UNETE stat" EUNICE SUTTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO SUTWA MFG. (10., INC, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
DISPLAY DEVICE.
Application filed Aprilll, 1922. Serial No. 551,546.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUNIon SUTTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a display device and more particularly to a device for displaying the make, construction and style of certain articles of merchandise such as wearing apparel and the supporting hangers therefor; and has special reference to the provision of a novel means for attractively displaying such articles to portray the make and style thereof and to teach the manner of using the same.
A principal object of my present invention comprehends the provision of a display such as a window display in which wearing apparel is attractively presented to,
the view of the observer in such a manner that the make and styleo-f a garment and the correct manner of supporting orhanging the same when not worn'by the user is pleasingly depicted and presented to'view;
A further principal object of my invention comprehends the provision of a display in which the correct and intended use of a garment hanger applicable to the garment displayed may be clearly exemplified and shown so that not only may the make of the garment hanger or the style of the garment or both be readily disclosed to view, but so that the purchasing public maybe instructed as to the correct way of hanging the garment and using the hanger.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, my invention cons sts 1n the elements and their relation one to the other, as heres', inafter particularly described and soughttov be defined in the claims, reference bein had to the accompanying drawlng which s ows a preferred embodiment of my invention,
and in which i The figure is a perspective view of my display device. 1
Referring in detail to the drawing,- m y display device comprises essentially afigure F simulating the human form and a. garment display G including a garment detached from the figure and supportingly heldby the same,
in such a manner that the style and make of the garment is fully revealed to an observer and the manner of hanging the garment to preserve and hold the shape of the same is instructively disclosed to view.
The figure F, made of suitable plastic or other material, is preferably a complete fig ure simulating the human form, the said figure including, the body portion 10, a head 11 attractively coirfured, the lower limbs 12 and preferably detachable upper limbs 13 and l t, the figure being attached to and supported ona base or other suitable sup port 15. The upper limb or arm 13 when attachedto the body 10 is preferably made to assume the outstretched position clearly shown in the figure, the said armbeing preferably made of a length such that a V garment display when suspended therefrom willbe held in normally.outstretched position. and clear-from the. said figure F, this in simulation of the manner in which a garment is naturallyheld at arms length by the user. for proper and admiring .inspection. -The figure F is; preferably made I in miniature form and comprises a statuette,
although it will be apparent that the said figuremay be made in larger sizes if desired.
The figure is preferably partially or incomparent material such as a reticulated fabric to permitthe shape and contour of the figure to be exposed to view. The lower limbs .or legs .12 maybe suitably ornamented as shown to portray fashionable hosiery and footwear.
The garment display of my invention comprises preferablya armentv hanger 18 detachably' and .supportlngly held by the hand 13- ofthe arm 13 of the figure and a garment 19, carried by the hanger 18, the
- saidggarment .19 being applicable to the figure F and comprising the co-mplemental dress portion Znecessary' for completing the attire; for, the figuiie. vThe garment is thus.
displayed as; aunitE-independent and de- 7 tached from the figure, the garment displayed pleasingly indicating and denoting the ad ditional apparel necessary for completing the attire and toilet for the figure, the ensemble yielding a display highly attractive to the eye. To further attract and direct the observers attention to the garment display, the head 11 of the figure is so ornamented as to have the eyes: of the same suggestively 1 directed towards the garment display, as clearly disclosed in the drawing. I For the purpose of depicting the mak and style of both the garment 19 and the garment hanger 18 and to instructively disclose to the purchasing public the correct and intended way of hanging the garment and of using the garment hanger, my invention includesthe employment of a garment hanger such as 18 which comprises the spaced shoulder and waistmembers 20 and 21, these members being connected together by the preferably integral side portions 22 and 23, the shoulder member 20 being intended for suspendingly supporting the waist portion 24 and the waist member 21 being intended for suspendingly supporting the dress portion 25of the garment 19. The garment 19 in the present exemplification of my invention is shown to comprise or to simulate a dress in the form of a ladys evening gown consisting of I the attached waist and skirt portions 24 and 25. The
shoulder member 20 ofthe. garmen'thanger" 18 supports the waist portion 24 of the dress, the strap or yoke portions 26 usually forming part of thedress being received by the shoulder member 20 of the garment hanger for this purpose' The waist member 21 of'the garment hanger independently supports the attached skirt 25 of the dress and to this end the dress is provided with spaced loops or straps 27 which may be attached to the waist band of the dress,
these loops beingreceived for suspension on made of a light'and delicate fabric, the dress being hung so that the weight of the] skirt is removed from the waist and the waist is permitted to assume its natural condition as worn by the user, the manner of suspending or hanging these dress parts bein such that the strains and stresses whic otherwise subject the waist and the strap-portions of the dress to the distorting influence of the skirt are eliminated, this being an object especially desired in dresses of this type, the waist being hung, moreover, ina manner tov cause it to assume its natural folds and ordinary shape, wrinkling and rumpling of the same being thereby prevented.
For the purpose of showing the construe tion and make up of the garment hanger 18, the waist portion 24: of the dress is preferably made of a transparent material such as a reticulated fabric, this to disclose the waist member 21 and the loops 28 of the garment hanger as well as the straps 27 suspendedly received thereby, the manner v V of hanging the skirton the hanger being thereby made clear to the observer.
By supporting the garment 19' on the garment hanger 18 in this described manner, the garment may be effectively displayed to to an observers view as a complete entity detached from the figure, the said figure being preferably incompletely attired with the garment displayed depicting and the figure suggesting the completion of the attire for the said figure. It will befurther seen that the garment is attractively hung from the garment hanger 18 in such a way that the correct manner of'suspending or as a ladys dress being attractively presented I hanging the parts of the garment is fully the garment hanger and the manner of using the same being further fully disclosed in a highly instructive'and pleasing manner.
