IMPROVEMENT IN MECHANISMS FQR OPERATING HORSE-CAR BRAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. lgl, dated March 3, 1874; application filed December 11, 1873.
.new and useful Improvements in Brakes for Horse-Gars and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exaet description oi' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accolnpanying drawings, which form part of this specih'cation, in which- Figure 1 is an end view of a street-car with my improvement applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view or' said improvement. Fig. 3 is a side view ofthe same.V
This invention has relation to the means for operating the brakes of horse-cars; and it consists in the novel arrangement of gearing to facilitate the winding and unwinding of the brake-chains; and inthe construction and arrangement of a guard, to prevent passengers from leaning against the gearing and of devices whereby the latter may be readily attached to, and detached from, the platformrail of any horse-car of ordinary construction.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A designates the fender or guardot' a car-platform, to which is secured the rail B. B represents vthe vertical shaft, through which is wound the brake-chain B2, connected to the brake-lever in the ordinary manner. Upon the upper end of said shatt is xed, in lieu ot' the brake-handle or crank, a pinion, b. C designates a large-sized spur-wheel, having its shaft-bearing in a block, D, and furnished with the crank E, as shown. The Wheel C extends over the pinion b, and engages with an intermediate gear wheel, E1, which also engages with the pinion b, so that when the wheel C is turned motion will be conveyed to the brakeshaft Bf, and the latter quickly turned.
By this means the brakes may be operated with less trouble, and more rapidly than by the ordinary method.
The gearing might be arranged otherwise than as shown 5 but I adopt the arrangement illustrated, so as to allow the brakes to be put on and taken off7 by turning the crank to the right and to the left, and thus occasion no mistake in persons unaccustomed to th use of the gearing.

The object of this guard is to protect the driver or operator of the brake from the teeth of the wheels, and allow the latter to be turned without hindrance. The Wheels E C are journaled to blocks D D,.in order that they may be readily attached to, or detached from, the rail B, said blocks, for this purpose, being formed with recesses d, which receive said rail, as shown in Fig. 3. The blocks are secured in place by means of the bolts or screws d', inserted from the under sides thereof after the blocks have been fitted to the rail. The guard F may also be removable.
It will be observed that the gearing may be readily applied to any of the ordinary horsecars, no drilling of the rail being required.
Having fully described my invention, what I cla-im as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. rlhe spur-wheel C, pinion b, and intermediate gear-wheel E', arranged as shown, in combination withthe vertical shaft Bl of a horse-car brake, as and for the purpose specilied.
2. The fender F, attached to the rail of a car, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
3. The combination, with the gearing B C E, of the clamp D, consisting of the notched blocks d and bolts d', substantially as specied.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of November, 1873.
