Application filed November 25, 1921 To all whom it mayconcem: Be it known that I, EWALD KOERNER, a citizen ofthe Republic of Germany, and resident of Dresden, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements-in Devices for Regulating the Cut of Rod- Forming Cigarette Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is a device for regulating the cut of rod-forming cigarette machines, consisting in the provision of an oscillable ring in which is guided the actuating lever of a two-part displaceable lock coacting with a worm drive, which lever when the ring is swung out of its middle position effects movement of'this lock and effects a tuates the cutting means. I The cut adjustingmechanism for rod cigarette machines are known, wherein by displacement of the carriage actuating means or by turning a wheel fixed on a countershaft, or by the interposition of a planetary gearing the cut may be manually adjusted corresponding to the advance or retardation of'the mouth piece in consequence of the stretching or gliding ofthe cigarette rod. These known devices have the following disadvantages :The displacement of the carriage actuating means provides but a very limited adjustment capability and loads the reciprocating parts, resulting in rapid wear of the driving members. The adjustment capability is also very much limitedrinth'e case where a wheel is'driven on a counter; shaft, whereby inclined claws are advanced to cause the counter-shaft to rotate. The interposition of a planetary drive in which the planetary wheels maybe displaced in a circle unlimited by hand has the disadvan= ta'ge that the motion and power tobe transmitted to thecam shaft is conducted through several wheels whereby loss of power through the interposed wheels results. In this case wear is also large and the free play,
the so-called lost motion, between the drive ing shaft of the machine and the cutting shaft is unnecessarily large even in new ma.-
chines. This lost motion-. causes noise and also affects accuratecuttlng, sotthatfrequently cigarettes uneven inleng th are cut off. By the present invention these disadvantages are obviated.

Revoluble inthe bearing block 1 is the shaft 2-upon which is fixed the cam member 3 for actuating the carriage which supports the cutting'means. Loose on the shaft 2 is the hub 40f a gear wheel 5 which is con.- tinuously driven from thelmaehine shaft 26 by the gear wheel 27. The hub 4 carries a opposite directions. to form two arms 8 and 8 which serve as a bearing for the shaft 6 upon which is fixed a worm 6 and a locking wheel 10. The arm 7 mounted on the hub 4 carries a counterweight '20 to obtain motion without shock. The-worm 6 engages a wormwheel 9 fixed on the shaft 2. Engaging into the teeth of the, locking wheel 10 are oppositely arrangedpawls 11 and 11 under the action of springs 13, which pawls are revoluble about'studs 14. The studs are mounted on a double armed lever 12 which is oseillable on the shaft 6 of the locking wheel 10. In the iriiddle of the double armed lever 12 is an arni15 at the free end of which there is revolub'ly mounted a ball-like roller 16. By this movement of the double lever 12 in the inclined position of the same one or the otherofthe pawls 11 and 11 attached thereto is actuated and locking wheel 10 is advanced by one of the pawls to the right or to the left dependent upon-whether the guide ring wasgoscillated tothe right .or to the left, while the opposite pawl is raised by a nose 18 provided on a fixed bearing arm 8. The resulting rotation of the ratchet wheel 10 is imparted to'the worm 6 fixedto the shaft of such wheel 10, and the rotation of this worm effects rotation of the worm wheel 9 fixed to the shaft 2. Inasmuch as thecam member 3 is fixed to the shaft 2"ro'- tation of such cam member 3 also results'in relation to sleeve 4, in a direction which depends on the direction ofo'scillation-of the ring 17. It is thus possible to impart to the rotary motion of theica'm member 3, which actuates thecarriage ofthe' cutting knives,
an advance motion or a retardation depend ent on whether thesring 17 is swung to'the right or to the left. By virtue of the fact that the inclination of the ring 17 is limited by the stops 26 an excessively: rapid dis placement of the cam-member 3 and'of the cutting means is not'possible, although this is possible with the devicesof the'priorart which leads to the production of defective cigarettes. Upon releasing the-handle 23 of the guide ring 17 the latter snaps under the influence of the pressure springs 24L into'its middle position and the displacement of the cam member 3 ceases. l u I claimi I 4 1;.
