Be it known that JAMES SHAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Butler and State of Chio, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a speciication, referenceV being hadk to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to cert-ain improvements in gates and has relation more particularly to a gate folding or swinging on vertical pivots and it is an object of the invention to provide a gate of this general character having associated therewith novel and improved means whereby the kgate may be moved into open position at a point spaced from the gate and preferably under the influence of the weight of a vehicle.
Another object of the invention is to provide a gate having co-acting therewith s, novel and improved latch for holding the gate in closed position together with means ror releasing said latch to permit the gate to be swung into open position.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved gate whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwlse more convenient and advantageous for use, as willebe hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference tothe accompanying drawings, wherein:

cross member or arm of a gate.A As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, a pair of posts 1 are substantially alined transversely of a roadway and each of saidy posts is provided at its upper end with an inwardly directed arm 2. Disposed transversely of the roadway and in v alinement with the posts 1 Vis apit 3 having its upper face closed by the cover 4, said cover being substantially Hush withk the surface of the roadway. i Y i As herein disclosed, associated with each of the posts 1 is a swinging gate G, said gate being provided adjacent one end portion with a vertically disposed arm 5, the
upper end portion of which being pivotally engaged as at 6 with the outer or free end portion ofthe adjacent arm 2 while the lower end of the arm 5 is continued by the pivot T disposed through the cover 4 and terminating in a crank 8 arranged wit-hin the pit 3.
The cranks 8 are arranged substantially in quarter relation and, when the gates are in closed position, are disposed at oppositesides of the gates as is clearly indicated inFigure 3. The extremities of the cranks 8 are operatively connected by rod 9` whereby the gates G have unitary swinging movement into either open or closed position. The clos-v ing movement of the gates is limited by contact of said gates G with the upstanding stop members 10 carriedrby the cover 4 of the pit 3.
Fixed to one ofthe arms 5 adjacent the lower end thereof is a cross arm or head 11 extending beyond opposite sides of said arm 5. Pivota-lly engaged with each extremity of the cross arm or head 11 is a block 12 which is slidably engaged within a slot 14 produced in an. end portion of an operating rod 15. Arranged at opposite sides of the block 12 Vand interposed between said block and the ends of the slot 14V are the springs 16 which operate to absorb the shocks incident to the operation of the gate.
The rods lextendin opposite directions along the side o-f the roadway and have their outer end portions pivotally connected asv at 16 with the continuing rods 15',- Each of the rods is slidably disposed through a guide member 17 andthe outer or free end portion of each of the rods 15 is provided with a longitudinally disposed slot 18. Disposed along the side of the roadway adjacent the arms 15 and 15 is a pit 19 closed by the cover 20 and the outer ends of each of the pits 19 is transversely enlarged as at 21, each of said enlarged portions 21 being closed by a. cover 22. Depending within each enlarged portion 21 of the pit 19 are the bearings 23 herein disclosed as supported by the cover 22. The bearings have rotatably engaged therewith a rock shaft 24. The extremities of the shaft 24 are continued by the upstanding parallel rock arms 25 and 26, said arms being directed through the slots 27 provided in the cover 22, said slots being of such length to permit the requisite swinging or rocking movement of the arms Vand 26. rfhe upper or outer end portion of the inner arm 25 terminates in a laterally disposed extension 28 which is directed through the slot 18 in the adjacent rod 15. The extension 28 is provided with an enlargement or head 29 whereby the rod 15 is held against displacement with respect to the extension 28.
The upper or outer end of the arm 26 is provided with an inwardly directed elongated extension 30 which is adapted to be engaged by the wheel of a vehicle or otherwise to effect the desired downward nievement of the arm 25 to swing the. gates G into either open or closed position.
The arms 25 and 26 are normally niaintained substantially' vertical by the springs 31, each of said springs encircling the shaft 24 with one end portion secured to said shaft as at 32 and with the opposite end portion in contact, as at 33. with the bearing lVith the gates G in closed position a vehicle traveling toward said gates is caused to pass over an extension 30 with the result thatL the gates G are caused to swing into open position and after the vehicle has passed between said 'gates the vehicle is caused to engage the extension 30 at the opA posite side of the gate whereby the gates G are returned to their closed position. The gates G are held in closed position by a vertically moving latch 34 co-acting with one of the gates G, the upper end ofsaid latch 34 being beveled to permitsaid gate to pass thereover whe-n moving into closed position. The latch 34 is slidably disposed through the cover 4 and is carried by an outer end portion of an elongated flat spring 35, the opposite end portion of which being anchored as at 36 to the under surface of the cover 4. This spring 35 serves to normally maintain the latch 34 projected above the cover 4 and in a position to hold the gates G against opening movement.
Overlapping the free end portion of the spring 35 or that end portion of the spring` provided with the latch 34 is a rock arm 37 carried by a rock shaft 38 rotatably supported within the pit 3 by the cover 4. The shaft 38 is also provided with a depending rock arm 39 with which is operatively engaged an end portion of a rod 40 also operatively engaged with the horizontal swingingcross lever 41 supported by the cover 4. Also operatively engaged with the lever 41 are the oppositely directed rods 42 diagrammatically indicated by dotted lines in Figure Each of these rods 42 is arranged within a pit 19 and is disposed in a general direction toward the shaft 24 and is operatively connected as at 43 with a rock arm 44 carried by the lower end portion of a ver tically disposed rock shaft 45. The upper portion of the shaft 45 is rotatably engaged with an angularly extended portion 46 of a standard 47 carried 'by the cover 22.
Secured to the upper portion of the rock shaft 45 is aplate 48 disposed in a direction toward the adjacent arm 25 and which plate, when the gates G are in open posit-ion and the arm 25 is vertically disposed, eX- tends between the spaced fingers 49 carried by the arm 25. Upon initial swinging movement of the arm 25 in a downward direction under the influence of a vehicle or the like passing over the extension 30 the finger 49 contacts with the plate 48 resulting in a partial rotation of the shaft 45 which, through the instrumentality of the associated rod Y42 results in requisite pull being imposed upon the' rod 40 to swing the rock arm 3T downwardly and flex the spring 35 sufficiently to retract the latch 34 out of holding engagement with the co-acting gate G so that as the arm 45 continues to move downwardly the gates G will be free tofswing into open position. Under normal conditions, that is, with the gates G closed and the arni 25 substantially vertically disposed, the extension 28 of the arm 25 is slightly spaced from the end of the slot 18 in the rod 15 so that the arm 25 will have suflicient movement to effect the release of the latch 34 before the desired endwise movement is imparted to the rod 15 to cause the gates G to swing in open position.
3y the time the finger 49 passes free from the plate 48 the gates G have started tol swing to their open position and when the finger 49 is free of the plate 48 the spring will project the latch 34 upwardly and at the saine time imposes sufiicient tension on the rock arm 37 to cause the plate 48 to re turn to its normal position. After the vehicle or the like has passed over the eX- tension 30 the arms 25 and 2G will return to their normal or substantially vertical position under the influence of the spring 31 and in returning to such position the plate 48 will be caused to extend between the lingers 49 so that the mechanism will be in proper position for another operation. i
When the gates G have been swung into their full open position one of said gates passes over the bill 50 oit a vertically swingingl latch l. This latch 5l is pivotally supported by a bracket 52 secured to and depending from the cover and the pivoted end portion of the latch lever 5l is continucd by an elongated tail extension 53 which overlies an adjacent rod 42. The tail eXtension 53 provides gravity means for normally maintaining the bill of the latch lever 51 upwardly extended to properly engage the gate G after the same passes over the bill 5? to hold the gates in open position.
lVith the gates in open position and as a vehicle passes over thc extension 30 of the arm 26 the initial movement imparted to the associated rod will cause the upstanding cam 54. carried by said rod to pass under the tail extension resulting in sutiicient depression ot the bill 30 to disengage :from the co-acting gate so that upon the continued downward movement ot the arm 25 the gates G will be moved into closed position. After the active finger 49 has passed free of its coacting bill 48 the rod 42 will be returned to its normal position with the cam 53 in requisite position for a second operation.
lr rom the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a gate constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modilication without depart-ing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
l. In combination with a closure mem-ber, a pair oit rock arms positioned one upon each side of the closure member, an operative connection between each of the roclr arms and the closure member for moving said closure member into either open or closed position, a latch for holding the closure member in closed` position7 a vertical disposed rock shaft positioned adjacent each of the rock arms, an
outstanding plate carried by each of said shafts, an outstanding linger carried by each of the rock arms for contact with the plate to rock the shaft upon movement of the arm in one direction and an operative connection between each ofthe rock shafts and the latch for moving the latch out of holding engagement with the closure member upon movement of one of the rock arms in one direction.
