' Application ined November 29,1922. serial No. 604,066.
1o all whom t may concern:
Be it lrnown that WILLIAM J. KRIEG. a citizen ofthe United States of America, residing at Rochester', in the county of Monroe` and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in tnoclrdown Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a'press, and more particularly to the type of press adaptable for domestic use in pressing fruit and the like.
The object of my invention is to provide a compact and economical structure of few parts, which can be readily assembled or taken apart, and operated with efficiency and facility.
To these and other ends, the invention comprises the structure that will lappear clearly from the following description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying` drawings, the novel features being pointed out in the claim following the specification.
ln the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a press constructed in accordance with my invention, and showing in dotted lines the position of the crosshead when moved to inoperative position;
Figure 2 is an end elevation; n
Figure 3 is a vertical central sectional view on line 3 3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view on line 4-4 of Figure 1.
rPhe structure disclosed comprises a pair of ends including base portions 1 and upright portions 2, independent of the base portions and attached thereto by means of bolts 3. The base portions 1 and upright portions 2 are preferably made of metal, while 4 designates a support, preferably of wood, and connecting the ends. The support 4 may be secured to the base portions 1 by means of the same bolts 3 which also unite the upright portions 2.
Arranged upon the support 4 is a receptacle 5 having an outlet 6 through which juice from the pressed fruit is discharged, and 7 designates a container removably arranged within the receptacle 5 and resting on the support 4. The container 7 receives the material to be pressed and l8 designates a false bottom, having perforations 9 and supported on feet 10, whereby it is spaced above the bottom of the receptacle 5 and tacts with the mass to be pressed, and has a convex portion 12 at the center thereof.
The effect of this shape on the bottom of the follower is to produce maximum compression of the` mass underneath, distributing the pressure uniformly thereover, and also centering the follower in correct horizontal relationship.
The follower 11 is operated by a screw 13, the lower end of which loosely engages the follower and is removable therefrom. The screw 13 is operated by a handle 14 and moves vertically in a crosshead 15, which is pivoted at 16 to the upper end of one of the upright portions 2 and may be detachably connected to the upper end of the other upright portion. To this end, a removable pin 17 is provided, carried by a chain 18 which is attached to the frame, and when it is desired to move the crosshead and screw out of operative relationship, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1, the pin 17 is removed. It is sometimes difficult to loosen and remove the follower after application of considerable pressure, and to accomplish this, I provide means located at or near the edge of the follower by which it can be readily separated from` the compressed mass and removed from the container. ,Preferably this means is in the form of a lug 19, having an opening 20 to receive a suitable hook that may be used for the purpose. By pulling only at the edge of the' follower instead of centrally, it can be ioosened and removed with little difliculty.
In operating the press, assuming that the crosshead is inoperatively positioned, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1, the receptacle 5 is positioned on the support 4, the container 7 is then arranged in the receptacle 5, and the false bottom 8 is positioned at the bottom of the container. The
(ill
fruit or mass to be pressed is then inserted necting the bese portions a-ndlocated lbeneath (the, tops thereof, said upright portions being located above the tops of the base portions, attaching bolts each of which 1.5
is common to :iv base portion, upright portion, and the wooden support when in operative position eind acts to secure the up right portion and wooden Support to the base portion, a crosehead pivotally mounted on one of salidupright portions and detachably connected to the other of said upright portions, and e screw movable vertically in thecrossehead.
Inu witnees i whereof, I have hereunto 25 signed my name.
wiLLIAM J. Krane.
