SAFETY MECEANZSBZ EQKVER-OEEEATED DOORS.
Application filed August 27, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, PARIS R. FORMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rahway, county of Union, State of New 6 Jersey, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Safety Mechanism for Power- Operated Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safety devices 10 for power operated doors.
The object of the invention is to provide means to permit a door of a car to be opened only when the brakes are applied.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the'controlling device for controlling a door operating motor is maintained in initial position corresponding to the closed position of the door until the car brake mechanism has been actuated.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined car brake operating mechanism and door actuating motor control mechanism which is simple in construction and eflicient in operation to prevent the 2 opening of the door in advance of an application of the brakes or during the time the brakes are released.
Other objects of the invention will appear more fully hereinafter.
The invention consists substantially in the construction, combination, location, and arrangement of parts, as shown in the accompanying drawing, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and finally pointed out in the appended claims.
The single view of the drawing is a view in diagrammatic plan showing the combined brake applying and safety locking mechanism for a door operating motor embodying the principles of my invention.
In carrying out my invention I propose to provide means actuated coincidently with the application of the brake mechanism of a street, railway, surface, subway or elevated car for releasing the control mechanism which controls the car door operating motor. 7
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a door operating motor, which may be of the usual or any suitable or convenient type. 2 designates the controller for controlling the operation of the door operating motor. The controller 2 is actuated by means of a suitable connection indicated in this instance as a connection 3, which may be a Serial my 496,060.
rod, or other suitable form, which may be controlled from any suitable or convenient point. in the specific embodiment'of my invention a collar f is fixed upon the connection 3. This collar is engaged by an arm or member 5 connected to the rod 6 of a piston 7 operating in a cylinder 8. A spring 9 arranged in the cylinder 8 serves normally to maintain the piston 7 at one limit of its movement and in position for the arm 5 to engage the collar 42 to hold the motor con trol connection 6 in a normal or initial position. This position will ordinarily be such as to conform to the closed position of the door which the motor is intended to operate. When in this normal or initial position the control connection 3 cannot be actuated to operate the motor controller 2 until the niston 7'is displaced within the cylinder 8 against the action of spring 9. In order to effect the release of the motor controller I propose to combine the detent or retaining device or arm 5 and its operating piston with the brake mechanism of the car in such manner that when the brakes are applied. the detent or retaining device 5 is released from its detenting or retaining position with reference to themotor control connection 3. I have shown a simple arrangement for accomplishing this wherein the train line pipe 10 which supplies operating medium to the'brake applying cylinder 11 is also in communication through a suitable pipe connection 12, with the end of the safety lock cylinder 8 so that when pressure medium is supplied to the brake cylinder 11 to effect an operation of the brake applying piston 13 therein, the operating medium likewise will be supplied to the cylinder 8 to cause the piston 7 therein to be displaced against the action of spring 9, thereby releasing the detent 5 from engaging relation with respect to the motor control connection 3. Thereafter the motor control connection 3 is free to be operated so as to effect the actuation of the motor and the opening of the door. Thus it will be seen that'as soon as the brake application is made the piston in the locking cylinder is displaced, and hence the door can be opened by the proper manipulation of the motor control connection 3. Hence, an applicationof the brakes is insured before the door can be opened. It will also be seen that if a door is in an open position, that is, if the door operating motor controller has been actuated to eflfeet an opening of the door and the brake pres sure is released, then the motor controller will be automatically actuated into position to efiect a closing of the door.
From the foregoing description it will be seen thatl provide an exceedingly simple safety device to insure against accident and possible injury to persons boarding and alighting from cars by preventing the door :from being opened until after'the car brakes have been applied, and, in additiomT am dently with the actuation of the car brake mechanism for controlling said controller actuating means.
2. A door operating motor and its controller, actuating means for said controller,
of a detent operating to maintain the controller in position corresponding to the closed position of the door, a brake mechanism, and means operating coincidently with the application of the brake mechanism for releasing said detent.
3. The combination with a door operating motor and its controller, means for operating said controller, of a detent normally operating to maintain the controller in position corresponding to the closed position of the door, a car brake mechanism, and means operating coincidently with the car brake mechanism for releasing said detent.
4E. The combination with a motor and its controller, actuating means for the controller, of a cylinder, a piston operating in said cylinder, a spring to resist the operation of said piston, connections between said piston and the controller operating means, a brake cylinder, a pipe line communicating therewith, and a pipe connection from said pipe line to said first mentioned cylinder.
5. The combination with a door operating motor and its controller, and a car brake mechanism, of means operating coincidently with the application of the car brake mechanism to permit the motor controller to be operated.
6. The combination with a door operating motor and its controller, and a car. brake mechanism, of means operating coincidently with the release of the brake mechanism for actuating the motor controller to door closed position.
7. The combination with a door operating motor and a car brake mechanism, and
means for locking said motor in its door closed positlon when sald brake mechanism is in released position. 7
8. The combination with a door operating motor and means for locking said motor, a car brake mechanism and means for controlling said motor locking means from said brake mechanism.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand on this 18th day of August, A. D. 1921.
