Be it known that I, Lrlo J. BINDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of lVashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to grates and in particular to that type of structure wherein each grate bar comprises a skeleton frame, a plurality of fuel supporting sections mounted on the frame and means for connecting each section to the sections adjacent thereto.
The objects of this invention are to provide a grate of the type referred to in which the parts will be firmly held together when in position, and may be readily removed to permit replacement of any particular sec tion, the construction being of such nature that the connections are not detrimentally affected by the heat to which the fuel supporting sections are subject.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain features of structure, combination and relations which will be set forth more fully hereinafter.-
I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a grate bar constructed in accordance with my invention, with one of the grate sections partly broken away;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the assembled grate bar with parts in section.
Figure 3 is a plan view of a part of the skeleton frame, a portion of one of the removable grate sections being shown in section;
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical section taken on line H of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the removable grate sections;
Figure 6 is a perspective of one of the side bars;
Figure 7 is a perspective view of one of the end sections.
Referring to the drawings wherein similar numerals denote like parts throughout the several views:
Each grate bar comprises the side members 1, and end members 10, the side members being supported by the end members and the removable sections 2 by the side members; The side membersas shown are usually associated in pairs. The side mem as at 3, whereby any ashes or dust are prevented from clinging to the framework and with undercut wedge retaining flanges or ears 4 projecting from their respective sides at the approximate longitudinal center of the bar. These flanges or ears 1- provide relatively vertical channels for the wedge or spacing plate 5' whose function is to maintain the bars in spaced relation. This wedge or spacing plate is of increasing thickness from the bottom to the top whereby it will be maintained in position in the channels provided by the flanges or ears 4. The spacing plate is further provided with side flanges 6 which are adapted to engage the undercut portions of the ears on the side bars and has its top edge beveled, as at 7.
The side members 1 are formed with hooked ends or heads, as at 8, and these ends or heads fit into chambers or housings 9 provided in the removable end sections 10. The hooked ends of'the side bars take over pins 11 which are horizontally disposed within the housing 9. The end member 10 is formed with a relatively flat and smooth upper surface 11 and is further provided with an obliquely disposed dove-tail slot 12 and a dove-tail tongue or extension 13. The
upper surface 11 is formed with a plurality I of air holes 18.
The removable grate sections 2 which may have openings of any shape or form are mounted upon the side bars 1. These sections are provided on their ends with hooked ends or extensions 14 which are adapted to engage the dove-tail tongue 13 of the end section or with similar projections on the other grate sections whereby the grate sections present an end to end interlocked structure and further have longitudinal bottom flanges 15 which are adapted to overlap the side members 1. The hooked ends or extensions 14: of the grate sections are smaller in area than the recesses in the sections into which they fit whereby air spaces 19 are provided between the different sections and any deformation or binding of the sections due to expansion under the influence of heat is obviated. The sections also carry lugs 16 on their lower faces, these lugs being adapted to fit into recesses 17 formed in the side bars. I I
In practice, the end members of the grate bars rest u on any suitable supporting means provi' ed within a furnace, and as set forth above, the removable sections of the grate bars are supported upon these means. In case the grate bar or any section of the bar becomes damaged or incapacitated for use in any Way it may be readily removed and a new bar inserted. Instead, however, of rem ving the entire bar from the furnace, it is apparent that any of the parts may be removed without the necessity of taking out the bar and the damaged sections may readily be replaced or renewed.
' I claim 1. In a grate bar, a pair 01" bars, end sections detachably connected to said side bars, and a plurality of grate sections formed with hooked ends mounted on said side bars, said hooked ends extending in a horizontal plane When mounted on the side bars, the hooks on the corresponding end of each section being identical in shape and position and those on the opposite ends of each section extending laterally in opposite directions.
2. In a grate bar, a pair of side bars provided with beveled top edges andpairs of undercut ears projecting from the sides thereof forming vertical channels, a tapered plate positioned between said side bars, said 1 names tapered plate having end flanges adapted to fit in said vertical channels and having a beveled upper edge, end sections detachably connected to said side bars and a plurality of grate sections mounted on said bars said sections being connected together by dovetailed hook members. 7
3. In a grate bar, a pair of end members, a pair of side bars having hooked ends and channels formed intermediately of their ends, housings on' said end members and pins in each housing for supporting said hooked ends, dove-tailed hooks on said end members, a plurality of grate sections having dove-tailed hook members interlocking With each other and with the hook members on said end members, a tapered Wedgeshaped spacing member between the side bars received in the intermediate channels in said side bars; the grate sections having flanges overlapping said bars.
