nrnnnno meearrny, or NEW YORK, my.
sunsnann non. HATS.
Application filed March 14, 1923. Serial No. 625,075;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, Hrtnnnn ll loGArrnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sunshades for Hats, of which the followin is a specification.
This invention relates to sun shades such as are used in conjunction with hats and especially niens hats.
Some of the objects of the present invention are: as a new article of manufacture for use in conjunction with a hat, a shade element capable of encircling the crown of the hat. capable of being supported by the brim of the hat, and large enough to extend beyond the edge of said brim to increase the shading capabilities of the hat from a usual condition to an unusual condition; to employ on an article just characterized an anti-glare part which when the hat with the article thereon is on the head of a person will be disposed with respect to the eyes of the person to subdue light reflected ordinarily by a portion of the hat and to eliminate the glare incident to sharp reflections of light; to employ a preferably green colored anti-glare part; to produce an article having the characteristics mentioned which is further especially suitable for car rying and displaying advertisements. lVith these and other objects in view the invention resides in the particular provision and relative disposition of parts, and the simplicity and manner of application of the article hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan of the article as it appears when out from a piece of material from which it is made.
Figure 2 is a view of the underside of the completed article.
Figure 3 illustrates a step in the application of the article to a hat-preferably a straw hat having the fiat straight brim.
Figure 4 illustrates the application of the article to the hat; the article being shown in section.
Referring now more particularly to the several views of the drawing for the details it will be apparent that the article of the present invention is made from a single piece of material such as stout paper, and is fashioned to provide a shade-proper 10 and a part 11, the latter being carried by the former. The shade-proper 10 has a substantially central opening 12 therein which is substantially ovoidal as is the contour or outline 13. The part 11 is carried at a point of the shade-proper 10 which will be the front thereof and is brought to lay adjacent a portion of the shade-proper on a side of the shade-proper which will be the underside thereof. The end 14 of the part 11 is fastened as at 15, 15, to the shadeproper with any preferred fastening elements. 'The part 11 is so shaped that when the same is arranged as stated it conforms in outline to the portion of the shade-proper under which it is disposed. By arranging and fastening the part 11 as set forth a pocket is had for the reception of a portion of the brim 16 of the'hat 17 as shown in Figure 3. By virtue of the opening 12 in the shade-proper 10 the latter may be brought down on the brim 16 to be supported thereby, whereas, the crown 18 of the hat will be disposed in the opening 12. The shade-proper 10 will be large enough to have a marginal portion thereof extending beyond the edge of the brim 16 entirely around said brim.
The part 11 will be colored green on one side thereof and that will be accomplished in a printing operation in which an advertisement of any preferred purport is printed on the same side of the material on the shade-proper 10. It should now be manifest that the completed article will have advertising matter printed on its shadeproper 10 on the top face thereof, whereas, the part 11 on the bottom face thereof will be green. Being green on its bottom face the part 11 will act as an anti-glare means to subdue the bright or sharp light rays which would ordinarily be reflected from the white shiny under surface of the front portion of the brim 16 into the eyes of a person wearing the hat. A greenish hue would be created with the result that the eyes will noti1 be affected by the glare of reflected 1i 1;.
From the foregoing it should be manifest that the article of the present invention is extremely simple; that because of its simplicity it will be inexpensive; that it serves as a shade to shade the rays of sun to a further degree than would the brim of a hat upon which it is supported; that it eliminates the glare caused by reflection of light rays; and that advertising matter thereon will necessarily be displayed to the gaze of, persons behind and above a person wearing the same at a baseball Park for instance.
It is to be understood that the article is to be made in various sizes and proportions and of any preferred material.
What I claim is:
1. As a new article of manufacture for use in conjunction with a hat, a shade element of ovoidal configuration having an ovoidal opening therein, a part integral with the shade proper arranged on the front edge of the same, and adapted to be folded over the front of the shade proper so that one edge of the same terminates adjacent the ovoidal opening, and the other edge registers with the periphery of said shade proper, means for fastening said part to said shade proper after the same has been folded thereover, whereby t0 define a pocket for the reception of the front portion of the brim of a hat when applying the article to the hat, the rear of the shade proper being pulled down over the hat 'to bring the crown of the hat down through the ovoidal opening.
2. As a new article of manufacture for use in conjunction with a hat a shade element comprising a shade-proper, a part integral with said shade-proper adapted to be folded over a portion of said shade-proper, and means for fastening the end of said part to said shade-proper after the same has been folded to form a pocket for the reception of a portion of the brim of the hat therein in the application of the element to the hat, and a marginal portion of the shade-proper extending beyond the edge of the brim in the application of the element.
In testimony whereof Iherelby affix my signature. 7 V
HILDRED MOGAFFEY.
