Application filed .Ianuary 5, 1921. Serial No; 435,085. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lfn'own that I, TH'noDonE D. GRILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Means for Raising and Lowering Beater Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
The beater roll of a paper pulping ma chine is very heavy. It is necessary occasionally to elevate it from the knives, hand operated means being now commonly employed for that purpose. Such handworked means has been laborious and difficult to operate. It is an object of the present invention to provide improved means whereby such work may be done by the same power that drives the beater roll, there being provided a suitable clutch lever to apply power either to elevate or lower the roll.
The invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described, the features of novelty being finally claimed.
In the accompanying drawings' Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing a beater equipped with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view of the left hand end of the machine broken out through the middle. Fig. 3 is a top plan view also broken out as shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail on a larger scale of the clutchfmechanism employed.
The general construction of such rolls is.
well understood by those skilled in the art. In the views 5 designates the shaft of the beater roll, said shaft being supported at each of its opposite ends in a lever 6 pivoted at 7 in suitable standards 8. Each of the free ends of the levers has loosely attached to it a screw 9 provided with nut 10 said nut being suitably supported upon the top of the standard 8. Each nut 10 has its rim formed as a worm gear and such member can be appropriately called a worm gear nut. Extending across the end of the machine is a rotatable shaft 11 equipped with worms 12 to engage the worm-gear nuts 10 so that when said shaft is turned thelevers 6 and the beater roll carried thereby may be either. raised or lowered according to the direction;
in which said shaftis turned. The pitch of theworm gear nuts 10 and their operating worms 12 is suchthat'the levers 6 are held inthe positionto whichthey are left when raised or lowered.
The beater roll: shaft hasj an ai'xial stud extension 5 geared'by suitable bevel gears in a .housing 13 to an external solid square I shaft 14. The rotatable shaft 11 has an extension 11 upon which is mounted a housing 15 containing a reversing clutch mechengaged position into operating engagement with either of the. gears 16. or 17 to thereby cause the rotation of the shaft 11.
to raise or lower the beater roll as maybe desired. The telescoping square shafts 14 V and 19 compensate for differences in the distance between the axis of the beater roll shaft and screws 9 when the levers 6 are moved, it being noted-that when theeroll is raised the shaft moves away from the screws 9 on an arc pivots 7.
concentric with lever.
The clutch member 20 is shiftable by I means of a hand lever 21 pivoted at 22 on the exterior of the housing, said lever actuating a sliding rod 23 to which is attached a fork or strap 24 engaging loosely an annular groove in said clutch member 20. The
In practice the beater roll is driven by suitable power as'for example by a beltapplied to the pulley 26 on the shaft of the beater roll. When the roll is driven, as in pulping stock, the bevel gears 16 and 17 of the clutch mechanism are also driven, hence when it is desired to elevate the roll it is only necessary to move {the clutch lever in the proper direction to cause it to engage the gear16 or. 17 and theshaft, 11 to turn.
Whenthe desired elevation of the roll is 0 hand. To lower the roll to-grind'ing posireached the clutch lever is released from the tion the clutch lever ismoved' in the oppo site direction. It will he noted that with this mechanism the same power that is used to drive the roll is also utilized to raise and lower the roll.
The forms of the parts can be changed Without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
The combination With a heater roll and its shaft, a pair of levers supporting said shaft, screws connected with said levers,
ean-see Worm gear nuts on said screws, a Worm shaft having worms engaging said woim-geai' nuts, and a telescopic shaft driven by the beater roll shaft for driving said Worm shaft and nuts, the parts of said telescopic shalt sliding out not rotating With reference to each other when driven by the heater roll shaft, and a reversing clutch mechanism for operably connecting at will'the tele 20 scopio shaft with the Worm shaft.
THEODORE D, GRILEY.
