Description

STATES PATNT FFIC.
JNO. B. EVINS, OF GREENOAS'ILE, INDIANA.
SHINGLELMACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,765, dated April 29, 1856.
To all lwhom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN B. EviNs, of Greencastle, in the county of Putnam and State 'of Indiana, have invented a new and p Improved Machine for Cutting Shingles;
and I do hereby declare that the following 1s a full, clear, and exactl description of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, in making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a front view of my improvement. Fig. 2, is a transverse vertical section of the same, the plane being through the center.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists in the peculiar manner of operating the knife-gate or frame, as will be presently shown and described.
To enable others skilled in the art, to fully understand and const-ruct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a rectangular framing constructed in any proper manner, and having two posts B, B, attached to its front side, one at each end, said posts having each an inclined slot (a) cut through its upper end.
C, represents a knife frame through the upper part of which bolts (b) (b) pass, one at each side. These bolts are fitted in the inclined slots (a) (a) in the posts B, B.
D, represents a rectangular frame or sash, the sides of which are fitted in grooves in the inner sides of the posts B, B. The lowerpart of the knife frame C, is attached to the lower part of the frame or sash D, by a bolt or pivot (c). The frame or sash D, has a panel E, fitted within it in the usual or any proper manner so that said panel may be adjusted to correspond to the taper form in which the shingles are to be out.
F, represents a knife which is secured to the upper part of the knife frame C, and G, represents a bed block which is secured on the upper part of the framing A, directly back of the knife F.
H, represents a pitman, the upper end of which is attached to about the center of the knife frame C, by a pivot or bolt (d). The lower end of the pitman is attached by a pivot or bolt (e) to the lower part of a circular plate I, on the inner end of a lever J, as clearly shown in Fig. l.
K, K, represents two levers, the inner ends 0f which are attached by pivots or bolts (f), (f) to the circular plate I, a lever K, being attached to the circular plate at each side of the point of attachment of the pitman H. The outer ends of the levers K, K, are attached by pivots or bolts (g) to the framing A. The lever K, is allowed to work or play to a certain extent on its outer pivot (g).
Operation: The block from which the shingles are cut shown in red, is placed upon the bed block G, and by depressing the outer end of the lever J, by hand the knife F, is brought down over the edge of the blocks with a drawing cut in consequence of the bolts (b) (Zi) fitting in the slots (a) (a), which give an oblique motion to the knife frame, and cause the knife to cut diagonally with the grain of the wood. The panel E, of course rises and falls with the knife frame C, as they are connected by t-he pivot or bolt (c) and the knife frame oscillates or works on this bolt. The panel performs the same office as in other analogous machines; viz: insures an even or regular width to the shingles as it bears or works over the edge of the block, and prevents the shingle while.
being cut from following the grain of the wood. The panel E, works vertically as the frame D, is fitted in upright guides or grooves.
By having the lever J, provided with two fulcrums connected as shown to the levers K, K, the power applied advantageously to the machine, and a sufficient length of stroke or vibration is given the knife with a considerable leverage power.
I do not claim the reciprocatingknife and panel, for they have been previously used for the same purpose, but
What I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. I claim the combination of the knife frame C, and panel frame D, when constructed, arranged and operating conjointly as herein shown and described.
2. I claim operating the knife and panel frames C, D, by means of the lever J, when connected to the two levers K, K', as shown, so that two movable fulcrums are obtained, the pitman being attached to the lever between the fulcrums for the purpose specified. 1
