To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLE Moire, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Duluth, in the county of St. Louis andState y of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in carrdoors especially designed for use upon grain or coal cars or the like and has for an object the provision of a door of simple construction, which may be applied to the type of cars now in use.
Another object of the invention is the plO- vision of a door of this character which includes a main door and a supplemental door, the latter being capable of independent opening so as to first release the pressure upon the door from within the car and to 0 direct the contents of the car to a central point, to facilitate unloading and prevent waste. 7
Another object of the invention is the provision of a structure as above stated, which includes a pair of maindoors, each of which carries a supplemental door, together with novel means for holding either both or one of the main or supplemental doors in closed position.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features'and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illus trated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, he reference character 10 indicates a portion of a box car,
the door opening of which is indicated at 11. The car is shown as provided upon its inner walls with the usual sheathing 12, while the stringer or sill which also forms the sill of the doorway is indicated at 13.
The invention includes a pair of oppositely and laterally movable doors, each of which comprises a main door 14: and a supplemental door 15, the last mentioned door being of triangular formation and being hingedly secured along its hypothenuse to the lower inclined edge of the main door as shown at 16. One of the main doors 14 is provided alon its outer and lower edge with a flange 1? which overlaps the adjacent wall of the other main door and extends along the line of the hinge 16 which serves to secure the supplemental door to the main door. The other main door 14 is provided with a flange 18 which overlaps the hinge joint of its particular supplemental door. One of the supplemental doors carries a flange 19 which extends along its vertical edge for overlapping engagement with the opposite supplemental door;
Each of the main doors 14 is pivotally secured at its inner lower corner to a hinge block 20, so as to permit the main door and the supplemental door attached thereto to be swung laterally of the doorway within the car, as indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 2 of the drawings. For the purpose of guiding the doors in this swinging movement, each of the main doors carries an extension 21 Within which operates a latch 22, the latter being forced outwardly by the action of the spring 23 and retracted or drawn inwardly through the medium of a chain or similar element 2 This latch is adapted for engagement with any one of a series of spaced openings 25 provided in an arcuate guide 26 secured along the inner side wall of the car adjacent the door open ing 11. These arcuate guides are substantially Z-shaped in cross section and act together with the side wall of the car to de fine a groove for the passage of the extensions 21 of the main doors 14. The latches 22 act to hold the doors in closed position or in the position shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing and they also hold the doors in fully open position, or partly open as desired.
The main doors'l are provided along their meeting edges with right angularly extending'flanges 27 and pivotally secured to an ear located upon the face of one of the main doors 1": is a latch 28 which extends through the flanges 27 of both doors. This latch acts to bridge the joint between the main doors and prevent them from bulging outward. The latch is held against accidental disengagement through the medium oi a cam lever 29. which is pivotally mounted upon one of the main doors 14: so as to engage the free end of the latch 28.
The supplemental doors 15 are capable of being swung upward upon their hinges to the position shown by the dotted lines in Figure 1 so as to initially release the grain and relieve pressure upon the inside of the doors. To hold these supplemental doors in raised position, each of the main doors is provided with a transversely extending rib of flange 30 which not only acts to strengthen the main doors but also provides means for slidingly mounting a bolt 31. This bolt is also slidable within'a guide 32 carried by the main door and its downward movement is limited by a pin or stop 33. When the supplemental door is raised the lower end of the bolt is adapted to engage over the edge of the supplemental door to hold it in raised position. The bolt 31 is provided with a handle or knob 84 for convenience of manipulation.
F or the purpose of locking the supplemental doors together when the'latter are in closed position, there is provided a lock lever 35 which is pivotally mounted as at 36 upon one of the supplemental doors 15. This lever is provided with a tongue 37 which is arranged to pass through openings 38 provided in flanges 39 extending along the meetingedges of the supplemental doors. A pivoted dog e0 which engages a notch ell formed in the lever 35 serves to hold the latter against pivotal movement when the locking lever is engaged in looking position.
Slidingly mounted upon oneof the supplemental doors 15 is a locking bolt-42, which is movable in a guide 43 carried by the supplemental door and is adapted to have its lower end engaged in a socket or keeper l4 located within the sill 13. The bolt 42 is provided with a recess 45 within which extends a cam member 46 carried by the lever 35. This cam member 46 is disengaged from the bolt 42 when the latter is in locked position and the tongue 37 is engaged in both of the openings 38, as illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings. In this position the dog 40 is engaged in the notch 41 so as to hold the lever 35 against accidental movement. To release one of the supplemental doors 1 5,
the lever 35 is moved to the position shown permit of the opening of both of the doors.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in lts form, proportions and minor details of construction and the rlght 1s herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the app-ended claim. Having described the invention what is claimed is A door comprising a pair of main doors, a supplemental door of triangular forma tion hingedly secured along its hypothenuse to the lower corner of each of the main doors, a flange formed on the meeting edges of all the doors and the meeting flanges of the supplemental doors being provided With openings adapted to be aligned when the doors are closed, means for pivotally' securing the opposite lower corners of each of the main doors to a support, a bolt slidingly mounted upon one of the supplemental doors and engagea'ble with the sill'of the door opening, a lever pivotally secured to the bolt carrying door, a tongue carried by the lever for engagement with the openings when the bolt is in locking position a cam member carried by the leverfor disengaging the bolt from the sill when the tongue is disengaged from the supplemental doors, a pivoted dog secured to the bolt carrying door for engagmg a recess in the lever for retaimng'the lever .in a locked position, and said lever being provided with a recess arranged below the first mentioned recess to retain the lever in a position to lock the bolt carrying door only. i
