Machines for Gluing Moldings; No.147,097. PatentedFeb.'3,1874.
. Mlfldv UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI E,
J. HARPER BROWN, OF BUFFALO, NEV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHI NES FOR GLUING MOLDINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,097, dated February 3, 1874 application filed September 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J HARPER Bnowx, of Bufi'alo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Gluing Tongued and Grooved Molding and Lumber, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to a process for gluing lumber and moldings when in the stick, and having a tongue and groove; and it consists in forcing or spreading a limited amount of glue into the groove by a regulating device,
' and then inserting the end of the tongue into the end of the groove, so that the pieces to be glued shall be at an angle to each other in the direction of their length. The end of the molding thus united is now put between two rollers or other compressing device, and gradually fed through. The gradual forcing of the tongue into the groove at an angle thereto pushes the glue in the groove before it, bringing it into contact with the sides of the groove.
The advantage of this method of gluing tongued and grooved moldings and lumber over the old method is that theycan be glued much faster, and the gradual forcing of the tongue into the groove, as described, carries the glue the groove.
ahead of it, and brings it into contact with the sides of the groove, thus making a better joint, and also one which shall show no waste glue on its exterior. This method afiords amuch. better union of the two parts when they are united.
The accompanying drawing shows a machine which can be used in uniting moldin g or lumber under my process, A A being rollers, which can be set such distances apart as the different thicknesses of molding would require. B is a glue-pot arranged with any suitable pumping device for pumping the glue into C is the molding having the groove on its face, and D the bead having the tongue.
I do not claim ton gucd and grooved molding.
I claim- Gluing tongued and grooved molding by means of the glue-pot B, having a device for pumping the glue into the groove, and the rollers A A, arranged to force the tongue into the groove, in the manner described.
J. HARPER BROXVN.
