WILLIAM E. HENRY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOIB, TO THE AMERICAN HARDWARE CQRPGRATION', OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
DOOR CLOSER.
Application filed November 11, 1922. Serial No. 800,259.
To all whom-it may cancer "n:
Be'it known that I, WILLIAM K. HENRY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Door Closers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to door closers, and has for its object to provide a novel and improved door closer which is simple, strong and durable in construction and reliable in operation.
The several features of the invention will be clearly understood from the following description and accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a plan view of a door closer of the usual check type embodying the features of the invention in their preferred form, the door check being shown applied to a swinging door and a door case, the door being closed and the door case being sho'wn in section;
Fig. 2 is a similar view but with the door' shown open; v
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same; Fi 4 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 5; and
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
The door closer illustrated in the drawings is shown applied to a swinging door 2 and a door case 4:. The door closer comprises a casing-6 which is secured to the door. The casin 6 is of a common construction and contains a helical spring (not shown) which is adapted to be put under increased ten sion as the door opens. The spring is held under proper tension by means of a looking disk 10 at the upper end of a shaft 8, and a pawl 12 carried by an arm 14 mounted on the shaft 8, which pawl is adapted to engage one of the notches 15 in the periphery of the disk. The actuatlng arm 14 is secured at one end to the upper end of the shaft 8 above the locking disk 10, and its free end is'connected by a longitudinally adjustable link 16 with the door case. With this construction upon opening the door the spring actuated arm 14 will tend to close the door and to hold the door closed 1n the usual manner.
In the illustrated construction novel and improved means is provided for holding the door open'when it is fully opened or o ened to a predetermined degree. To provide for this a chamber 18 is ormed on. the under side of the arm 14 that extends longitudinally of the arm. The end portion of the lnter or of the chamber 18, 'directel toward the axis of the shaft 8, is reduced in diameter to provide a bearin for a slidable plunger detent 20. An antl-friction roll 22 1s mounted on the outer end of the detent 20 which is adapted to engage a cooperatin'g locking recess or notch 24 in a projection 26 on the casin 6 when the door is swung open. The etent 20 is provided with a head 28 that cooperates with a shoulder 30 on the interior of the chamber 18 to limit the extent of'the outward movement of the detent. The head 28 is U-shaped and the interior of the chamber 18 back of the shoulder 30 is of a corresponding irregular shape so as to cooperate therew1th to prevent the detent from turning, which insures the roll 22 being held in proper angular position at all times so as to enable it to properly engage the notch in the projection 26. This portion of the interior of U-shaped throughout its length and an ad'- the outer end of this U-shaped portion, the latter being of pro er dimensions to enable this to be done. coiled spring 34 is interposed between thescrew plug 32 and the detent 20. I
With this construction it will be apparent that the tension of the detent spring 34 may be so adjusted by means of the screw plu 32 and that upon opening the door the antifriction roll will ride smoothly and easily upon the side of the projection 26 and enter the recess or notch therein, whereupon the door will be firmly but yieldingly held from movement in either direction, and that uponthe application of a sufiicient closing force on the door, the roll will ride smoothly and easily out of its recess so as to permit the door closer to act.
As will be evident to those skilled in the art my invention permits of various modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A door closer having, in combination, a casing for attachment to the door, a spring actuated arm movable horizontally about the chamber 18 back of the shoulder 30 is a the vertical axis of said casing and having a longitudinally extending chamber on its under side, a link pivotally connected with said arm for connecting said arm to the door case, a slidable detent mounted in said chamber arranged to engage an abutment on the casing when the door is opened, an adjustable abutment screw-threaded in the outer end of said chamber, and a coiled spring interposed between said detent and said adjustable abutment.
2. A door closer having, in combination, a casing for attachment to the door and having a portion provided with a notch, a spring actuated arm movable horizontally about the vertical axis of said casing and having a longitudinally extending chamber on its underside, means comprising a link for connecting said arm with the door case, a slidable detent mounted in said chamber having one end projectin beyond the end thereof, an anti-friction roll mounted on said end of the detent arranged to be received in said notch when the door is opened, said chamber and detent having cooperating portions for limitin the extent of the outward movement of said detent'and for holding the detent from rotation, an adjustable abutment screw-threaded into the other end of said chamber, and a coiled spring interposed between said adjustable abutment and said detent.
3. A door closer having in combination, a casing for attachment to the door and having a portion provided with a notch, a spring actuated arm movable horizontally about the vertical axis of said casing and having a longitudinally extending chamber on its under side, said chamber having an irregularly shaped cross section, means comprising a link for connecting said arm to the door case, a slidable detent mounted in said chamber and having a head of irregular con-- tour substantially fitting said chamber so on its under side, means comprising a link connecting said arm to the door case, a slidable detent mounted insaid chamber and arranged to engage an abutment on the easing when the door is open and having a head substantially'U-shaped in contour, said chamber having a reduced portion serving as a bearing for said detent and having its remaining portion U-shaped in cross section and substantially fitting the head of the detent so as to permit longitudinal movement of the detent but holding it from rotation, an adjustable-abutment screw threaded into the end of the said U-shaped portion of said chamber, and a coiled spring interposed between said abutment and said detent.
