J. QUIGLEY KEY RING- Filed March 6 r niiiiating Patented Feb. 19, 1924.
unirsi) STATES rarer taeter JAMES B. QUIGLEY, OF INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI.
citizen of the United States,
of Independence, State ot' KEY RING.
Application filed March 6, 1923. Serial No. 62.31.216.
concern. I, JAMES B. QUieLnY, a and a resident in the county of Jackson, Missouri, have invented certain new and usetul Improvements in Key Rings, of which the following is a. speeitication.
This invention relates to improvements in key rings.
The object oi"v the invention is a key ring which to provide is exceedingly easy to n'ianipulate for locking a key thereon or releasing the saine.
lt is also within of the invention th ingly Simple in cons to manufacture.
Other objects rel the scope of the objectsV at the device be exceedtruction and inexpensive ating to details of construction will hereinafter appear in the detailed description to follow.
The invention is ilhiistrated by way et example in the accompanying drawings, in
which:
Figure 1 vice and showing conventional torni showing a` key locke is a perspective view of the dethe saine attached to a. of split ring and also d thereon,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view or' the device, and
Figure 3 is a view in side elevation of the device, the body portion thereof shown in longitudinal section in order to clearly ilj lustrate the workin vice.
g mechanism ot the de Referring to the drawings more particularly, 1t) indicates generally a stein which is provided with an enlarged bore 1l ter- 12. fitted a Y at its upper end in a reduced bore lV'ithin the bore 12 there is slidably pin 13, said pin terminating at its lower lend in a circular head 14 which is foi-ined with-a. V-shaped lug 15, said lug Y being' in axial alignment with the pin. v'l'he reduced bore ll pr ovides a' shoulder at its open end, as indicated at 16. and interposed between this shoulder and the head 14 oi the pin 13 is a coil spring 17. said coil spring` as is apparent being adapted to urge the pin 13 downwardly with respect to the stein 10.
Slid able upon the said sleeve carries stein 10 is a sleeve 1S and a pin 19 which. is disposed in longitudinally extending` slots 20 formed in the stem 1() and also extends through a suitable opening in the pin 13 as best shown in Fig ure 2 of the drawings.
As is obvious thesleeve i8 when moved upwardly upon the stein 1t) will carry therewith the Vpin 1B against resistance of the spring 17.
it 21 there is indicated a pair of semicircular jaws, each jaw terminating at its one end in a laterally disposed lug 22 and each lug being pointed, as shown. The end of each jaw 21 which terminates in the lug is flat and in the lower end ot' the stein l0 there is provided a pair ot' diametrica-lly oposed recesses 23. The lug portions 22 of the jaws 21 are fitted upon each other and inserted in the lower end ot' the stem 10, and pivotally connected to the stein by means of a transversely exteiiding pin or rivet 24. The recesses 23 permit the jaws to be swung upwardly or outwardly in the dotted line position shown in 'Fig 3, and thereby to pei-init one or more keys to be placed upon the saine. 'lhe free end ot' each jaw is provided with aii oit'set, so that the jaws may overlap each other when brought to the closed position as illustrated in Figures 2 and 8. The jaws may be of any desired cross section, however, preferably circular vas shown, and either jaw is adapted to be extended through the usual opening provided in the handle portion of a key. A key of this kind is shown in Figure l and indicated by the reference numeral 25.
The stem 10 may also be formed at its one end with av ring 2G and through this ring there may be threaded a split ring 27 of the usual construction, whereby the keyliolding device may be secured to a chain.
In the usc ot the present device, assuming av key placed upon one ot the'jaws 2l and that the jaws are closed, as shown in Fig. 1 the pin 13 will bc in the position 95 shown in Fig. 2l and the V-shaped lugr 'l5 will engage between the pointed lugs 22 ot the jawsQl and thusI lock the jaws against movenient with respect to cach other. The lugs ot the jaws 2l should register with each other when said jaws are closed upon each other. The spring 1T will at all times retain the pin 13 in this last named position.
lt' it is desired to remove the key from the jaws 21 then the sleeve 1S may be grasped and inoved toward the ring 26 upon the stein 1t). whereby the pin 13 will be moved so that its lug 15 will release the lugs and thus permit the jaws to open and in this way permit a key to be removed from said lio jaws. As is obvious the locking mechanism for the jaws 21 may be operated in an instant either to release or lock said jaws. i'
It may be here mentioned that this particular device is valuable to the driver of an automobile in ease that the automobile should have asteering wheel lock where two keys must be employed simultaneously for `unlocking the same. In such a case, the keys must be separated from each other, that is, both keys could not be used upon the. same ring, and by having a key ring which maybe quickly operated for releasing a key it would be of an advantage, as is apparent.
