Be it known that WILLIAM H. NU'I'rER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Kearney, in the county of Buffalo and State of Nebraska, has invented new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Polishing Machines, of which the following is a specication. f

The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient shoe polishing apparatus adapted either for domestic or public use as in shoe polishing parlors or establish- Y ments and 'designed for actuation b-y motor such as an electric motor capable of being actuated by a house service current; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in -the accompanying drawings, wherein:

The device consists essentially -of a rotary head carried by a spindle 11 which is adapted to receive motion through a flexible shaft 12 from a motor indicated at 13 which may be of the electrical type for actuation by an ordinary house service electrical system such as is commonly used for lighting purposes, said flexible shaft being provided with a terminal nipple 14 having a bearing disk 15 between which and the adjacent inner end of the head 1() is. arranged a grip or handle 16 having terminal bearing disks 17 and 18 mounted respectively upon the bearing disk 15 and the inner end of the head l0 by means of anti-friction bearings consisting of the balls 19 or the equivalents thereof. The spindle 11 which carries the head extends through an axial bore 20 of the handle or grip and by reason of the anti-friction bearing of the latter terminally against the nipple at the adjacent end of the flexible shaft and the inner end of the head, it is possible for a hand grasping the grip or handle to direct the position and movements of the head without inface view of the polishing convenience and while maintaining the grip or handle in a xed position or without rotation by the movement of the head. The head consists essentially of a polishing unit 21 consisting of a disk secured to the spindle 11 and a brush unit 22 seated upon the outer side of the polishing unit and also having the spindle 11 extended axially therethrough and secured at its outer end by a nut 23 seated upon a suitable washer 24. For removing or interchanging the brush unit the retaining nut 23 may be disengaged, as for example when a cylinder brush unit 25 such as that indicated in Figure 4 is preferred and which may be used for various purposes as well as for polishing or brushing shoes for which the brush unit 22 is especially designed and to which end said brush unit 22 is of semi-spherical form. To ensure the rotation of the brush unit with the olishing unit the latter may be provided with forwardly projected spurs 26 for engagement with seats 27 in the inner end of the brush unit, the interchangeable brush unit 25 being correspondingly provided with seats 28).

Peripherally the polishing unit is provided `with a rubbing surface or element 29 of felt or equivalent material so that after the use of the brush unit in rubbing shoes the surface of the polishing unit may be applied thereto to secure the desired shine or gloss as an eflicient substitute for the polishing cloths nowordinarily employed in this connection where the polishing is accomplished manually 'instead of mechanically as provided for by the improved mechanism herein disclosed.

With the apparatus described as will'be obvious the brushing and polishing of shoes may be accomplished rapidly and effectively and in addition thereto the brush unit may be used for other purposes such as brushing clothes or fabrics, cleaning draperies vand the like.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A device for the purpose indicated having a rotatable spindle, a grip revolubly mounted on the spindle, a head 'carried by the spindle in abutting relation to the grip and polishing and brush units of which the former consists of a disk having a peripheral rubbing surface, the brush unit being removably seated upon the exterior surface sor of said disk, said brush unit and disk hav- `ing interlocked engaging faces.

2. A device for the purpose indicated comprisinga, rotatable spindle, a head carried by the spindle, a grip rcvolubly mounted upon the spindle and in abuttlng relation to the head, and polishing and brush units carried by the head, the polishing unit comprising a disk having a peripheral rubbing surface and the brush unit being seated on the exterior surface of said disk, one of said units having Vspurs engaging sockets in the other. v
