CABINET.
Application filed October 7, 1922. Serial No. 593,007.
To all whom it may concern." I
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. Hnss, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Grange Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates, more particularly, to cabinets which are installed at openings in the walls of rooms in certain buildings, as for example hotels, apartment buildings, etc. In such buildings the upwardly extending pipes through which steam, water, etc., pass to the several floors of the building are commonly located within the walls of the latter and are provided with valves rela tively closely grouped together and also located within the walls and in registration with openings therein, these valves controlling the flow through the several pipes to the various rooms, it being desirable that these pipes and valves be concealed from view, while permitting of ready access to the valves for manipulation thereof, as conditions may require.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a novel, simple, and inexpensive construction of wall cabinet which may be positioned on the wall at the opening therein at which the valves are located and which may be readily conditioned to render the valves opposite to which it extends accessible for manipulation.
Referring to the accompanying I drawmgsz- Figure 1 is a face view of the inner side of the wall of a room containing an opening with which valves, as above referred to, reg-ister, this opening being shown as equipped with a cabinet embodying my invention, certain portions of the cabinet being broken away to disclose interior details.
Figure 2 is a plan sectional view of the construction shown in Fig. 1, the section being taken at the line 2 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a lower portion of the frame of the cabinet, showing the wall, adjacent thereto, in section.
Referring to the particular construction illustrated, the wall of a building is represented at 4, this wall containing at its inner side a vertically extending opening 5 through which the various pipes refer ed to, and represented at 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, extend, the valves 11, 12, 13 and 14 with which these pipes are equipped, being located at the opening 5.
The opening 5 is closed at the inner face of the wall 4 by the cabinet represented generally at 15. The cabinet shown comprises a rectangular frame represented at 16 and which may be of wood which fits within the opening and is located adjacent the face of the wall. The frame also comprises a rectangular frame-section 17 of sheet metal which fits within the frame section 16 and extends at its flanged portions 18 outwardly beyond the frame-section 16 and into a position in which it overlaps the inner fade of the wall 4, as represented, the frame 17 being shouldered, as represented at 19, at its side and top portions to receive, and form a stop for a door 20 shown as hinged at one side to the frame-section 17, as represented at 21. The frame-section 17 is shown as provided at its rear edge with a continuous inwardly extending flange 22, shown as rearwardly ofi'set throughout its length as represented at 23.
The framesections 16 and 17 can be connected together in any desirable way and the assembled structure secured in the opening 5, in the position shown, by any suitable means.
As is customary in wall cabinets, shelves are provided for receiving the articles to be housed therein, the cabinet shown being provided with three shelves 24: one end of the lower one of which is broken away, which extend entirely across the cabinet and are Iemovably supported upon projections 24* provided at the inner surfaces of the vertical side walls of the cabinet frame, and also with two relatively short shelves 25 which are removably supported upon projections 26 located at the inner surface of one of the side walls of the frame and upon projections 27 carried by a plate-like member 28 secured to the movable rear wall-forming member of the cabinet hereinafter described.
The opening provided in the rear wall of the cabinet, as hereinbefore described, this opening being indicated at 29, is provided with a plate-like member 30 of rectangular sha e and of such dimensions that it will fit witliin the continuous recesses 31 afforded by shouldering the frame portion 22 at 23, and assume the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position it is releasably held in place to permit of its removal when desired, by any suitable means, as for example by the turn buttons 32 which are pivoted at 33, to the frame portion 22, and are adapted to be turned into andout of a position in which they overlap the member 30.
The construction as thus provided is not only simple and economical but presents a very neat appearance.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, I do not Wish to be understood as intendlng to limit it thereto as the same may be variously modified and altered Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination, a Wall containing an opening, pipes vithcontrolling means therefor, located in said wall, said controlling means being located at said opening, and a cabinet extending across said opening at its rear side and a plate-like member located at said opening and adapted to be moved into and out of a position in which it extends across sald opening.
GEORGE H. Hess.
