To'cZZw-wmfzft may concern: n
Be it known that I, ENooH GETHING, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 12 Albion Street, Miles Y Platting, Manchester, in the county ot Lan-- caster, England, have invented new and useful Improvements inan Attachment for Securing the Vork to the Tablesof Planing, Milling, and like Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has reference to an attachment or device by means of which the work to be operated on'can Vbe readily secured'in position on the tables of planing, milling and other like machine tools. Y Y
. VSuch an attachment consists of a l)base plate having a pair of vices adjustable towards and fromfeach other. The jaws of each vice are operated 'by a right and left hand screwed spindle. "The work is clamped in thejaws which can be readily set lin the required position and intermediate support I I y vice slidev form parallel surfaces to support the work@,'indic'ated by dotted lines, placed or'the' workis also provided.
Therinvention is jr'ully'illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings which will now be described in detail. I
Fig. l of the drawings illustrates'a side elevation of the attachment, broken in length for want of space.
Fig. 2 is a plan thereof. Fig. 3 is an end view. Y Y Figs. 4, 5 and 6 illustrate a detail par-t in front, side andV plan view respectively, and, Figs. 7 and 8 show inplan and edge view respectively a sample of a n packing strip which can be used with the appliance. j
F ig. 9 is a perspective view showing 4the y Y lapplication of the packing strips andside brackets to the attachment. y i
The attachment made in accordance with my invention consists of'a base plate a, 'the ends of whichare slotted as at a or, other"- Y wise'prepared to enable itV to be bolted in any desired position Vuponzthe table of the planing or like machine.
stood that'thisbase plate may be made'to any convenient size or in varying sizes.
The base plate @carries a pair ofvices each vice consisting of a plate capable of being slid longitudinally in a prepared way or groove 0 in the base plate, towards or from each other and secured in any'jdesired position on the base plate a by bolts d and*y nuts CZ the heads of the bolts being disposed It wwill be Vunder-V in the lpreparedgroove,y which may beef 'l' or other, shape. Each of such slidable plates carries a pair or' jaws marked A A, B B,
shaped-or likeg'uides formed onthe plate b towards and from each other transversely yontheslidable plateiby means of a right and vlett hand screwedspindlec rotatable by a tov rform a vice, thejaws being slidable on V ,suitabler handle f, and engaging with nuts g i carried by the jaws.
Endwise 'movement of' the screwed spindle is lprevented by the rcollars i, 7" confining the reduced end of the spindle in `the -plain bearings g2. The work placed in the jawsr` otthevices is accurately centred as the jaws f` of the vices when actuated yby the right and lett hand* screwed spindles ymove equally from and towards the longitudinal centre softs'te'el or otherwise as preferred.- The shaped; guides on which the jaws of each in the vices. The base plate a between the vices, is also provided with parallel supporting pillars la, slidable in the T groove 0 of lthe base plate and which can be secured in any desired position to serve as intermediate supports for the. work to resist bending 'strain and give the same stability as if the work were flat on the machineV table.' These parallel supportsare shown in the drawline ot the base plate a, rEhe vices are yproj vided with steel faces g whichmay be of i'ngsj as taking the form of iiat topped nuts 7L carried on screwed bolts 7L', the heads ft2k ot-which are disposed in the T groove of the baseplate a. By slackening such nuts they may be slid into any required position and secured lby tightening them on the bolts. A c
stop is also provided slidablein the slot in Ythe base plate, to act as an adjustable abutment. for one end of the work. This stop is secured in position by a bolt y' the head of which is disposed in the "i"V groovey of the Vraised'in the vices A A, B vB,yby providing a f series of parallel packing plates f2 placed in height and these parallel packing plates could be used in conjunction with the supporting pillars by inserting them between baserplate a, and nut j.. kThe work may be v 10o n the vices beneath the workfone'of which is I shown in plan in'Fig. 7, and in edge view i in Fig. 8, to adjust the work to thef correct the nuts L and the base place. This is illusi trated in Fig. 9, in which, iior the sake of clearness, kone of the jawsk B ol" a vise has been removed.
y to resist side strainsin they direction ofthev i ,across thebase plate, the work beingV Provision may also bey made to resist lateral or cross strains such as when cuttingy rack teeth upon a bar. This could take the form of a bracket orV stop illustrated' in Figs. 4 to `6. rlhe bracket la is provided with slots 7c to enable it to be secured to the base platea and it provides a sideabutment for .the bar m on which the rack teeth are being cut,
arrow. Fig. 9 shows the bracket if; carried by the appliance.
Suchv an. attachment as described greatly facilitates theV setting of work inplaning,
ing of a Vbase plate, two plates slidable in` 1 guides .1n such base platetowards and trom Veach other longitudinally on the base plate, avice carried by each of such slidableplates and consisting of two jaws slidable laterally clamped and centred in such vicesfsubstantlallyas described. l iV Y S2. An attachment for securing work in proper positionV to the tables yof planing, milling andv otherV like machine tools, consisting of a base plate, two plates slidable in guides in such base plate towards and from each other longitudinally on the base plate, a yice carried by each of such slidable plates rand consisting or' twojaws 'slidable laterally across the base plate, yan end stop orabutment 'for the work, the side brackets or abutments, and intermediate supports and packing strips, to enable the work to be supported and adjusted at any required height substantially as described. l j
3. An attachment `for securing work in proper position `to the 'i tables of planing, milling and other like machine tools consisting` of a base plate, means for securing such base rplate to the table of the machine tool,
two plates slidable in guides in the base plate towards and from each other longitudinally on the base plate with means for securing'snch slidable Aplates to the base plate, a vice carried byeach of such slidable plates and consisting of two jaws, means for guiding and slidingsuchjaws towards and Vfrom each other laterally'across the base plateto clamp and centre work placed in thevices. an end stop or abutment for the work,` side brackets and intermediate supports and packingstrips, to enable the work to be supported and adjusted substantially as described,
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to` thisspecification. 1
