COMBINATION LOCK.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN M. STRMIo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combination Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the-accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. l i i The invention relates to improvements in combination locks, and has among its various objects the provision of a construction which. is applicable for use in connection with a lock employing a shackle similar to the ordinary padlock. p
The inventionhas as an object the pro-. duction of a construction which engages the shackle and holds it in connected relation to the'remainder of the look while certain parts are manipulated to lock the shackle against separation. It is a further object of the invention to employ this holding means to hold the shackle in its closed relation to the remainder of the look, even though the locking m'eansis positioned to release it, demanding the manipulation of this holding means before the shackle can be released, which upon its release automatically disengages itself and permits the lock, including the shackle, to be removed from the staple, hasp or other device to which it may be attached. i
The invention willbe explained in detail in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which one embodiment of the invention is disclosed, it being obvious that others may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.

The structure disclosed in the drawings contemplates the use of a shackle 10. This shackle is U-shaped and is permanently secured at one end, the opposite end being releasably locked and rotatable to permit it to be positioned to allow the removal or attachment of the lock to the staple, hasp or other element, and to position said end so that it may be operated to be engaged by the holding means hereinbefore referred to. The opposite endof the shackle is mounted in an enlargement 1 1 which is provided with an aperture 12, into which this end of the shackle is arranged for rotatable and reciprocable motion, it being held with relation thereto by means of the transversely arranged pin 513. This end of the shackl is provided with'the reduced portion 1a which by virtue'of the pin 13 limits the vertical movement of the shackle, yet permits it to rotate.
A coiled spring 15 is arranged in the recess and reacts between the extreme end of this end of the shackle and the end of the recess andprovides a. means for automatically actuating the shackle to separate it when released by the locking means and permits the opposite end to be positioned so itmay be engaged thereby. i. This last mentioned and of the shackle is .removablyl arranged in an aperture 16 provided in the element 17, between which andthe element 11 the rotatable lock controlling elements 18, 19 and 20 are arranged, the latter being rotatably mounted upon a tubular member 21 which extends from the element 11. The element 17 is arranged upon the end of this tubular member and is held with relation thereto by means of the nut 22, which is threaded upon the end of'the tubular extension 21. This element 17 has an inwardly projecting lug 23 which is arranged in a groove 24; provided in the extension and prevents this element from rotating with respect to the extension and other elements. The outer face of the element 17 is provided with a recess 25 within which is arranged a disc 26 having an annular flan e or extension 27, the outer periphery 0 which is beveled as shown at 28. This flange extends into the path of the end 29 of the shackle which is provided with the notch30 which cooperates with the flange 27 of the disc, the two cooperating to releasably hold the shackle in locked relation to each other. 7
This disc 26 has an inwardly projecting stem 30 which is reciprocably arranged in the bore 31 of the extension 21. A sleeve 32 is arranged upon this stem and is held with relation to the remainder of the device by means of the set screw 33 which is in threaded engagement with the tubular extension 21, and is preferably centrally ar-. ranged with respect to the aperture 16 so and stem to be moved to release or con-' nect the flange 27 and the notch 30 of the shackle, when other controlling mechanism is positioned so as to permit of this.
The disc 26 is further provided with a knob 27 so that the flange may be operated to disconnect it y from the notch of the shackle. The groove 24 previously referred to extends inwardly along the tubular ex- 1 tension and a reciprocable bar 38 having an extension 39 projecting therefrom through the aperture 40, is arranged in this groove. This bar is furtherprovided with a flat spring which tends to move the bar outwardly and to release the pin from its engagement with the annular recess 35 of the stem 30. 4
As before stated the elements 18, 19 and 20 are rotatably arranged upon the extension 21 and control the movement of the reciprocable bar 38. -Each' of these rotatable elements are provided with a notch 41 which when brought into all ment with the bar permits the bar toget er with the pin to move outwardly and disconnect the stem and the pin allowing the disc and stem to be operated to disconnect the flange of the disc from the notch provided in the end of the shackle. At this time the coiled spring 15 acts and disconnects the end 29 of the shackle. A plurality of apertured discs 42 are employed, one for each rotatable ele ment 19, 20 and 21. Each of these'discs is 7 provided with notches 43, one of which is arranged in alignment with the movable bar 38 so as to permit the bar to recede without interference when the rotatable elements 18 to 20 are positioned so as to permit the bar to move. Each of these discs is further providedwith a projection 44 which may be arranged in any one of the several parallel grooves 45 provided upon the outer circumference of the extension. The rotatable elements 18 to 20 are each provided with the spring pressed detent 46, the ball of which cooperates with the apertures inthe disc 42 and holds its respective rotatable element in adjusted position.

Thus by varying the distance between this blank space and the bar of any of the rotatable elements, each of the latter will have to be moved a relatively different distance to effect-an unlocking of the elements.
Presuming that .the end 29 of the shackle is disconnected and it isdesired to lock same with relation to the remainder of the device, the end 29 is inserted in the aperture 16 and pressure is applied to the shackle. This causes the notch 30 to ride across the flange. 27 of the disc which snaps into the notch and holds the shackle in locked relation, and upon the rotation of one of the rotatable elements, the bar and pin are depressed causing the pin to enter the recess 35 of the stem which holds the'latter against separation, and the shackle in locked relation. When the notches 41 of all of the rotatable elements are brought into alignment with each other and with the bar, the bar may again recede from the groove 40, dissociating the pin and the recess of the stem, permitting the disc which is connected thereto to be moved outwardly, which disconnects the fiange from the notch of the shackle and permits the shackle to be dis connected.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim and desire to cover by Letters Patent is:
1. In a lock, the combination of a shackle, amember to which one end of the shackle is permanently fastened, said member having .a tubular. extension, a rotatable element arranged upon the extension, amember arrangedfor reciprocation within the tubular extension, means for engaging said last mentioned member and releasably locking said beinr controlled by the rotatable element arranged upon the extension said member which is arranged withinthe extension having means for releasably engaging the opposite end of said shackle.
2. In a lock, the combination of a shackle, a member to which one end of the shackle is connected, a tubular extension, a member arranged to be reciprocated with respect to said extension to engage and release the shackle, means for releasably locking the reciprocable member with respect to the extension,-said means including a rotatable and a reciprocable member the latter of which is movable to engage and release said second mentioned member.
3. In a lock, the combination of a shackle and means for locking and releasing the same, said means including a reciprocable member having an annular flange for engaging said shackle, a movable member for engaging the reciprocable member, rotatable elements for controlling the last mentioned member, and means for'maintaining the reciprocable member and said rotatable elements in associated relation, said annular flange being arranged to prevent access to said last mentioned means.
4. In a lock, the combination of a shackle, an 'apertured member adapted to receive an end of this shackle and means for locking and releasing the same, said means including a reciprocable member having an annular flange for engaging said shackle, a movable member for engaging the reciprocable member, means for maintaining the flange in contact with said shackle and means for maintaining the reciprocable member in cooperative relation to the shackle, access to said means being prevented when said shackle is arranged in the apertured member.
5. In a lock, the combination of a shackle and means for locking and releasing the same, said means including a reciprocable member having a flange for engaging said shackle, a movable member for engaging the reciprocable member and means for maintaining the flange in contact with said shackle, said means including a spring and a stationarily mounted member carried by the reciprocable member.
6. In a lock, the combination of a shackle, a member to which one end of the shackle is connected, a tubular extension, a member arranged to be reciprocated with respect to the extension, means for locking said reciprocable member With relation to the extension, said reciprocable member having means for releasably engaging the shackle and having means cooperating with said locking means and means for holding the locking means in associated relation with the member to which the shackle is connected, said means of the reciprocable member for engaging the shackle being arranged to prevent access to said last mentioned means.
