PRESSER FOOT FOR SEWING MACHINES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, JOSEPH BERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presser Feet for Sewing Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanyin'g' drawing, and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a presser foot for a sewing machine, and more particularly to a presser foot which is adapted to be used in connection with a cover seaming mechanism.
An object of the invention is to provide a presser foot having a shiftable auxiliary sec tion in rear of the stitching mechanism with means for positively shifting said section so that the space or recess receiving the seam portion of the fabric sections may be adjusted to accommodate different thicknesses of seams.
A further object of the invention is to provide a presser foot of the above character with means for rigidly lockin the auxiliary sectionin any position to which it may be shifted.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
In the drawings which show by way of illustration. one embodiment of the invention:-

Means is provided for positively shifting this auxiliary section, an means is also provided for positively locking the auxiliary section in any position to which itis shifted. From certain aspects of the invention, the presser foot also includes a yieldin auxiliary section located on, the opposlte side of the shiftable auxiliary section from the main portion of the presser foot.-
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the presser foot is shown as applied to a sewing machine of the feed-oif-the-arm type. A work supporting arm is indicated at 1, the needle bar at 2, and said needle bar is provided with a plurality of needles 3, preferably three in number. Cooperating with the needles within the work supporting arm is a looper 4 carried by a looper shaft-5. This looper is of the thread carrying type. The material is fed off from the end of the work support by a feeding mechanism which includes a main feed dog 6 and an auxiliary feed dog 7.v The machine of the-type referred to is fully shown and described in the 19, 1920, Number 1,356,334, and further description thereof is not thought necessary.
The presser foot consists of a supporting shank 8 which is secured to a presser bar 9 of the usual construction. This shank 8 carries a main foot section 10 which is rigidly supported by the shank. Said main foot section and shank is provided with a vertically extendin'g portion 11 (see Fig. 4:) having an overhan ing lateral projection 12. Located alongsi e of the main foot section is an auxiliary foot section 13 which is pro- 'vided with an upstanding shank 14' having a laterally projecting late 15 perforated at 16, and also a lateral y projecting plate 17 cut away at 18. The auxiliary section 13 is raised and low- This screw has a relatively large fiat head which lies between the plates 15 and 17. Said head overlies the side walls of the slot 18 in the plate 17 and access is obtained to the slot in the head of the screw through the opening 16. This head substantially fits the space be tween the plates and therefore the screw ban be readily turned, but any endwise movement of the screw will raise or lower the auxiliary section 13, depending upon which waythe screw is turned. The screw is threaded into the overhanging portion 12 of the main section of'the presser foot. The shank 14 of the auxiliary section 13 is provided with a slot 22. The screw 23 passes through the slot and is threaded into the vertical portion 11 of the presser foot. The
auxiliary section is also provided with a slot 24 through which the screw passes, and said screw has a shoulder 25 which overlies the side walls of the slot 22, so that when the screw is turned in, the auxiliary section 13 may be firmly clamped. The auxiliary section 20 slides freely up and down in a guiding recess therefor, and is held in place by a cover plate 26. .A spring 27 bearing on the upper end of the auxiliary section yieldingly forces the same downwardly, and the screw 23 serves to limit the downward movement of this yielding section. The slot 24, however, ermits the yielding section to move upwardly so as to bring the under face of the yielding section in alinement with the main section 10 of the foot. There is sufiicient distance between the head of the screw 23 and the shoulder 25 so that when the auxiliary section 13 is rigidly clamped, the yielding section is free to move up and down.
The auxiliary section 13 is located in rear of the stitching mechanism and is provided with a cut away portion 28 which preferably tapers from its top rearwardly to the lower face thereof. Stitch fingers 29 and 30 are provided which project rearwardly into said cut away portion 28. The presser foot is provided with a guiding slot 31 which is so shaped as to receive the upturned edges of two fabric sections and direct the same to a trimming mechanism, after which said upturned sectlons are returned to overlapped relation and stitched by a covering stitching mechanism. This forms a covered seam of some thickness and the purpose of shifting of the covered seam, but without raising the main section of the foot from firm-contact with the section of the fabric underneath the same. Thus it is that the presser foot will hold the fabric sections at both sides of the seam and in the region of the scam in firm contact with the feed dogs of the feeding mechanism so as to insure a uniform feeding of the fabric sections. It is to be understood thatthis section 13 pla s no part in the chaining off between artic es as the stitch fingers perform this function in a manner well known in the art. If the thickness of the seam varies, on different characters of material, 'or with different threads, the section 13 may be positively shifted by loosening the screw 23 and turning the screw 21. After it has been shifted to proper position, then the screw 23 is turned in to lock it in this position. The section 13 therefore is always under the control of the screw 21 and is held thereby in any position to which it may be shifted, and the screw 23 is an additional locking means to hold the section'rigidly locked in its adjusted position. 7
While I have described my presser foot as particularly adapted for use in the forming of a covered seam having overlapped fabric sections, it will be understood of course, that it may be used in connection with covered seams of any character, whether the edges are overlapped or not, and by the shifting of the auxiliary section, sufficient space is provided to accommodate the threads-uniting the fabric sections.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A presser foot for sewing machines in .cluding a supporting shank, a main foot section rigidly carried thereby, an auxiliary foot section, and means for positively shifting said auxiliary section vertically up and down relative to the main foot section to various set positions.
2. A presser foot for sewing machines including a supporting shank, a main foot section rigidly carried thereby, an auxiliary foot section, means for positively shifting said auxiliary section to various set positions vertically relative to the main foot section, and means for positively locking the auxiliary foot section in its adjusted posltions.

A presser foot for sewing machines including a supporting shank, a main section rigidly carried thereby, a yielding auxiliary section spaced from the main section, a shiftable auxiliary section located between the yielding section and the main section of the presser foot, means for shifting said intermediate. section vertically relative to the main foot section, said intermediate section being located in rcar'of the stitchin mechanism, and independent means for locking said intermediate section in its adjusted positions.

A presser foot for sewing machines including a supporting shank, a main foot section carried thereby, said main foot section having a cut away portion, a vertical portion, and an overhanging member, an auxiliary section located in the cut. away portion and having a shank extending alongside of said vertical portion, and projecting plates extending over said overhangmg portion, said projecting plates being spaced, and a screw threaded into said overhanging rtion and having a relatively flat head fitting between the spaced plates for shifting said auxiliary section vertically relative to the main section, said lower plate being slotted to receive the screw, and said upper plate being apertured to provide an opening through which the screw may be reached for turning.
