This clip is U-shaped as best shown in Fig. 8 and is provided with the central aperture 9 for the reception of the rivet 5 by meansi'of which the clip may be attached to the lower leaf of the spring. rllhe rms 10 of the clip extend upwardly above the top leaf ofthe sprincr as best shown in Fig. 1. The bending d1es 11 are slidably mounted upon the top of the base l'and are provided with the V-shaped grooves-12 arranged to slide upon the V-'shaped guide-ways 13 of the guides 14,' which guides are attached upon opposite sides oi the base as by the bolts 15. Each of the bending dies is provided with the' inwardly disposed, reduced portion 16 arranged to engage the free extremities of the arms 10 of the clip, as will be later described.
The base is provided at each end with the upright portions 17 having the bores 18 extending from the outer side to a point vnear the inner side' thereof, said bores communi eating with, and being in alignment with the reduced bores 19. -Rods 20'are carried by the bending dies, and extend outwardly through the bores 18 and 19, a coil spring 21 being located around each of said rods, being interposed between the shoulder 22 vandsthe head 23 ofthe rod.
It'. will, of course, be understood` that the base is mounted in any suitable type of press, the presser head 24 being arranged to be moved vertically with reference thereto. The depending cams 25 are l0- cated near the opposite ends of the presser head 24 and arranged to operate the bending dies, moving the same inwardly against the pressure of the springs 21.
Apertures 26 are provided in the base 1 to receive said cams when the presser head is' lowered. 'Each of these cams is provided, at its lower end' with the reduced, tapered por tion 27 normally engaging the outer end of the adjacent bending die, the enlargedup per portion of each cam having'the vertical face 28 and the downwardlyw and outwardly curved "surface 29 which communicates with the tapered portion 27. v l y The clinching diel 30 depends from the central portion of the presser head and is considerably shorter than the cams 25. This clincher die is arranged to engage the eX- tremities of the arms of the clip and clinch the same tightly Vupon the spring, after the bending dies have bent said eX- tremities of the arms over the top of `the spring.
' In operation, aA clip is attached to the lower leaf of a spring by means of a rivet and the spring 'is placed in-the device in the position shown in Fig. 1, the clip resting upon the anvil, the head of the rivet extending into the socket 4 of the anvil, the free ends of the arms 10 of the clip extending upwardly beyond the top of the spring.
The presser head is then moved downwardly by any usual means, the tapered lower portions 27 of the cams 25 starting to move the bending dies 11 inwardly and as the curved portions 29 of said cams engage the bending dies, the same are moved quickly inwardly into the position shown in Fig. 2, bending theextremities of the armsof the clip toward each other as'shown in said fig.
