Oil-Cans.
Paxented March 1o. 1874.
EDVARD T. SOHOONMA KER, OF NEWT PATENT QFFIGE..
Your., N. Y., Assrouon or ONE-THIRD HIS RIGHT TO JOHN E. SMITH, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN OIL-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,51 1, dated March l0, 1874 application filed November 22, 1873.
To all whom it mayconcern:
Be it known that l, EDWARD T. SoHooN- MAKER, ofthe city, county, and State oi' New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans, ot' which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of oil-cans used i'or lubricating purposes which are provided with a drip or waste cup surrounding the discharge nozzle and containing an absorbent material. The invention consists in an oil can or cup having a separate or independent discharge nozzle or tube and a detachable drip or waste cup, said nozzle being provided at its lower end wit-h a disk, which rests directly upon the shouldered upper end of the body ot the can, an internally screw-threaded neck or socket being also applied to the can, for the reception et' the screw-tlueadcd shank of the drip or waste cup, which` bea-rs upon the upper surface ot' the disk ot' the discharge-nozzle, and thus serves to retain the same in position,
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vert-ical sectional view of an oil-can constructed according to my invention. Fig. 9 is a transverse section taken on the plane of the line .r a', Fig. l.
The letter A designates the body of an oilean. er hand oiler, which is constructed in the ordinary manner, and provided with a neck or socket, a, permanently attached, by soldering or otherwise, to the upper portion of the can. The neck a is formed with an internal screwthread, and is designed to receive a correspoiulingly screw-threaded shank, b, of a drip or waste cup, O. The cup is open at its top, and the sha-nk of the same is provided with a central openingl or bore, through which extends the discharge nozzle or tube B, having at its lower end a disk, c, which rests or is supported directly upon a shoulder, d, formed by the upper end of the body of the can and the screw-neck a. The disk ot the nozzle is supported by said shoulder, or the upper end of the can-body; and upon the top of the disk there is caused to bear the lower end of the shank of the drip-cup, so as to retain the discharge-nozzle iirmly in position without the aid of other fastening devices. The drip or waste cup is, preferably, of a spherical form, and is contracted or reduced somewhat in diameter at its upper end, so as to retain in position an absorbent filling of some fibrous ma terial.
The cup G is designed to receive the waste or overiow passing down on the outside of the discharge-nozzle, so as to obviate the soiling ot the body of the can, while the iibrous material in the cup serves to absorb the oil.
By constructing an oil-can or hand oiler with a detachable discharge-nozzle and a drip-cup, serving, in addition toits legitimate use, to secure the nozzle in position, a cheap, simple, and effective oiler is produced, which offers every facility for disconnecting the various parts of the same for eleansin g and filling purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The oil-can herein described, consisting of the body A, having a permanent internally screw-threaded neck or socket, a, and a discharge nozzle or tube, B, provided with a bottom disk, c, supported by the shouldered upper end d of the body of the can, and secured in position by a detachable drip or waste cup, C, having a screw-threaded shank, I), all constructed as herein set forth.
