DAJTIEL HANDELAN, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
REGISTER FOR HOT-AIR FURNACES.
Application-filed March 14, 1922.
To all 107mm it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, DANIEL I-IANDELAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registers for Hot-Air Furnaces, of which the follow ing is a specification.
My invention relates to registers for hot air furnaces. An object is to provide a reg ister embodying mechanism having a manually operable member whereby successive impulses may be imparted to cause the register to move alternately into closed and opened position. Another object is to provide a register embodying a plurality of louvers having pockets filled with plastic material to correspond with the ceiling or walls of the room provided with the register.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description, and the novel features embodied in my inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanyng drawings which illustrate the application of my invention, Fig. 1 is a view of the register in section on the line. 1-1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a view in sec tion on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a view in section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing the register operated into open position. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view in section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view showing a slight modification, this view corresponding to the similar portion of Fig. 1.
My register is intended for use particularly in connection with overhead hot air furnaces in which the hot air is delivered from a'flue down through a register in the ceiling but the register may also be placed in the side walls of rooms to be heated and may also be used for ventilating purposes. As shown in the drawings, a plurality of louvers 12 is pivoted at their ends upon pivots 14 attached to a casing 16. The louvers consist of metal or other rigid channel members 18, the channels providing pockets which are filled with plaster on other plastic material 20. The louvers are connected by a bar 22 which is pivotally attached to ears 24 mounted on the ends of the louvers. The bar 22 is connected by a link 26 with a ratchet wheel 28 mounted for rotation upon a shaft 29. This shaft Serial No. 543,619.
also has rotatably mounted thereon a pulley V 30 which is provided with a projection 32 to which one end of a spring 34 is attached, the other end of the spring being attached to the casing 16 so that the spring tends to hold the projection 32 in contact with a fixed stop 36. A pawl 38 is normally held in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 28 by a spring 40, the latter being secured at one end to the face of the pulley 30 and the pawl being pivotally attached to the face of the pulley. A flexible element 42 is secured at one end to the pulley '30, and this element after extending part way around the pulley and then through an open ing in the ceiling adjacent an end of one of the louvers as shown in Fig. 5 is provided at its other end with a ball 44 by means of which it may be readily pulled. Fig. 4 shows a hot air flue 46 connected with the casing 16 for delivering hot air to the register. The slight modification shown in Fig. 6 is similar to the form already de scribed, the difference being that in this form the louvers instead of being pivotally attached at their middle to the are attached thereto attheir edges by pivots 14 whereby the louvers will be flush with the ceiling 0 when in open position as well as when in closed position.
I claim:
1. A register for hot air furnaces comprising a plurality of louve-rs having pocket-s filled with plastic material whereby the reg ister when closed presents a substantially unbroken continuation of the adjacent wall surface.
2. A register for hot arr furnaces com prising a plurality of louvers consisting of channel members filled with plastic material 15 DANIEL HANDELAN.
