.1. DOMPIER GARBAGE CAN Filed Aug. 2, 1922 I gwuzwl oz J: pom 122 61.
Patented Jan. 22, 1924.
TE TTES JOSEPH nomrrnn, or TOLEDO, onro.
GARBAGE CAN.
Application filed August 2, 1922. Serial No. 579,163.
1 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1', JOSEPH DOMPIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- ledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage Cans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to a receptacle for garbage or other refuse which is taken up periodically by a collector, and has for its primary object to facilitate the collection of such refuse without requiring the receptacle in position to insure a collection of the contents thereof.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different 2' conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor. details of construction may be resorted to without de arting from the nature of the invention.
eferring to the accompanying drawings forming a partof the application,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a garbage can and mountings therefor embodying the invention, showing the normal position of the parts for receiving garbage or other refuse,
Figure 2 is a side view showing the position of the parts when adjusted for dumping the contents of the can or receptacle, and
Figure 3 is a sectional detail.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The numeral 1 designates a fence such as commonly provided for enclosing a building lot. A framework 2 is provided adjacent the inner side of the fence 1 and projects some distance thereabove. This frame work may be of any approved construction and pivotally supports a frame 3. A shaft 4 is mounted in the upper portion of the framework 2 and for convenience is provided with a crank handle 5. The frame 3 is secured to the shaft 4 to turn therewith. The frame 3 has lateral arms 6 at one end which receive slides 7. A can or receptacle 8 is journaled to the slides 7. A bridle 9 connects the can or receptacle 8 with a crossbar 10 of the frame 3 and limits the turning of the can or receptacle whereby to insure a dumpingof the contents thereof as indicated most clearly in Figure 2. A cover 11 is hinged to a side of the can or receptacle 8 and operates as a deflector to insure delivery of the garbage or other refuse into the receiver when collecting the same. The frame 3 is pivotally supported intermediate its ends and is counterbalanced at the end opposite that provided with the arms 6 and the can or receptacle 8.
Figure 1 shows the normal position of the parts when the can or receptacle 8 is arranged to receive garbage or other refuse, the same being suspended from the ground and disposed upon the inner side of the fence 1. The collector-operates the crank handle 5 to turn the shaft 4 and frame 3, whereby the latter is reversed and the can or receptacle 8 thrown upwardly and outwardly,
- whereby it assumes the position indicated in Figure 2 so as to dump its contents into the wagon or other form of receiver utilized in the collection of the refuse. The pivotal movement of the frame 3 inverts the can or receptacle 8 and causes outward movement thereof on the arms 6, the tilting of the can being limited by the bridle 9 and the cover 11 swinging into open position and operating as a deflector to direct the refuse into the receiver. After the refuse has been dumped, the collector operates the crank handle 5 to return the parts to normal po sition substantially as indicated in Figure 1.
What is claimed is:
1. In an appliance of the character specified, a framework, a frame pivotally mounted thereon intermediate its ends and having lateral arms at one end and a counterbalance at its opposite end, slides mounted on said frame, and said bridle adapted to swing said receptacle on its journal to invert the re ceptacle and dump its contents.
3. In an appliance of the character specified, a framework, a frame pivot'ally'mounted thereon intermediate its ends and having lateral arms at one end and a. counter balance at its opposite end, slides mounted on said arms, a receptacle journaled to said slides, a bridle'between the receptacle and frame stops at the free ends of said lateral arms, and said 'bridle adapted to swing said, receptacle on its journals to invert the receptacle and dump its contents, said bridle becoming active as the receptacle slides to- 15 Ward the ends of said lateral arms.
In testin'iony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
