Description

fw BY Aunnsva UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MELANoToN BRYANT, or NoRTRPoRT, NEW YORK.
IMPROVM'ENT IN WINDLASSES FOR PRESSES, &c'.
'Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,817, dated February 24, 1874; application filed January 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MELANoToN BRYANT, of Northport, in the county of Suifolk and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Windlasses for Presses, Src., of which the following is a specification The invention will flrst be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a press, showing' the application of my invention to it and Fig. 2 is a section of' Fig. l on the line a: a'.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
.A is the windlass; B, the pawl lever or sweep for turning it by hand to force down the follower C. D is the ratchet-wheel, and E the pawl of the lever for working the wheel. F is the holding or retaining pawl, by which the windlass is retained while the pawl-lever and its pawl are moved back on the ratchetwheel for each new hold. This holding-pawl is constructed in two parts, which are jointed together by a knuckle-joint, G, which closes or folds by rising upward, but is held open by the weight of the pawl, so that when the latter rests on the :ratchet-wheel, the pawl has the function of an ordinary rigid pawl of one piece. Below the pawl is a trip-lever, H, for throwing up the joint to trip the pawl and release the windlass, which is effected by raising the joint Gr a little above the right line between the point I and the joint J of the pawl. Be-
fore tripping the pawl in this manner, the
pawl Eis thrown back, so that it will not hold the ratchet-wheel, and, in order that it may not be struck by the teeth of the wheel and thrown forward again, it is secured by a pin, K.
With the common holding-pawl the Windl'ass cannot be tripped with safety, nor without considera-ble wear upon the points of the teeth and the pawl, by which they are soon ruined, as the one has to slip over the other while ,subject to great pressure; whereas, in this case there is no sliding friction on either part, and the points of the teeth are not at all ex posed to the touch of the pawl, as. the point of the latter drops out of the teeth as soon as the joint of the pawl is thrown up.
A cord and pulley, or any other equivalent device, may be used instead of the hand-lever for tripping the p awl.
The invention is applicable to windlasses for many other purposes besides presses.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the ratchet-Wheel having'grooves D in.y the side, and the lever B having stud-pin K, and loosely pivoted pawl E, of the pivoted detent-pawl, made in two parts and pivoted together, as and for the purpose specified.
MELANCTON BRYANT.
