The cylinder 18 is provided with a piston 19 which is connected by a piston rod 2O to one end of an actuating lever 21 which iS pivotally mounted upon a bracket 22 upon the tankf and is operated by ya cord 23 or any other suitable means. The horizontal pipe 10 desirablyis provided with a suitable valve which is located beyond the pump cylinder 18. l t
In the preferred. construction illustrated herein the end of the horizontal section is provided with avvalve seat 24 which, as illustrated herein,is in th'eform of a bushing having on'its vouter end a flap valve seat preferably slightly inclined 'from the vertical. A iiap valve, 25 is pivotally connected Y by a suitable hinge 26 to the valve seatand 1 siphon will breakthe siphonic action. Thev normally is held by the influence of gravity against the valve seat.
In the operation of the device the ballcock is set to maintainthe liquid inthe tank at a predetermined level 27 which is slightly below the crest 9 of the lower wall of thev inverted Uv-shaped conduit which connects the legs 6 and of the'siphon. If the level ofthe liquid rises above thecrest 9, liquid willflow by gravity to the siphon without producing siphonic action so that the level of the liquid in the tank will neve-r rise beyond thesiphon and inasmuch as the siphon is located below 'the top of the tank all danger of overflow ofthe tank is prevented.
When it is desired to discharge the contents of the tank the actuating lever 21 'is operated by pulling upon the cord 23. This causes the piston Y19 to be raised within the cylinder thus creating a partial vacuum in the discharge leg of the siphon so that the pressure of the air `upon the surface of the liquid will cause it to l flow through the siphonv and initiate the siphonic action. As soon as the siphonic action is commenced the actuating lever may be released and the suction of the-water will cause the piston to be drawn back to its original position. The liquid will then flow through the siphon until the level of therliquid reaches the lower end of the intake leg of lthe'siphon whereby entrance ofair intoA the intake arm of the tank may then be refilled.`
Preferably a check valve, such as that above I described, is provided in the discharge conduit beyond the pump so that it willbe only necessary to create a partial vacuum in the short section of the discharge pipe and the siphonto initiate the siphonic action. However, the presence of lsuch a valve is not absolutely essential if the dispump lfrom the presence of acids, alkali,
or other impurities in the liquid. l
It will also be noted that the siphon .is normally iilled with air and also operates to discharge liquid after the siphonic action is initiated and until the lower end of the siphon is exposed to the air by the lowering l of the liquid level.
It will be understood that the embodiment of the invention disclosed herein is` of an illustrative character and is not restrictive; and, that various modifications in construew tion and arrangement of parts may be made within the spirit and scope of the following claims. v
Having thus described my invention, what Y l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A flushA tank construction comprising a tank, a liquid supply, means for maintaining the liquid at a normal predetermined level in said tank, a siphon having its intake leg extending into said tank below saidfnormal liquid level, a dry pump comprising a cylinder connected to the delivery leg of said siphon and a piston reciprocable in said i cylinder operable to create a partial vacuum in said siphon and therebyV to vinitiate siphonic actionand a check valve located beyond said pump adapted to be closed by the suction action of said pump.
2. A non-leakable flush tank construction comprising a tank, a liquid supply, means for normally maintaining the liquid at a predetermined level in said tank, a siphon in said tank'having its intake leg extending below the normal level crest of the siphon slightly above saidliquid level, adischarge pipe having a horizontal section connected to the outlet-leg, a dry of theV liquid and the crest of the siphon slightly above said liquid pump comprising a cylinder communicating with said horizontal conduit, a piston reciprocable in said cylinder, means for actuating said piston and a normally seated valve at the discharge'end of the horizontal section of said discharge pipe adapted to'be tightly closed by the suction of said pump and thereby to facilitate the initiation of the siphonic action.
