To all whom t may concern.'
Be it lrnown that I, Jn'rI-rno O. F ARRAR, a citizen of United States, residing at Elkton, in the county of Rockingham and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Coops; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in a collapsible coop and has for its primary object the provision of a coop which will'be of simple and inexpensive construction and yet may be readily folded in compact form when not in use.
The Ainvention has for another object the provision of a collapsible coop which will be composed of the minimum number of parts,
of simple construction and arrangement and in which the end members may be readily folded into the base member and the side members and cover members folded over the inwardly folded end members and the base of the coop, thereby providing a flat folded structure which will require but the minimum amount of space for storage or shipping purposes.
The invention has for another object the provision of novel means adapted to prevent the several parts of the coop from any accidental relative movement during the handling thereof when in folded condition, whereby to facilitate the handling of the coop when stacking it to the ship or for storage.
The invention has for a further object the provision of a collapsible coop of the char acter set forth in which the end members and side members may be readilyfolded or swung outwardly and locked together to form the body of the coop, while the cover members pivotally connected with the side members may be readily folded upon the latter cr opened over the same and over the end members when the coop is assembled ,for use, novel and simple securing members being provided for the cover sections as well as for the end members and side members of the coop.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists inthe novel construction, combination, and arrangement of cooperating elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawings forming a part of the present application, and in which r- Figure l is a perspective view 0f the coop 1n its set up or assembled condition, ready for use `Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the coop in its set up condition as shown in Figure l;

Referringmore in detail to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, l indicates in general the base of thecoop which as shown consists of ay rectangular upper frame 2, the side and end members 2a and 2b of which have overlapping reduced end portions 3 secured together' by elements et. The base also includes a lower rectangular frame 5, the side and end members 5a and 5b of whichare secured together in a manner similar to that employed in connecting the members 2a and 2b. The solid bottom 6 of the coop is secured to the lower frame 5 in. any suitable manner. This provides a light but strong and durable base structurel for the coop and provides a space in which the end mem-bers 7 of the coop may be folded. The end frame members 7 consist of upper and lower bars 7a and 7b which are connected by vertical posts or slats 8, and these end frame members are secured to the inner upper edges of the base l of the coop by vhinges 9. lt will be seen that the bars Za and 7l extendy beyond the end posts or slats 8 and abut against the corresponding bars of the side sections to be described. The side sections 10 also consist of upper and lower bars l0a and l0b and which bars are connected by vertical posts or slats 11. In this connection it is to be noted that the 'bars 10n and 1()b extend beyond the end of the vertical posts or slats 11 and the object ot this extension will presently be described. The side sections 10 are secured to the inner upper edges of the side of the base section 1 by the hinges 12. This structure will permit the side sections 10 to fold over upon the end sections 7 after the latter has been lowered into the bottom sections 1, as shown in the drawings.
The top ofthe coop is formed of a pair ot cover sections which comprise rectangular frames 13 consisting ot' transverse and longitudinal bars 13a and 13b the longitudinal bars of which are also connectedl by transverse spaced members 147, as clearly shown in the drawings. The cover sections 13 are adapted to fold against the outer t'aces of the sidesections 10 when the coop is in collapsed condition, as will be evident as the description proceeds.
The cover sections 13 are loosely connected at their outer corner portions with the eX- tended endet the upper longitudinal bars 10 of the side sections 10, by the link or slotted plate 15, pivoted to the end portions of the cover sections 13 at the outer edges thereof, as shown at 16. These links or plates are provided with elongated slots 17 through which extend the pins 18 projecting from the ends of the side sections 10 at the extended ends of the upper longitudinal bars 10a. This will provide a loose connection between the cover sections 13 and the side sections 10 so that the cover sections 13 may be readily moved to their folded position against the outer faces of the side sections 10 or to their closed positions over the top ot' the side sections 10 and end sections 7 when the coop is set up for use, with the cover in closed position.
As means for securing the end sections 7 and side sections 10 in upstanding position, the hooks 19 may be carried by the bars 7 il of the end sections 7 as shown and adapted for removable engagement with the eyes 20' carried by the bars 10a of the side sections, thereby securely 'fastening together the corner portion of the body or' the coop. 1n this connection it is to be noted that the ends of the bars 72L and 7 b, of the end sections 7 are` drawn into engagement with the bars 10 and 10b of the side sections 10 whereby the ends tend to brace the side and vice versa A s means :for locking` the cover in closed position,Y the vstaple members 21 `have been provided on the. end sectionsV 7, these staple members extending upwardly from the upper side bars 7 a of the end sections. 7 and adapted to pass through slots 22 provided 'for this purpose in the bars 13a of the cover sections V13,- after which the hooks 21 pivoted on the bars 13n of the cover sections 13 may be passed through the projecting end of the staples 21 thereby securely locking the cover sections 13 in closed position. This may be readily understood by referring to Figures V1 and 2 oi' the drawings.

To again return the parts tothe position shown in Figure l for use of the coop, the operation may simply be reversed so as to bring the movable parts of the coop into their proper places ready to be locked together7 as previously described.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been Shown and described, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is A collapsible coop comprisingl a base hav-' ing a solid bottom located on its underside,
means for bracing the corners of said base, open work end sections hinged to said base and adapted to be folded into the same when the coop is in collapsed condition, open work side sections hinged to the edges of said base and adapted to be folded inwardly upon the end sections when the coop is in collapsed condition, and open work cover sections connected with said side sections by sliding` link connections to permit folding of said cover sections against the outer faces of said side sections when the coop is in collapsed condition.
