COOKER.
Original application filed November 20, 1922, Serial No. 602,080. Divided and Serial No. 650,374.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD J. PUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cookers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in cookers and has relation more particularly to a device of this general. character especially designed and adapted for ues in connection with the canning industry and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character comprising a box through which a conveyor is adapted to travel togcther with means within the box to effect the desired cooking operation.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved cooker whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be; the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating a cooker constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a cross sectional View taken through the device as illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in top plan of the structure as illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in perspective illustrating the screen element arranged within the box.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, B denotes a box or housing of predetermined dimensions and which is supported at a desired elevation. Travelling along and within the lower portion of the box B is the upper stretch of an endless conveyor C travelling in a direction indicated by the arrow a. The conveyor C is this application'filed July 9,
adapted to be driven in any desired manner but preferably in accordance with the structure disclosed in my pending application Serial No. 602,080 filed November 20, 1922 of which the present application is a division.
Arranged within th box B is a screen 67 through which the conveyor C is directed, said screen having depending side walls 68 terminating in the flanges 69 disposed on a downward and inward incline. The side walls 68 are imperforate while the top wall of the screen 67 is provided with minute openings 70.
The screen 67 when applied extends substantially the entire length of the box B and has its side walls 68 spaced from the side walls of the box B with the top of the screen also spaced from the top of the box B. When the screen 67 is applied and the device adapted to be used as a cooker, the bottom of the box has a supply of water placed therein the level of which terminates above the pipes 66 and preferably about two inches. As is illustrated in Figures 2 and 4 it is to be noted that the side pipes 66 are arranged outwardly of the screen 67 and between the side walls 68 of the screen and the adjacent side walls of the box. The steam discharging from the side pipes 66 and the water brought to a boiling point the force of velocity of the steam discharged from these pipes will force the water up the sides 68 and over and across the top of the screen 67 resulting in a hot water spray over the cans as they pass through on the conveyor C.
Certain of the pipes 66 underlie the conveyor C and serve mainly for heating the Water although the jets discharged from these last named pipes result in a slight raising of the adjacent portion of the water to meet the spray that is delivered down wardly from the screen. The flanges 69 pro vide means to facilitate the creation of the requisite suction to carry the water up wardly of the sides 68 of the screen 67. In order that the water may be properly arranged within the box B I provide said box with transversely disposed walls 71 positioned adjacent the receiving and delivery I runways.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a cooker constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit 7 above the conveyor being perforated, said screen bein provided with imperforate walls extending below the conveyor, and steam pipes arran'ged within the box below the conveyor and at opposite sides of the 2. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a box, a conveyor travelling therethrough, a screen disposed over the conveyor, a portion of the screen above the conveyor being perforated. said screen being provided with imperiiorate walls extending below the conveyor, and steam pipes arranged within the box below the conveyor and at opposite sides of the screen, said pipes emitting upwardly directed jets.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a box, a conveyor travelling therethrough, a screen disposed over the conveyor, a portion of the screen above the conveyor beingperforated, said screen being provided with impertorate walls extending below the conveyor, and steam pipes arranged within the box below the conveyor and at opposite sides of the screen, said pipes emitting upwardly directed jets, the lower portion of the side walls of the screen being continued by inwardly and downwardly inclined flanges.
In testimony whereof I hereunto a'liix my signature.
CLIFFORD J. PUGH.
