ENOOH OHNSTRAND, OF MOHAWK, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR T LIBRARY BUREAU, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CABINET CLOSURE Application filed April 12, 1922. Serial No. 551,958.
To all whom it may concem: having struck up marginal portions form- Be it known that I; ENooH OHNSTRAND, ing flanges 6 and adapted to be fastened to a citizen of the United States of America, the. front of face plate 4 by meansof nuts and resident of Mohawk, in the county of 7 upon the bolt ends 8 of the drawer handle 5 Herkimer and State of New York, have in- 9 which, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is loop- 60 vented new and useful Improvements in shaped or U-shaped. Plate 5, as shown in Cabinet Closures, of which the following. is Fig. 3, occupies but a portion of the space a specification. between the front face 4 and the rear plate This invention relates to cabinet closures 10 of the drawer head. This rear plate, has 10 and more particularly to cabinets, such as flanged portions 11 forced beneath or behind 65 filing cabinets, of the type havinga sliding the flanges 12 and 13 upon face plate 4, tray or drawer movable into and out of flanges 12 being formed by bending over the housed position within the cabinet. marginal portions of face plate 4 into par- When such a cabinet is moved it occasionallel relation therewith. The flanges 13 at ally happens that a drawer accidentally the bottom of face plate 4 are inclined in 70 comes open, and for use on shipboard means 'wardly as shown in Fig. 3. must be provided to prevent the drawers The latching mechanism comprises a bolt from sliding open when the vessel pitches 14 mounted for sliding movement upon the or rolls. plate 5 by the provision of a struck up loop Objects of the invention are to prevent the 15 thereon, and a. slot 16 in lower flange 6. 7 accidental opening of cabinets of the class Pivoted to bolt 14 by means of a pin 17 is a described, to conceal the actuator for the bell crank lever 18 pivoted at 19 to plate 5 latching mechanism in order that the apand having an integral actuator portion 20 pearance of the cabinets may not be marred extending through slots 21 in plates 4 and 2 thereby, to arrange the actuatorso that it is 5 so positioned that the actuator is within 80 operated in grasping the cabinet handle in the loop or curve of the handle 9 at the left the usual way, to provide a latching mechaside thereof as shown in Fig. 1. Lever 18 nism which is simple in construction and may have a washer 22 thereon adjacent the may be readily installed, and in general to point where it is bent to form the actuator improve devices of the class described. 20. Pivot 19 which is fast in plate 5 hasa,85
For the purpose of illustrating the invenspacer 23 to compensate for the thickness of tion one concrete embodiment thereof is washer 22. In order normally to hold the shown in the accompanying drawing, in bOlll) 14 in operative ition to engage a which suitable recess in sill of the cabinet, a coil 3 Figure 1 is a plan view; spring 24 is provided attached at one end to 90 Figure 2'is a rear elevational view of the the lower arm of bell crank lever18 and at drawer head; and the other end fast to a projection 26 on plate Figure 3 is a vertical section substantially 5. This projection may take the form of a on the line 3'3 of Fig. 2 but showing porstruckv up portion of the plate as shown in 40 tions of the cabinet of which the drawer Figs. 2 and 3. I forms a closure in dotted outline. In assembling the device, the bolt 14 is The embodiment of the invention shown first slipped under loop 15 until the hole in tor the purpose of illustration comprises a which pivot 17 is made fast is above a hole cabinet closure in the form of a filing drawer a in plate 5 through which a suitable tool having a head A, sides B, back C, bottom D, may pass to securely rivet loop 15 in place 100 follower E, rod F for holding guides in the in bolt 14. Plate 5 is then placed in juxtadrawer, and an index holder G. As shown, position to face plate 4 with slots 21 in reg-' the drawer is of conventional appearance. istry. Bell crank lever 18 is then inserted The mechanism by which the cabinet clothrough the slots 21 from the outer side of sure is retained within the cabinet, the sills plate 4 and washer 22 is slipped thereover. 105 of which areshown in dotted outline in Fig. If difliculty 'is experienced in setting bell 3, is mounted upon the inner side of the face crank'18, the bend therein adjacent the acplate 4 of the drawer head A and is shown tuator or trigger 20 may be made after the in elevation in Fig. 2 and in section in Fig." crank is inserted through the slots. The 3. This mechanism is mounted'upon a plate bell crank is then made fast upon pivot 19 110 and connected to bolt 14 by pin 17; spring 24 is applied. Handle 9 is fast to the outer face the plate 4 at any time after lever 18 is inserted, the securing nuts 7 for the handle clamping the plate which supports the latching mechanism securely on faceplate 4. Back 10 is then made fast to the drawer head and the rest of the drawer is made fast to the head. The lower edge of plate 10 cooperates with loop and slot 16 in flange 6 to guide bolt 14 in its reciprocation.
From the above it will be clear that the latching device consistsof two parts, may be cheaply constructed and assembled and, is very effective for the purpose desired. The actuator 20 being positioned Within loop handle 9 is almost entirely conwhen the handle is oealed and does not detract-from the appearance of the drawer head. Moreover its position is such that it is readily operated grasped, the particular form of actuator shown being adapted to be operated by pressing upon or squeezing the handle with the thumb and forefinger I claim a 1. A cabinet closure having a face plate, a back plate, a 100 handle on -said face plate, latching mec anism mounted between said plates comprising a bolt, a bell crank having one arm pivotally attached to said bolt and the other arm having a portion extending through a slot in said face plate to the exterior thereof within said loop handle to form an actuator for ,operating said bolt when said handleis -grasped.
2. A cabinet closure having a loop handle 'on the front thereof, a plate on the back of said closure, fastening means for the handle arranged securely to support said I plate, a. latch mechanism assembled upon said plate, and an actuator integral with vone of the elements of said latch mechanism extendin through slots in said plate and closure and disposed withinsaid loop handle.
3. A drawer for cabinets and the like having a head, a loop handle on one side of said head, a latch mechanism assembled on a plate and fast as a unit upon the other side of said head, one element ofesaid latch mechanism having .a part extending through a slot in said head to a positionwithin said handle to serve mechanism.
4. A drawer for cabinets and the like having a head provided with a back spaced from said head, a latch mechanism mounted upon a plate for insertion as a unit in the space between said back and said head, a loop handle on said head, and a latch actuator within said loop handle and operatively connected to said latch mechanism.
5. A drawer for cabinets or the like having a head comprising a face plate and a back plate in spaced relation, aloop handle upon the exterior of said face plate, fastening means for said handle serving to securely hold a third plate in the space be tween said face and back plates, latching mechanism on said third plate comprising a reciprocable bolt and a member for actuating the latter, said member having a portion extending to theexterior of said face plate adjacent said handle in position to be actuated when said handle is grasped.
6. A drawer for cabinets and the like having a face plate, a loop handle on the exterior thereof, fastening means for said handle serving to securely hold a flanged plate upon the inner side of said face plate, guide means on said flanged plate including a loop thereon and a slot in one of the flanges thereof, a bolt reciprocable in said guides, a bell crank lever for actuating said bolt, means normally retaining said bolt in extended position,'and an actuator within the loop of said handle operatively connected to said bell crank for retracting said bolt when said handle is grasped.
