UNITED STATES innate PATENT FFt APPLIANCE FOR CLEANING WINDOWS FROM THE INSIDE.
Application filed April 11, 1922. Serial No. 551,597.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIPPOLYTE M. CHIRON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Appliances for Cleaning Windows from the Inside, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to window cleaners l and the main object is to provide a device which is particularly adaptable for cleaning the exterior surface of a window pane, without endangering the person to injury from falling out.
Another objectis to provide a device as described, designed in such manner as to be readily taken down and folded compactly to be stored in a relatively small space when not in use. Still another object is to-provide a device which is capable of bein moved from place to place in a window with the greatest ease, and effective and speedy.
These and other objects will become W apparent in the description below in which similar characters of reference refer to like-named parts in drawing.
Referring briefly to the drawings, in which, Figure 1 illustrates a window and 30 shows the device thereon in an extended position.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the cleaner brush.
Figure 3 is a front elevational view of 35 the device, in extended position.
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the same.
- Figure 5 is a top plan view thereof.
Describing the drawings in detail, the t0 numeral 1 represents a window frame imbedded in a brick wall 2 and has a pair of sashes 3, and the usual type of windowsill 1. The window cleaning device rests upon the surface of sill 4 and comprises a substantially rectangular platform 5 provided with cutout end portions 6 to receive traction rolls 7, which are rotatably mounted upon pins 8.
A reinforcing member 9 extending longi- 59 tudinally of the platform =5 has a hinge 10 secured centrally thereon, the hinge having a guide beam 11 kept in normal upright position by a wire stanchion 12.
- A lazy tongs 13 is guided in an upward direction adjacent to beam 11 by having its pivot studs 14 engage a T slot 15 formed throughout the length of the beam.
The upper ends of said lazy tongs 13 are hingedly connected by a hollow pin 16 while the lower separated ends 17 are rounded and provided with slots 18. Said ends 17 are capable of a transverse motion in a channel formed by the guide ridges 19.
Crossed levers 20 pivoted at 21 on the platform 5, have reduced ends 22 which are engaged in the slots 18, and grip handles 23, provlded at the opposite ends have a spring 24 which normally urge or pull the outer ends toward each other thereby extending or lengthening said lazy tongs.
The hollow stud at the upper end of the lazy tongs receive one end of a closely wound spring 25 which hangs downwardly, its projecting lower end entering a sleeve lug 26 forming part of a rectangular frame 27. Said frame has a hinged upper member 29 which is normally retained in the position shown in Figure 2, by springs 30 The open edges of both the frame 27 and frame cover 29 are provided with sharp teeth 31 which bite into a pad 28 composed of such material as'felt, rubber or sponge.
The rear end of platform 5 is supported by an additional roller 32 capable of being swivelled and raised or lowered to suit the construction of the window sill.
In using the device the lower window sash 3 is opened a sufiicient distance to allow the platform 5 to be placed on the sill with the beam 11 located on the outside of the device is mounted upon the rotatable members 7 and 32, it; can be easily pulled to any position relative to the width of the sill.
A pad 28 is placed in frame 27 and the lazy tongs 13 are extended and collapsed by manipulation of the crossed levers 20, thus giving .a vertical reciprocal motion to the cleaning pad'28 thereby cleaning the surface of the window pane.
In preparing the device for storing the lazy tongs 13 are removed by sliding upwardly out of the "3 slot 15 and detaching one end of the stanchion 12 from the beam 11 will transversely over said platform, a stanchion to ermit the latter to be rotated about its retaining said beam in upright position, inge and lie flat upon the platform 5. lazy tongs guided in said EV-shaped slot, an I claim elongated frame secured to the upper con- 5 A Window cleaner comprising a rollernested ends of the tongs, a cleaner pad, and.
