PAUL E. GERLAT, OF SHEBOYGAN, WISCONSIN.
SHIPPING DEVICE FOR ARTICLES OF CYLINDRICAL SHAPE.
Application filed September 1, 1921. Serial No. 497,497.
To all rm- 10mit may concern:
Be it known that 1, PAUL E. GERLAT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of t iheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shipping Devices for Articles of Cylindrical Shape; and I do hereby declare that the following a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a new and improved device for conveniently securing articles of cylindrical shape into compact bundles for the purpose of shipment. The paper on which newspapers are printed for example, is usually received in large oils which are wound on hollow cylindrical .bre cores. These cores are comparatively exocnsive to make and are charged up to the newspaper company and in order to cut o w m iown the charges it becomes necessary to :etnrn the cores to the paper manufacturer. he cores are quite large and their surface smooth and consequently it has hitherto involvcd considerable time, trouble, and expause to secure them in bundles for shipment in such a manner as to prevent them rom becoming disarranged and damaged roni the rough handling to which ordinary reight is subjected.
The purpose of my invention is to provide a device for securing such articles in bundles at minimum trouble and expense in such manner that they can not become disarranged, no matter how roughly they are handled.
The preferred embodiment of my invention draw is illustrated in the accompanying g, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bundle secured by means of my invention,
thereof 1e co ure 2 line Figure brackets tion.
In carr in -Jrackets 5 a a p art being broken away to show better motion of the invention.
is a cross sectional view on the f Figure 1, and
is a detail view of one of the constituting a part of my invenout the invention a pair of d 6 are provided which are adapted to engage the ends of the hollow cylindrical bodies 8 and these brackets are provided with prongs 7 which extend into the ends of the cores, engaging the inner walls thereof to hold the same in compact and symmetrical arrangement. The brackets are provided with central orifices 9 which are adapted to receive a headed rod or elongated bolt 10 which is provided with a nut 11 for drawing up the brackets into close engagement with the ends of the cores, thus securing the bundle firmly so that there is no possibility of its becoming disarranged.
While I have shown my invention in aform which is adapted to secure six cores in the relation shown most clearly in Figure 2, it will be readily understood that the brackets may be provided with additional prongs symmetrically arranged so as to form a larger bundle of any number of cores desired.
prongs extending therefrom and arranged in concentric circles, the prongs of an inner circle being adapted to hold a plurality of rolls in juxtaposed position, the prongs of the outer circle being adapted to hold other rolls in engagement with the first-named rolls, each of said brackets having a central aperture, l a rod adapted to be inserted thru the said apertures, and means for drawing up the brackets into engagement with the ends of the cylinders with the prongs extending into said ends and engaging the walls thereof to hold the cylinders in a compact symmetrical bundle.
in testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Sheboygan, inthe county of Sheboygan and State of l/Visconsin.
