Description

STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MGNIECE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOOL-HANDLES.
Spiciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,232, dated March 3, 1874; application led February 9, 1874.
To all whom yit may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM McNrncE, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tool-Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sutiicieut to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this speciticatiou, in which- Figure l is a side view oi the device embodyiu g my invention. Fi 2 is an edge view there of, the screw-thimble being removed. Fig. 3 is a side view of a portion of the tool detached from the handle, and a longitudinal sectional view of the thixnble. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal ection of the handle and thiinble.
Similar letters oi' reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures.
rIhis invention consists in providing the tang of the tool with screw-threads, with which engage or mesh the threads of a thimble applied to a slit handle, which receives the tang, and is also screw-threaded, so that the threads of the tang and handle are continuous of each other, whereby the connection of the tool and handle will be firm and reliable.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the tool, and B the handle thereof. The portion of the handle which receives the tang C of the tool is slit or divided longitudinally, as at a, for the reception of the tang, and the surface ot' said portion is screw-threaded, as at b. The side edges of the tang are formed with sections of a screw-thread, whose dimensions and pitch are equal to those of the thread b of the handle, so that when the tang is inserted in the slit a of the handle, there is produced on the handle a screw-thread which is continuous from commencement to termination, the threads of the tang and the handle constituting integral parts of the entire thread. D represents a thimble, which is threaded internally, and in order to be applied in position is passed over the tool, so as to be screwed on the threaded part of the handle B.
It will be seen that the thread of the thimble and the continuous thread of the handle engage snugly with each other, and every point oi' the thread will be fully occupied. The tool will be rmly locked and held bythe thimble, and the latter tightly secured to the handle, so that the tool will be prevented from longitudinal displacement or tearing out and lateral play, whereby a reliable connection between the tooland handle is produced.
I am aware that tool-handles have been chambered and slit for the reception of the tangs of the tools; and I am also aware that some tools have their tangs threaded to engage with an internally-threaded nut,'whose exterior surface is likewise threaded to screw into the handle. Such features are,.theret`ore, disclaimed. y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The tool A, having its tang C formed with the sections of a screw-thread, and the slit handle B formed with the screw-thread b, with which the thread of the tang is continuous, in combination with screw-thimble D, al1 constructed, arranged, and operating as herein set forth.
