Be it known that I, Josnrn S. l VA'L'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, California,. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swivel Connections, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in swivel connections and more particularly to an improved swivel connection for use with counter stools and the like.

There is a counter stool in general use in which the seat of the stool is provided with an upwardly extending back, and the seat portion is automatically swung into such position that the back occupies a position at an angle to the counter when the stool is unoccupied. lVhen a person sits on the stool he swings the same around so that he faces the counter and the back of the stool occupies a position substantially parallel to said counter,

The primary object of the present invention is to provide a novel swivel connection for this type of stool.

Another object of the invention is to furnish a swivel connection including a. coiled spring, and means for retaining said spring under tension and preventing distortion of the spring.

Vvith the foregoing objects outlined and with other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing nd more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing:

Figure 1 is a top plan view of the swivel connection embodying the invention.

Fig. 2 is a side view partly in vertical section of the same.

Fig. 3 is a side view on a reduced scale and showing a portion of the stool seat and the supporting collar of the stool.

In the drawing. 1 designates a collar provided with inwardly extending lugs 2 having screw threaded apertures to receive the screws 3, which are used for clamping the collar to the standard or supporting column 4: of the stool. The outer surface of said collar is preferably of cylindrical shape, and resting on the upper end of this collar is a sleeve 5 provided with a depending cyllndrical skirt 6 which slidably engages the outer surface of the collar 1. The collar 1 is provided with an outwardly extending lug 7 which cooperates with a lug 8 depending from the skirt 6, to limit the turning movement of the sleeve 5 on the collar 1.

The sleeve 5 is also provided with inwardly extending lugs 9 provided with screw threaded apertures to accommodate screws 10 employed in clamping the seat 11 to said sleeve; The seat is provided on its underside with the usual reinforcing arms 12 which engage the notches 13 and 14 provided in the? sleeve 5. a

Arranged within the :collar and sleeve is a coiled spring 15 having one of its ends anchored to the sleeve as shownat 16 and having its other endanchored to the collar as at 17. The upper convolution of this spring rests in notches 18 provided on the undersides of the lugs 9, and the lower convolution of the spring rests in notches 19 provided in the upper end of the lugs 2. These notches l8 and 19 function to retain the spring in shape and aid in permitting smooth movement of the sleeve 5 about the collar 1. It is obvious that the spring tends to turn the sleeve 5 in one direction at all times, and in practice it is adapted to turn the sleeve automatically, until the lugs 7 come into engagement. These lugs are shown spaced in the drawing for the purpose of illustration but in actual practice, when the seat 11 is unoccupied these lugs will be in engagement with one another and the back 20 of the seat of the stool will be, in a position at an angle to the counter wit-h which the stool is used.

This swivel connection may be put together so as to make it either a right hand or left hand one. In other words, by placing a right hand spring therein, it will turn back to the right and by placing a left hand spring therein it will turn back to the left.

From the foregoing it is believed that the construction, operation and advantages of the invention may be readily understood and it is apparent that changes may be made in the details disclosedwithout departing from the spirit of the invention as expressed in the claims. I

What is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:

2. A swivel connection as claimed in claim 1 including cooperating lugs for limiting the turning movement of one of said members relatively to the other member.

3. A swivel connection as claimed in claim '1 in which one of said members is provided extending through said apertures.

5. A swivel connection for counter stools comprising a collar provided with internal lugs having notches at their upper ends, a

lug arranged on said collar, screws extending through said collar and adapted to clamp the collar to the upper end of the standard of the counter stool, a sleeve rotatably mounted on said collar and having a depending skirt slidably engaging the outer surface of the collar and provided with a lug adapted to engage the lug of the collar :for limiting the turning movement of the sleeve on said collar, internal lugs provided on said sleeve and having notches in their undersides, a coil spring arranged within the collar and sleeve and having its lower convolution engaging the notches of the internal lugs of said collar, the upper convolution of said spring engaging the notches in the undersides of the internal lugs of said sleeve, clamping screws extending through the internal lugs of the sleeve and adapted to clamp said sleeve to a stool seat and notches provided in said sleeve and adapted to receive reinforcing arms arranged on the bottom of the stool seat.
