inward swingm movement of case 16. Bolt 17 is preferably provided with a locking nut 21 whereby the vanity case may be locked either in its concealed or visible positions as desired. The vanity case 16 is provided with com- 'partnients 22 for the reception of toilet articles and the like, one of said compartments preferably having secured therein a mirror 23. I
Case 16 when in its normal or concealed position lies flush with the surface of support 1, Wl1l0h in addition to concealing the case also serves as a protecting cover for compartments 22 whereby the contents of said compartments will at all times be kept in a fresh and sanitary condition.
It will be observed that this invention provides an article essential to the use and habits of the competent and neat female stenographer which, in addition to serving the purpose of a book and vanity case support, also serves as a cover for said case and effectually conceals the same when not in use. It will also be observed that the vanity case is uncovered by moving the same outwardly from its concealedposition to its visible position of use.
What is claimed is 1. The combination of a pair of members hinged together at one end whereby the same may be moved apart to provide an'inclined support, and a vanity case movably mounted on one of said members and normally concealed and covered by the same.
2. The combination of a pair of inclined supporting members hinged together at their upper ends, means for locking said members in any desired position of inclination, and a vanity case normally covered by one of said inclined members and pivotally mounted on the same. i
3. The combination of ing members hinged together at one end, means for locking said members in any desired position with respect to each other, and a vanity ease normally concealed between said members and movably mounted on one of the same.
4. The combination of a front supporting member and a rear supporting member both hinged together at one end whereby the same may be moved apart to provide an inclined stand, and avanity ease movably mounted on the front supporting member and normally concealed thereby, said vanity case beim accessible by moving the same outwarly from one side of its support.
5. The combination of a front su porting member and a rear supporting member both hinged together at one end whereby the same may be moved apart to provide an inclined support, nuts threaded on the ends of, the hinge pintle for locking said members in any desired position with respect to each other, and a vanity case pivotally mounted on the inner side of said front sup orting member and normally concealed t ereby, said vanity case bein accessible by swinging the same outwardly from one side of its support.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification.
KERVIN R. PHILLIPS.
